These names can backfire though. My girlfriend was a bit perturbed when she saw me typing "Big John Hairy Balls" into YouTube.

Keeley Compressor, and active bass advice.....
thisnameistaken replied to ___---___'s topic in Effects
I'm looking to get a compressor, and I'm damn sure that I'll go for a Keeley. I use active AND passive basses - would I be right in saying that I should go for the 4-knob version?
If so, there's one going used right now in the for sale forum. -

If the Squeezer's pulse wave doesn't sound as good as that one I'm having it back! -

Kids today.... never had it so good!
thisnameistaken replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
First bass was : 'Satellite' terrible JapCrap plywood Jazz copy From : McGrane's in Leeds, they shut down shortly after Carlsboro Sound opened on York Road. I developed my lust for Warwick Thumbs in Carlsboro Sound. It cost : £50 (used I think) Which today is : £85.50 It was really awful. I remember I broke one of the machineheads on that bass, and it turned out the tuners were molded plastic! Not surprised it snapped so easily. My next bass was a Yamaha RBX-550M which I think I paid £150 for and was a brilliant bass. A year or so later I sold it back to the shop I bought it from for the same money, having set it up better myself than they had. -
I see you use yours with the expression pedal - does it sound as fandabby as I think it would?
The only downside is the Bespeco VM19 volume pedal (recommended for Meatball circuits) which feels a bit crap and weedy but thankfully doesn't have any slop at least, and would be cheap to replace. And often all the "juicy" part of the sweep is concentrated in a small range on the pedal, but that's the same on the Moog I tried too. Still, once you're in the zone it works well. Actually we had a bit of a do with the expression pedal input at first. The range on the sweep wasn't the full range of the filter - set to down sweep it was a low range, up sweep it was a high range, but it never swept the whole range regardless of knob settings. Mario came up with a simple mod to put more voltage through it which worked a treat and it can now go nuts, but I did have to add another switch and solder in two wires to it. He offered to do it for free and pay the shipping and so on, but I figured I'd rather do it myself than ship the pedal back to Nebraska, because it was such an easy mod and I didn't want the Meatwad off my board for a month. I think he was planning to make this mod standard on future Meatwads FTR. -
Maybe it'll have a software FX processor in it.
There's no checks and balances, which leaves it wide open to fraud.
And while everybody's all smiles right now and it's a "fun idea", there are going to be up to 99 grumpy losers after the draw is made, and many of them will be suspicious. It just seems like a bad idea to me.
I'm not sure if you're talking about the OS or the G5?
The OS - the G5 does have an exp. input.

I need to fund new pedal purchases so it's out with the old again: *SOLD* Korg G5 + Exp. pedal + PSU + Manual - £185 shippe *SOLD* One of the holy trinity of synth pedals, tracking is unbelieveably good. 11 different base waveforms, each can be shaped using the on-board low-pass filter, 9 memory settings to store your favourite creations. The octave down waveforms in particular sound huge. This unit is in excellent condition. Included exp. pedal controls filter cut-off. *SOLD* Boss CEB-3 Chorus - £35 shipped *SOLD* No box, no instructions, couple of little chips out of the paint on the top, otherwise v. good nick. *SOLD* DOD 490 'Phasor' - £65 shipped *SOLD* Thickest phaser I've ever heard, works better than most on bass, much thicker than the Small Stone or Phase 90, really gloopy! This is a '70s pedal so it looks a bit battered, but all the knobs, switches and sockets are in perfect working order, there's no scratches, crackles or pop noises when using it. There is currently only one screw (of four) still holding the base plate in place but the other three could be replaced easily enough. *SOLD* EHX Bass Micro Synth + power supply - £115 shipped *SOLD* Older style stainless steel case, not the new aluminium XO model. A few surface scratches (picked up from jack plugs while re-wiring, unavoidable with these types of EHX cases really) but apart from that it's in excellent condition. Never been stomped on - I've always had it in a loop. With box, instruction sheet and power supply. Still my favourite pedal but pedalboard space issues mean I'm trading up to the new, smaller one. *SOLD* Robot Factory Pulse Synth - *SOLD* Analogue synth which tracks your notes and replaces your bass sound with a variable-duty pulse wave, producing a sound somewhere between the G-Funk bass sound and a B-movie laser weapon. Duty cycle can be set using the Pulse and Shift knobs, Speed + Depth set LFO modulation, Sense allows envelope control over LFO speed, 'Fuzz' is a separate Tone control for when the LFO modulation is switched off (the designer calls this setting 'Pulse Fuzz' mode). The left-hand footswitch is a momentary switch to enable/disable the LFO modulation (temporarily switching between "Synth" and "Fuzz" modes - the flicky switch on the left sets whether it's in Synth or Fuzz mode by default). It's a great unit that always turns heads and I'm quite sad to be selling it. To order one new from Robot Factory would cost in the region of £250, and this is the only one I'm aware of in the UK (maybe the only one in the world with the secondary footswitch function - that was a bespoke request), but I have to concede it's a bit of a marmite pedal. As such, I'm open to offers on this one. Requires a 9v power supply (not included), no battery clip.

Ernie Ball do a volume/pan pedal. Or you could try the Barge Concepts VFB-X with whatever expression pedal you have kicking around, or the Morley FX Blender.
-
Try both and see which sounds better (if either). The only real reason for using an input marked "active" is if you're getting distortion when plugged into the "passive" input. The active input will pad the signal a bit to avoid overdriving the preamp, and AFAIK that's the only difference.

I don't usually like odd-shaped pickguards on stuff, but I always liked the BBs and that looks great.
you tried a deep impact??
I don't really like what the Deep Impact does. There are a couple of sounds on there I'd use but not enough to justify the price - much like the G5.
Yeah, you're absolutely right - that's why there's the SDcard slot on it. It just seems to me to have been rushed out, and there's lots of users reporting crashing / hanging and when you're spending $600 you really shouldn't be getting that.
I'm not sure how prevalent the crashing issues are - maybe I should ask on TB, see how many people are affected and whether they've sorted it out with the firmware updates that have already been issued.
Personally, two footswitches and two knobs doesn't seem like the most effective user interface either.
I agree, but there really aren't many options if you want the sort of sounds it does. I looked at the FreqBox but that's too noisy, my Pulse Synth is a bit tricky to tame too (although a bit of attack delay from a BMS helps massively), the G5 is nice but I only use the sawtooth and it's HUGE... The most obvious omissions to me are a program down footswitch and an exp. input. But it still looks like a great box.
you absolutly sure you want one?? the price really puts me off even considering it
It would directly replace a couple of pedals I've already got (Korg G5, Robot Factory Pulse Synth) and maybe some others, so if I can get one for about £400-ish I'd be happy to pay that. I use oscillator tones a lot, and lots of different filter settings, so having a programmable filter in there too makes it almost irresistible. Anyway: Does anybody know if it's feasible to shop for one in the UK, or should I call a friend in Oz?
