How important is theory and reading to you??
thisnameistaken replied to JakeBrownBass's topic in General Discussion
I never need to (or want to) read, don't think I could it any more if the situation arose. As for knowing about harmony, well that's indispensable. I'm not still coming up with songs that were as crap as they were when I was 16, so clearly I've learned and applied some knowledge! It's hard to argue against knowing what you're doing. Often I'll take something along to rehearsals that just doesn't work out, so being able to replace parts on-the-fly quickly, or run through a bunch of candidate ideas based on knowledge rather than guesswork, avoids a lot of sheepish messing about. -

Ah of course. I was trying to think what could go in a rack and be that shallow. -

What's the long blue thing? -
I played one of those in the BC in Wapping, kooky little thing it was. I remember seeing a Tune bass in some mag around the same time that I've never seen in the flesh It was white, fretless, had that curved end to the neck like the one you linked to, and I think it must've only had a piezo pickup because the body had nothing on it but a bridge and one or two knobs. Anybody know what that might've been?

Jaco Pastorius - Modern Electric Bass

Which pedal is causing the problems? TBH I ended up just ditching any pedals that misbehaved and replacing them with something more suitable (in my case, swapping out a USA Big Muff and a Line 6 Echo Park) rather than throwing more gear at it. Like Ped said, the issue with using a gate is that you're still going to hear the hiss every time the gate opens - it'll be part of your sound, and probably drive you nuts. You could maybe try the EHX Hum Debugger but I'm not sure what that actually is(!). Maybe it's just to eliminate ground loop noise I don't know.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but the only reasons I've (possibly) not seen quoted are the ones that afflict me: ... * I'll sound just like (artist) if I buy that new (item here) ...
I sort-of do that with effects. I'll chase sounds from other records sometimes if I think there must be a way to do it, when it would've been cheaper to just buy a synth...
even the most thrifty and sensible among us would be straight on the phone to Fodera or Alembic if we won the lottery.
I think Foderas and Alembics look a bit tacky tbh. Very 'lottery winner' now that you mention it.

Has the sound improved yet? Can't believe I missed JTQ. I always thought their records sucked but as a live band they were excellent.

Just bought a Warwick Corvette FNA Jazzman V
thisnameistaken replied to cockbongo's topic in Bass Guitars
The Corvette models are really good basses. Hope you get on with it. -
ya it just goes straight into the the input on the amp , bass, oc2, amp i will try the eq flat and lowering the pickup
Hopefully that'll do it. Obviously try removing any boost you've got set on the EQ before messing with the pickup itself.

I'm not so bad with basses - I've got two now, bought one in 2001, the other last year but it's a fretless (therefore different enough to warrant having!) and I'm happy with it so it's not going anywhere. Of course I look at some of the basses for sale here and would like to have them, but I don't buy them. For me so long as a bass sounds good and it's comfortable to play I'm happy with it, I'm not chasing "performance" or anything. I do buy and sell a lot of effects, but I use a lot of effects in my band. I'm sort-of settled on sounds now (-ish!) but it took a lot of trial and error to find filters and fuzzes I really liked, and now I'm concentrating on making my board smaller and more usable live (sensible switching solutions, hopefully a programmable analogue filter). I don't buy/sell amplification much, but I did buy a lightweight cab last year. That was a necessity though because I couldn't get my cab in and out of my flat on my own. So I don't think I'm so bad. I'm looking forward to Beedster's response to this thread.

Sounds like your stingray has an especially powerful output and it's overdriving the OC-2, rather than a problem with the pedal. Are the pickups especially high? Tried it with the Stingray's EQ knobs flat? You're running bass -> OC-2 -> amp, right? Not bass->amp (amp fx loop -> OC-2)?

I had my guitarist over here the day after my 1212L turned up and I let him play through it for a bit, he was really impressed with it. Then I took the amp off the top and said "Try to lift it". He was totally flummoxed by how light it was. He put it down a couple of times and lifted it again, just to make sure! Personally I think it's a little bit light on the bottom end, seems to need 4 or 5db boost at the very bottom, but if you've got a powerful enough amp (the cab's rated for 800W) you can just chuck EQ at it and it's problem solved. It'll handle it.

It's taking the whole hero-worship thing a bit too far for my liking. That said, I'm guessing the Marcus Miller bass has stuff on it that normal Jazz basses don't, but I can't really see the point in the Geddy Lee one, and I've never even heard of Bob Glaub???

Whuh? Where were JTQ playing in York?!? Can't believe I missed that. What a big bag of arse.

Who buys these signature guitars anyway? Actually I just remembered the one guy I knew who had a Clapton strat - my friend's dad, who couldn't play to save his life...
It's really tought. I tried singing a slightly syncopated backing vocal line over a differently syncopated bass line - total ball-ache. With a bit of practice, I trained my brain to do it properly.
Bilbo's comparison to playing piano is a good one - it's a lot like learning the syncopation between two hands. Any tricky parts are best learned by slowing them down and going over them repeatedly, starting by just talking the syllables of the vocal. Once you've get the feel of it you'll be able to do it without thinking about it, and if you're playing the song a couple of times a week you won't have an opportunity to forget it. Don't expect to be successfully ad-libbing your vocal while holding the groove down any time soon though. Maybe when you've had a few thousand hours' practice.

Underated - band and bass player?
I don't know about Simply Red, but Moloko's Mark Brydon used to play bass and may have played on their tracks. Fine Geordie lad there - always did like that band.
I think Mark Brydon did play bass on all Moloko's stuff (as well as playing pretty much everything else), he picks up a bass live for them on some tunes. Brilliant musician, producer, songwriter, and a massive influence for me. The Time Is Now is driven by a great acoustic bass line. Fun For Me again is driven by the bass line, somewhat less acoustic. I'm still trying to cop tones like that with pedals... Nobody ever talks about Sublime any more, they had some great bass lines: Doin' Time has a great bass line. Yeah it's ripping off Gershwin completely (and honestly!) but it's a brilliant track. Saw Red - Gwen Stefani pre-fame and a lovely punk/ska bass line. Barrington Levy's hook re-used. Superstar Punani - Great punk/ska tune. Slow Ride - Eric's bass part on this really pushes things along. -
Personally, I post a message and then forget about it - then on to the next thread. I can't control how/when/if someone responds to me. I mean TB has hundreds of posts a day!
Yeah it moves too fast, that's the only frustrating thing about it. Consequently I only really use the Effects subforum, which operates at a much more sedate pace.
