1. Octabass first, probably. The rest wherever. Your decision whether you prefer your filter before or after dirt, I'm in the "after" camp, personally. Delay and Wah can go anywhere.
2. If you don't like big resonant peaks, maybe try the MXR Bass Auto Q. It still quacks, but very politely. Personally I like filters to misbehave a bit, so I run an LMB-3 at the end of my effect chain to squash any harsh peaks.
3.
Perhaps, Mr Jamerson had grown the nail on his playing finger and that's why it sounds a bit more picky? Mart
Or maybe he had a plaster on. He might've cut his finger making a sandwich or something. Even James Jamerson got hungry.
4.
and a picture of Hilda Ogden out of Corrie.
I still can't believe you got her to pose for those.
5.
It's a very fine line between "genius" and lost the plot.
What a shocking missed opportunity for a Spinal Tap quote. You should be ashamed!
6. Some stuff I don't really dig, some I do. Invitation's probably favourite Jaco recording.
7.
Buy a used fender or squier. Your resale value will be sh*t if you dont buy a name people know.
If you sell it in here, people will know what you're selling and you'll get market value for it. TBH I'd rather buy a budget Yamaha than a cheap Fender/Squier if we're talking sight unseen. At least Yamahas are reasonably consistent, with a Fender god knows what you'll get for your money.
8. I've got a pre-EB Johnny Ball if anybody's interested.
9.
Yes, funnily enough as soon as I heard the album track some months ago I went straight to my Vbass to cop the sound. One preset called GR2000 or something sounded very similar, kind of a saw shaped wave. I played around with it and got just what I wanted, added a bit of sub eq to fill out the bottom and me and my brother jammed the track for hours (he is a drummer!)
Yep the Korg G5 sub-octave sawtooth plain nails it too. As will (I imagine) the Octavius Squeezer's sub-octave sawtooth. I sold one to fund the other so I'll be wanting my G5 back if the Squeezer doesn't hack it.
10.
You could start with a Shuker JJ Burnel P bass http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/jjburnel.htm
I don't think he had one of those in the '70s.
11.
Skill.
My girlfriend still says that.
12. I'll swap it for your Mu-Tron? I do covet that thing...
13. I hope whoever gets the Pulse Synth appreciates it, I loved that kooky little box! I mostly used to blend it 50:50-ish with the octave down from an OC-2, or I'd solo it for "lead" parts. The first time I kicked that combo on in rehearsals (through my Meatwad) our singer turned around and yelled "Play more like that!".
14. Try playing the piano, it's a similar experience. If there are difficult sections where the vocal doesn't fall in the same place as the bass part, just slow it right down and learn it mechanically, it'll feel natural soon enough.
15. If I were you - considering that you don't really know anything about what you want, but you've got a big budget - I'd buy a couple of different used mid-price basses and sell the one you don't like (or both). Keep going until you find one you really like, or until you gather enough knowledge to make an informed decision about what you want from a bass. I would avoid having a custom bass built for you if you don't know what you want.
16.
I had a USA Urge Mk1 and it was an amazing instrument. Any choice of pickup, passive, active or active w/mid boost gave the best of 3 worlds. It now lives with a guitarist who loved the 32" scale.
I had a mate who had one and I couldn't get on with the 32" scale at all, it felt like a toy bass.
17. I take it that's the Micro POG, not the full-on POG?
18. I know what you mean about the aesthetics of the five. A mate of mine's got one, nice bass and all, sounds great, but with the chamfers and the pickguard it looks a bit '80s.
19. Yeah actually I use my Planetwaves tuner for this sometimes, there's a thru output on it, so send the normal out to my amp, the other to my audio interface.
20.
Not a particularly helpful comment in the thread either methinks.
The weight's never put me off mine, it's still my favourite bass, probably ever.
21. Sounds like it's just a bad solder joint, at worst a bad pot. I'm sure the dealer will be happy to sort it out for you.
22.
There you go ... sorted. No need to thank me.
I'm currently wearing a cardigan that orangey-red colour.
23. You could use a Boss LS-2 for that, it's a pretty versatile little box. There's one ending tomorrow on Ebay, currently looking quite cheap.
24. That's lovely. If I had £1500 I'd make an offer in that region.
25. To be honest if I was on a desert island I'd pick nice singalong tunes, but... The Jam - Strange Town Madness - House of Fun The Cure - Jumping Someone Else's Train Fishbone - Another Generation Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television
