They look too '80s so I've never tried one. Even when they started putting headstocks on them they still looked too '80s.

Just get a Fender and hit it with a pick. Or anything with single coils and hit it with a pick. It'll sound the same.

It depends what you call "practice". I don't often (almost never!) sit down with a bass and aim for a particular improvement by the time I put it down. I used to do that when I was younger but not any more. I'm not that competitive now. These days when I pick up a bass it's for the fun of playing with music, or to work on tunes for my band. Both of which are the same thing, really.

Oh, if I ever did try a bass in a shop: I'd plug it through an analogue octaver so I could see how wide and how severe the dead spot was.

I haven't tried a bass in a shop for about 10 years. I haven't been in a shop that had basses I wanted to play.
