1. I started on bass back in... 1989 I think. I also play trombone and I'm a competent drummer, but I've only rarely picked up a guitar and I actually can't play guitar very well at all! Actually I'm thinking about switching to drums in my current band because we can't find a drummer anywhere.
 2.
I ended up buying a CS-3 but with a Monte Allum mod - works very well as a compressor (before you ask, I'm sorry but don't know how you would mod yours, I got it ready-made from another BCer)
You can purchase a kit here. Looks cheap, but probably a bit intimidating if you're not handy with a soldering iron.
 3. Just get something that looks good when you wear it, that's the only important criterion. It doesn't matter if it doesn't play well because you're a bass player, you're not going to need to play anything difficult, and it doesn't matter what it sounds like because the sound guy's going to turn your sound into a woolly shapeless rumble anyway.
 4. I had one of these until recently. It's ideal as a bass-friendly Muff-a-like, works well with active basses too. I think £100 is a sensible price used.
 5. I've got a 3-band fretless and I never touch the mid knob.
 6. I've still got the "Young Person" rail ticket I bought on my 30th birthday. I even scanned it.
 7.
http://www.jazz-nights.com/SaraMitraGallery3.htm PS Have I got the smallest stack in the world?
Dunno but I hope you got a couple of quid off that strap, they usually come about twice as long as that.
 8. The tracking is remarkably good. It sounds a bit weedy and tinny though.
 9.
Or you might want to get the cash back and buy a secondhand item that's been played in and is known to have no issues.
That's the only way I'd buy a Fender tbh. Had a new Jazz go bad in the past.
 10.
Im looking for the same as Jake £900
i belive this is the original FS thread! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=28039&hl=lej

Bloody hell, this thing's appreciating in value at a rate of about £50 a month.
 11. I've never played a bad budget Yamaha.
 12.
id say we forgive jake. he should pay back the fund and then it should be done.
From what I can gather he hasn't made any mention of paying to ship the bass, now or in the future. If he does, I'll let the forum decide which one of my hats I should eat.
 13.
Buy a warwick thumb
IMHO as a bassist very much still in love with the sound of his old Warwick Thumb, the sound it makes is more of a purr. I know that the Thumb and the word "growl" became inextricably linked at some hazy point in bass history but they actually purr. I swear.
 14.
THE SHIPPING FUND. Donate as much as you like, Shipping is likely to cost over 100 quid.
Er. Did I miss something? Why isn't Jake paying for the shipping? If I sell someone a bass can I have a whip-round for whatever associated costs I don't feel like paying?
 15. My current guitarist is actually a good bass player (better than I am a guitarist!) so no, we don't have those sorts of arguments. People have told me that bass is easier than guitar in the past. I just agree with them. I think it's the lazy person inside me. Anyway, while you're all arguing about who is the most talented you're not going to be making very nice music. Maybe you should point that out.
 16. Is that an LED mounted just above the bridge there? What is that?
 17. Didn't this sell on here only a couple of months back? If I had the money I'd take it off you, I wanted it last time because that yellow is righteous. Not too fond of the "relic" job on it but the colour would still swing me. Hopefully someone else will sell this again in the new year when I can actually buy it.
 18.
I dont think a kid at 21, fresh out of Uni can leave and be a pure player, unless they either cruiseship it,do the corporate when/wherever,and do it purely by playing alone...except in a hit band or in the Cities Ive cited (inc M25)
It's difficult to make a living playing original music over here, but honestly if your band is any good it's a doddle in the states. That's what I did when I was 20 - jumped on a plane, went to gig 5 nights a week with a band out there, did it for three years until I got homesick. I was living very comfortably too. Music was never about making money for me particularly, I just wanted to play what I wanted to play, and I turned down a couple of offers from major labels when I was younger just because they seemed like unpleasant people to have to work with.
 19. Have you tried the new Bass Big Muff? It's apparently based on the green Muffs but with bass-friendlier tone and an available wet/dry blend.
 20. I could use this much power but with christmas around the corner I can't really do it. Honestly I think you'd be better off shelving this until the new year when everybody's obligations are out of the way.
 21.
p.s. I remember the drummer looked a little frail with little or no hair and a basebal cap - cancer/chemotherapy/recreational chemistry? Excellent drummer though.
Not that I'm aware of (if it was Keith LeBlanc). He was another Sugarhill cat. I'd still like to hear the story of how all the top brass from Sugarhill Records ended up crossing the pond to come and work with Adrian Sherwood, if anybody knows. I never really understood how he pulled that off!
 22.
hmm... too true perhaps?
I admire your persistence, BenWhiteUK. You are like Lestrade of the Yard, but less rubbish. Currently the bass I couldn't sell is my '91 Thumb, but I'm willing to compare it to a '91 (or earlier) Thumb 5.
 23. The only way to see the video for Love Your Money on YouTube at the moment is to hit the 1:46 mark on this one. But it's worth it, really gnarly tune! Ooh, and after that you get Sugarcubes - Hit! Old-school Bjork and the worst rapping probably ever.
 24.
Daisy chainsaw were brilliant i fancied the pants off katy jane the singer.
I saw her first! Yeah I remember when that EP came out every boy in every sixth form across the land had to launder his trousers. She was ace. Not wanting to lower the tone (too much... hehehe) but, bloody hell...
 25.
That Ben Folds one is quite interesting... thats kind of the sound im looking at, a driven fuzz sound but not so OTT that it rules the whole song. Their sound guy was on the money for that one.
Not OTT? That's a green russian Muff completely cranked! But yeah, he's a tasteful player. It suits the song in a way that you wouldn't expect.
My question again isnt really where it "should be"... some times I can "feel" where it would suit but then the other little voice in my head says "noooo... the band wouldnt like it". Or is that just me?
I loved this earlier advice so much that I didn't want to contradict it: "Don't plan it, just have it ready on your pedal board, make sure to give it a good volume boost or you'll just drop out of the mix, you'll know when the moment is right." I'm sure he typed it with his tongue firmly in his cheek but it's top quality. Fuzzing up the bass is something you can only do with the co-operation of the rest of the band. If the guitars are fuzzed it probably won't work. It works best on tunes where the bass drives the thing along, where you can be at the front of the mix. Or it works well to add sustain to long notes (as in that Ben Folds Five tune), or it's handy for adding colour to other effects, or to give a filter something more interesting to chew up (when I crank the resonance on my Meatwad and put heavy fuzz through it, you can hear each individual harmonic get popped off the top of the sound as the filter sweeps down). Basically, fuzz is a versatile effect, but everybody has to be on-message for it to work. If you're scared of upsetting your band mates by switching it on, you'll never switch it on.
