watched this video of Peter Gabriel live in 93 which shows Tony Levin using a fretless Stingray with a pick. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aO-TM9GA3Tg&...feature=related
That looks like a fretted Sabre to me (sounds like a fretless though. Maybe it's just got very visible lines). He's Tony Levin, he can play what he likes. It sounds like a Musicman fretless on the record though, could be a Stingray, could be a Sabre, who knows/cares. I've just sat down with my 'ray fretless, an OC-2, my LMB-3 cranked and a pick and got a pretty similar sound anyway, if that's any use to you.

It's an OC-2 on "Sledgehammer".

I once bought a bass on eBay that had "great power of self-assertion". I wasn't really feeling it though, so I sold it on.
I have a 91 NT Thumb and they are truly superb basses. Great neck, no neck dive, growly tone, active & passive, quality construction and beautiful to boot. Not at all expensive for what it is imo.
I've got one too, I'll never sell it. We should compare serials and see how closely related they are. -
You'll probably find a lot of bands on those sites labeling themselves as "classic rock" or "alternative rock" who actually aren't as a dull and white-sounding as you might expect. But like Beedster said you may have to sit through a lot of obviously inappropriate initial rehearsals to find out.

You might get £400-£450 for it, but with it being an unlined fretless it might be more difficult to find a buyer. Warwick values are pretty depressed at the moment. Neck-through Thumbs and Streamers are changing hands for £6-800.

I've never had one but they're hugely popular over on talkbass, maybe ask over there? And yeah they do sound the tits.

What sort of price range are you looking at? I'd agree you might be better off with a good overdrive. I'm sure we've got plenty of tone-heads here who could tell you exactly what you want given a price range and maybe a couple of tunes that feature the type of tone you're trying to cop. Generically-speaking: The Digitech Bad Monkey does a good heavy grind and is very bass-friendly, and they sell new for under £30 on eBay. There's also a mod kit available to further bassify it, but when I had one I didn't think it was needed. It's a top pedal.

Currently two: '91 Warwick Thumb '94 Stingray fretless But I would like two more: A fretless with a neck pup which I'd string with flats (a Ric would be ideal) and a fretted 5, ideally another '91 Thumb. And a P bass would be nice too, for those "let's thrash through some old post-punk numbers" moments.

I actually like the sound of his slap playing. It sounds funky, instead of f***ing awful, like everybody else's slap playing.

If you're having wiring issues on your board - major spaghetti problems or clumps of jack plugs interfering with eachother (the Boss LS-2 is a swine for this) then go with George L's because they are a real boon for that sort of thing. If you don't have any such problems then stick with your cheapo cables and make "he's mental" signs at anybody who says they're harming your precious "tone".
yeah but surely thats the nature of the envelop of the octave, do you run dry signal through your octave pedal or is it purely oct-1 or oct-2?
One tune I used to play in a former band the bass part was purely oct-1 on an OC-2, and I had to play a fade at the end, so playing softer definitely does work. I didn't have any tracking issues because I played the part up around the 12th fret (it was the tone rather than the low notes I was using the OC-2 for) but it definitely does get softer if you play softer. I'm tempted to re-wire my board now to stick my OC-2 infront of a filter just to see how it behaves. It's in the loop of my Meatwad these days so I haven't done it for a while... OK I stuck a BYOC 440 after it, and the envelope sounds the same through the OC-2 as it does bypassing the OC-2. You are right that the tone of the note doesn't change as you play softer or harder, but the dynamics seem to be preserved very well.
It was Flea that made me realise that you didn't need a Mark King type height for slapping.
It was Norwood for me. Personally I wear my bass just above the bulge in my trousers. Mostly to show off the bulge in my trousers. Although I strap my fretless a little bit higher because left-hand technique needs to be tidier.
I prefer a new set for gigs
I always found Rotos a bit too bright to gig straight away. Sometimes I'd drop lucky and have a set that were "just right" on one my basses, so I started trying to rotate basses for gigs and always have ideal strings on one of them, but it never really worked out and it got really expensive when we were playing 5 nights a week. In the end I switched to Lo-Riders which weren't quite so snappy-sounding when fresh and seemed to stay fresh a bit longer than the Rotos. But they always felt a bit weird, like a fatter gauge string.
That's just plain fugly... Far better off going back to your Status. I'll take it off your hands to save you having to look at it any more.
Er... Remember that conversation we had a couple of months back where I was saying I'd never seen an older "racing stripe" Streamer that had the newer two-piece bridge, but I'd been looking for ages? If he sells this it's MINE! MINE I SAID!
I remember seeing Cass Lewis with Terence trent Darby on video years ago and he had a PINK thumb bass i think it was . Looked the dogs danglies!!!
Yeah I often wondered whether that bass would make me look as cool as Cass Lewis.
-
I played Rotos for years, and I usually swapped them out when the note started sounding too thick/muddy to tune reliably by ear. Sometimes that would take a couple of months, or a week, or even just a couple of nights, depending on how and where I played them, how well I cleaned them, etc. My fingers sweat more than most though, I think.
Put the money towards buying a new bass with black hardware.
+1 Modifying a guitar is only really worth doing if you're not planning to re-sell it. The modifications you make will only be worth their cost to you, any future owner is unlikely to care about them as much as you do.
the MicroPOG isnt dynamic to your playing (although no octavers are)
I can't remember what the MicroPOG behaves like, but certainly my OC-2 can and does track my dynamics well enough. I pump it into an envelope-following filter regularly and get very predictable performance from the filter.
