1. Actually this is the fuzz-bass sound that got me into using effects in the first place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOXlJfJ-OgA Mark Brydon never gets recognised as being the innovative bass guitarist that he is. I suppose because he's so good at so many other things.
2. Yeah to me it just sounds like a Jazz bass with both pickups full on, maybe with the pickups set a bit too high.
3. For bass fuzz I just love what Robert Sledge does with it. Actually, rather than link to Ben Folds Five's old stuff, here's two tunes from the reunion album they released last year, which is surprisingly ace throughout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7E_mIgD_6w and for lead stuff (around 2m40): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEyrfFwf3rI And for the record I went and saw them on their last tour and my god Robert Sledge is twice the bassist he used to be. He cracked out the upright and the synths as well as his old trusty fuzz bass guitar, really inspirational stuff.
4. Do let us know how you get on. I'm really tempted by the 1024x and 1025x, they're lovely looking basses.
5. Really cool. Well done. I love the vocalist, very Native Tongues. I felt it got a bit beyond him when it went up-tempo though, it seemed like that was a rather indulgent section for the instrumentalists at the expense of the vocalist, which for me always seems a bit inconsiderate. I can imagine it's difficult when you're collaborating over a network though, and considering that's what you did it's a great result. I'm currently putting together a new band consisting of (so far) drums, bass and turntables, and we're starting out with demoing tracks for voices to contribute to rather than looking for full-time vocalists. It's inspiring to hear other people doing it. Thanks.
6. Could you upload that sound file to Soundcloud or something? I can't tell what the filename extension is supposed to be, I think the forum software has mangled it.
7. Yeah he's got a '74 (IIRC) Jazz, looks all original to me, he still plays it.
8. Why didn't you open it? Curiosity hasn't killed that many cats, dude!
9. About a grand if it's been well maintained, and is a bit special. Otherwise I probably wouldn't buy it.
10. I've always been most comfortable with Jazz necks (out of the 'holy trinity' anyway - the neck on my Thumb is the best neck for me I've ever played) and I think a Jazz wired in series sounds better than any of them, but excluding Jazzes I definitely prefer a P to a Stingray. I've had a couple of Stingrays because I think they're pretty and I'm a hopeless romantic but I've never got on with the neck or the sound.
11. I think judging by how close he keeps his ear to the strings he's quite keen on having good intonation. He's got a lovely warm tone, are they guts? I tried guts on my busking bass but I like to gig that unamplified and they just weren't anywhere near as loud as Inno Silvers. I've got Cordes Lambert on there now and they're not as loud as Silvers either but sound a lot closer to gut. I love seeing guys like him play. Mostly because I think it's really sweet when people dedicate so much of themselves to playing a really specific kind of folk music. Gives me the warm fuzzies.
12. Just stopped in to congratulate you on your solicitation of opinions. Differing opinions aren't often sought around here. Oh and the Yamaha BB1024X must be worth a try.
13. He was very quick to respond to me when I ordered a set last year, he's quite a funny guy too. Like Clarky I'm not a big fan of the feel of the strings but they sound great slapped. I've still got my set on my laminate bass.
14. Somebody left something on my profile after a bad-tempered argument a few years ago. I left it for posterity.
15.
My first thought would be a G&L L2000 or L2500.
I'd agree. The first time I picked up an L2000 I was really impressed at how many different - and useful - sounds it made. I didn't buy it because it looked pretty dull, but it would make a great studio bass.
16. I can't tell if the really awful-sounding bits are him. I think they're probably Wooten because he's got the worst bass sound in history. Still, I didn't dig what he was playing. You could call me narrow-minded or you could forgive me for having some sense of taste. If it sounds good I'll give it a go, but solo bass guitar, certainly in its current form, always sounds f***ing awful.
17. My favourite Jazz config is 500k pots and a .1uF tone cap, and a series/parallel switch. The 500k caps will give you tons of brightness which with the bass switched in series will give you a really bright precision-ish pick sound. The .1uF tone cap gives you loads of treble roll-off so you can do truly deep dub tones without touching the amp. That setup with a good set of flats gives you pretty much all the worthwhile '70s bass sounds. OK so not the slap funk sound but really, when will you use that? Edit: BTW you can wire the series/parallel switch using a push/pull pot on the tone control (look it up) so you don't need a special control plate or anything and it's totally reversible. Well worth having though. If you haven't heard a Jazz wired in series you haven't lived, it is PROPER beefy!
18. I'd really like a Yamaha BB1025x, in white. It's fairly irrational, because I don't need one, but I think they're pretty. I've also been thinking about finding a YOB Jazz, which would be a '74 for me, but I haven't played a decent one yet. Maybe there weren't any good ones built in 1974.
19. Strings probably won't make a difference unless your bass is set up really high. Still it won't benefit your plucking hand. Keep your wrists as straight as possible. Pay particular attention to flexing your wrist perpendicular to the joint (tilting your hand as if wiping something) - that leaves little room for your tendons to operate in your wrist and can cause inflammation. Also if you use a computer mouse at work, think about trying an alternative pointing device like a multi-touch pad. If I were you I would avoid playing until you've seen your GP. And be prepared to take a long time off playing to let your wrists recover.
20. Bass guitars are pretty simple instruments and the cheap ones are actually really good these days. A high price tag is no guarantee of quality, as demonstrated by Alleva Coppolo.
21.
Yay, I knew you'd have to take a personal pop eventually, now that is genuinely funny.
Great trolling effort, well done. I started this thread on the 28th of December and you've been referencing it in other threads since then, apparently desperate to get a response from me. I am glad I was finally able to satisfy your desperate longing.
The thing that genuinely surprises me every time you start one of these threads is that you always say you're so happy with a£200 Korean Squier. If that's so why do you feel the need to keep taking a pop at people who feel like spending more than £200 on an instrument - I just don't get where this animosity & bile comes from.
Actually I paid £100 for that bass. I do have a more valuable bass which I'm very fond of, but I don't feel the need to wave it in everybody's faces all the time.
PS - I don't have any Foderas for sale and the latest line at the shop where I help out (entirely for free)
Oh. Well I don't want to alarm you but Companies House have you listed as a director of Bass Gear. I'd assumed you were aware of this? You should get in touch with them immediately and let them know you merely help out there occasionally.
22.
I guess the only thing that is most obviously funny could be that someone thinks flatwound strings are some kind of magical leveller that make all instruments sound identical. I guess most people would have a quiet chuckle at that
I'm not enormously surprised that you turned up and behaved like I'd just molested your gran because you've always made a great show of how expensive your gear is and you're often plugging your boutique gear retail operation. Even to the point of defending that monstrosity that Jimmy Coppolo managed to sell to some mug for a small fortune. So that's fine, you've got your angle and I'm well aware of it. You've got Foderas to sell after all, and so anyone who challenges the need for a guitar that costs more than most peoples' cars must be opposed. My point was that the sound people are usually going for with flats is a sound that came out of simple tech and the quality of cheap gear these days is good enough to get that sound. You also went on to say that you put flats on one of your basses that cost more than most peoples' cars and it made a sound like angels having an orgy. I'll have to give you the benefit of the doubt because you didn't back it up with a recording. Anyway, thanks for your input.
23.
I'm probably not alone in finding this thread amusing.
You're right, it seems Molan thinks it's hilarious. I sometimes wish I was so easily amused.
24. It's a lot easier finding musicians who want to do a rock band. I wouldn't sack it off until you've found a line-up that works for your 'funk' band.
25. I'm trying to put a band together at the moment, current line up is bass, drums and turntables, can't decide whether to try having one guitarist or not bothering. Would rather have a keyboard player but finding one will be the hard part. :-(
