I've been talking to Mr Shuker about his take on one of these basses as the headstock heaviness is a show stopper for me.
Yeah it was for me too. I had one of their earlier models as my main gigging bass for a year or so and it didn't behave well at all on the strap. Sounded beautiful though, plugged or unplugged. Got some great recordings out of it.

Something about graphite necks turns me right off. I've had one before, on a Fender, and it was just a bit too fake-feeling. I've also played a couple of Status-necked basses recently (and tonnes in the early '90s) that didn't do it for me. I always put it down to "worn-in" wooden necks feeling more human, but that's probably b***s.

Tubes! (A 1940's RCA video about making them)

I never knew that so many pretty nails were sacrificed to the progress of science. God bless those dextrous ladies with their pretty nails. -
And where was this? Rampton?
Actually the first time I got called for a solo I was busy sulking in a foul mood because my current squeeze was dancing in a particularly unsavoury way with a guy I knew as a crack dealer, so I refused, but they insisted, and that's how I ended up playing my first bass solo. I expected it to go down pretty badly with the crowd because I was very angry and I basically stepped up with a Jazz fretless and went ballistic fror 16 bars but I got a much bigger round of applause than what had gone before and it lifted my spirits no end. I still skulked back to my stool at the back of the stage and fumed for the rest of the night (whereas usually I'd be gagging for oxygen at the end of a set), but it was a reassuring response. It was in some place in New Brunswick, New Jersey, near the Rutgers campus. I forget exactly where.

Holy Arse, I can afford a DHA pedal?!? OK so it does nothing, but still! If I wasn't waiting for cheques to clear I'd be busy doing the ordering of the thing.

Raising small cabs to ear height
Something very practical, and used by a lot of big touring artists, mainly on guitar combos as they generally use 8x10s for bass which you don't need to stack, is to get a metal flightcase for your cab.
Yeah I thought about that, but that would make the cab a lot less portable and I don't really need a hard case for it. I've got to drag it up and down two flights of stairs at my end and I think cases would make that a lot less fun. This is why I no longer have a 4x10. -

Ampeg? Sounds like an overdriven SVT to me. -
LABELS are they really worth it?

I have tried Shine and Vintage and Stagg basses in the past, just in case they were a bargain and not simply "cheap", but I was disappointed each time. -
I used to be in a band which insisted on everybody taking a solo somewhere in the set, and I'd get called in a different tune every night, and I just didn't know enough to solo "properly". So what I'd do is just try to communicate what I was feeling as much through noise/rhythm as through notes. Just try to get the audience to understand my vibe rather than try to give them anything especially pretty or clever to listen to (our pianist was the solo king and there was no point trying to compete with him!). So I'd avoid gimmicks, avoid slap, avoid "licks", just get a bit animal with the instrument and hope it made sense in their heads. It usually did, and it got me out of having to "show off". I was fortunate in having a drummer who was very talented and who I was very close to. He really made it work, I think.

Raising small cabs to ear height
Uhm, if its a Schroeder cab, put it on its side, and then one of the speakers points up towards you.
Hahaha. I have been putting it on its side, but - like a clown - the other side. So the inside 12" is pointing at the floor... I'll try your way at rehearsal on Sunday! -

A quick Google shows places selling them for about £45. Cheers. -
You could get two wedges, and put one under the cab, and the other facing the other way under the amp, so the amp would still be horizontal.
My next question would have to be "What stops the top wedge from sliding off?".
Alternatively, you could bend some sheet ally into an 'S' or 'Z' shape so that it curled round the lip at the front of your speaker cab, and had a bit sticking up at the other end to stop your amp sliding off the back.
Yeah I suppose that's one solution. Sounds a bit ropey though. -
I'm looking for a way to raise my Schroeder 1212 cab up a bit without stacking it on beer crates, which is a bit iffy. Building something is out of the question because I don't have any tools and if I did I wouldn't have any fingers. I've seen a couple of foldable cab-tilter wedge-type designs which look like a good idea on the face of it but what stops your head from sliding off the top when the cab is tilted back? Any other suggestions for a portable stand would be appreciated.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
Excuse my ignorance, but what's an LPB? Awesome designs anyway!
Clone of the EHX Linear Power Booster? A clean boost. Great board, and great looking pedals. -
An extension cab will also get more watts out of your combo's amp, so it could be worth a go. Another important thing to consider is discussing the band mix with your guitarists, see if you can all agree where the bass is going to fit in the overall mix. A lot of younger guitarists tend to use a full sound that works well in their bedrooms but sounds muddy in a band, sticking to the treble end should help them cut through and make the bass audible too.
Err... isn't the Kubicki Factor American?
That's what I thought. Didn't Fender build them? The Tune bass is a shoe in I think. Haven't seen more than a handful of them (except in the Bass Centre in the early '90s) but yeah they were cool for their time. A bit late though.
Only if the OP likes it.
The Groove came out in the '90s. I do like it but it isn't a classic. I'm not appointing myself as the world's arbiter of cool, but I think there's no harm in excluding whatever boutique hand-made late-model dining table basses might've come along to fill the ever-expanding Bass Anorak market. If you can't understand the difference between "cool musician" and "bass spotter" then that's not my fault.

Advice - achieving synthbass sound on Jamiroquai's Canned Heat
thisnameistaken replied to lawriemacmillan's topic in Effects
Thanks for that. Yeah, the filter I get. How about the synth bass sound on Anastacia's I'm Outta Love while we're at it?
Thanks for making me listen to that... It's a bit tricky because there's a filter sweep used, but it's only triggered occasionally, so if you were using an envelope filter you'd have to be really careful about your playing dynamics and set the filter's sensitivity pretty low. The EHX Bass Micro Synth would be a good solution, it could cop that tone, and do the filter triggering easily too - there's a trigger threshold for its sweep, rather than it being envelope-following, so it's more predictable and controllable and keyboard-sounding. Alternatively you could do it with a Boss OC-2 (or similar fat-sounding analogue octaver), any semi-subtle filter with a sensitivity control, and something to provide a little dirt between the OC-2 and filter to give that bit of colour when the filter starts to open. But you'd have to be quite disciplined with your picking hand. -
It says on the website "Compared to other envelope filters, this may be a one-trick-pony, but it does it's one trick well." what is this one sound???
The 440 circuit is very subtle, it stays deep. Doesn't do extreme funky quacking noises, more of a throb.
