I've hated every Ampeg I've tried but I'd love to try a classic SVT or fliptop. I reckon they'd sound great for a particular sound.
I've hated every Ampeg I've tried except a B-15-like combo my mate's got, which is surprisingly ace-sounding.
You're right... Nobody *NEEDS* a second one. However this is my rig:
Are those 3x10 cabs on the top? I didn't know he did 3x10s. And what power has that Aggie amp got? Well it's an expensive rig if nothing else! Edit: Sorry, didn't mean this post to sound disparaging, I'm sure it sounds the dog's danglies. -
Are you following me? Come on, what's this gate business all about?
A gate just provides silence when there's no level to cross a certain threshold, so combined with a compressor it could make a bass sound pretty well defined. A lot of engineers these days if they're using a digital audio workstation will physically trim noise between notes to make a take sound more perfect. I suppose a gate would be a rough n' ready, less labour-intensive way of doing the same job. Personally I think the 35 metric assloads of compression was what gave Stuart Zender his sound, that and his Warwicks.
I love the basslines in Jamiroquai songs, particularly Too Young to Die and When you Gonna Learn. Problem is I'm only a beginner in terms of technique and alot of them are quite fast/technical. Are there any you would say are slightly easier too learn?
"When You Gonna Learn" was played by Andrew Levy from Brand New Heavies, that's why it's much more laid back than the other early Jamiroquai stuff. Blow Your Mind is pretty easy, if you ignore the fills he slips in. It's a lovely groove too. Traveling Without Moving is pretty easy to play, and the chorus section is really sweet. High times is pretty easy too but it's on a 5-string.
I need a second one!
Funny, I looked at this, thought "Do I need a second one?" and concluded that nobody could possibly need a second one. I suppose I could keep one for home and one for rehearsals, but it's not like they weigh anything or you need a van to fit them in. I put mine in the glove compartment of my girlfriend's Daihatsu once.* * Nearly. -

There's no "It's not crass/obscene enough for me to do on stage" option. -
"too old (34)"... Too OLD (34)... Too 'Chuffin' OLD (34)... I'll give you a slap in a minute 'Young Man'! You could of course view yourself as 'far too young for Jazz' or 'right on the brink' for a fledgling Blues muso.
Well I'm ten years older than anybody else I'm in a band with, so I know my days are numbered! I like to think of myself as a potential young buck of the wedding band circuit. If I could bear to do a wedding band. Which I couldn't.

Things that musicians do that are a waste of time!

I gave up bothering to learn "chops" that I'd never have a use for years ago, but yeah I did do Teen Town and other such guff. Spent a couple of days working out an Andrews Sisters-ey "Mr Sandman" with tapping and harmonics once, sounded ace, didn't really teach me anything. -
Whereabouts are you? I'm in York but might be too old (34).

What pedals (synth and chorus, poss maybe wah too)
thisnameistaken replied to Cornfedapache's topic in Effects
Combine a Fuzz (preferably gated for a synthy sound), an Octaver (the Boss OC-2 is cheap and well favoured for synthy uses) and an envelope filter (DOD FX25/b, well cheap and very good sounding, or perhaps a Q-Tron?), and you can get some really dirty synthy sounds.
Bear in mind that if you feed a fuzz into an envelope filter, the signal's going to have very little envelope left to open the filter with. If you're going that route, get a filter with its own effects loop or trigger in (Q-Tron+, Meatball (or clone), Agent 00Funk, etc.). But it will get expensive. "Synth" in pedal terms can mean pretty much anything, and synth pedals aren't really comparable because they each use a handful of features that the competition doesn't necessarily use. The only common component to all of them is a filter. It would be worth your while to go out and try a few. -
Singing and Playing..Do you find this hard/easy???
I think it's a case of many bass players find singing back-up vocals a necessary evil rather than being something they actively enjoy.
I enjoy the vocals more than bass, I think. Seems like singing jiggles my molecules around somehow, always leaves me smiling. In one of my bands I probably wouldn't still be there if I was just playing bass, I'd be bored stiff. -
DAMN!! Why did I have to be out gigging last night?!!
PM me if you fancy an XO Bass Micro Synth for a few more quid - I'll be shifting it. Will have to figure out a price, no time at the moment, sun's shining and the pub's open. I want an older one because I want to mod it.

There's no rule that says people can only be in one band. If you think they might be interested, ask them. -
It may be worth having a trawl around the stores and a phone around, as the Korean made Fender jazz 24 has now been deleted. You may get a bargain somewhere! The other option is John Shuker. If memory serves, his jazzes start at around £800 & I'm sure he could do one with a 24 fret neck.
Yeah I'd rather avoid going that route if I can, but that might be the only way. I was hoping someone might know of an off-the-shelf bass I could pick up that I hadn't spotted. I'll have to have another look around and see if anything with a Jazz-ish vibe catches my eye.
Haha! Just looked at the discontinued products on the Dawson's Music page... Look at the price http://www.dawsons.co.uk/acatalog/info_00070739.html
Well at least that's VAT inclusive...
