See if you can find Daisy Chainsaw's one hit "Love Your Money" - lovely grindy noisy bass sound on that. And of course there's the Ben Folds Five back catalogue for Muffed-up goodness, although Robert Sledge didn't have a guitarist in the way. His Muff pretty much makes this performance of Fair.
looking for a more mellow kind of sound (think "Your Song" by Groove Armada) that I could then liven up with a fuzz.
Have you tried the Boss OC-2? If you solo the -1 Oct it does that warm hummy bass synth noise very well.
I have tried several pedals on and off but, to date, I have never found one that makes the bass sound better than a bass straight through an amp. Different, yes, but not better.
"Different" is what we're going for, not better.

Let's not forget that he was the bassist in the Sugarhill Records house band...

Do they do red ones? I always fancied a blue 'ray with a white pickguard and red pickup.
I don't recall describing it as either vintage or collectable, simply as rare, which it undoubtedly is, and as a great player, also true Thanks to the rest of you for your slightly more constructive comments
I wasn't trying to be constructive or otherwise. Someone rhetorically asked why it was still here and that's the thing that primarily put me off it, so that's what I said. It still looks like a nice bass, I just prefer old basses to look like old basses.

Tremelo pedals - can any work for bass, or are some more suited?

That Cusack box looks pretty neat. Never even heard of it before. -

Anyone know of any tap-tempo tremolos besides the Diamond, Ultrem and the Seymour Duncan one? -
these guys know what theyre doing. theyre all professional musicians,
By definition, anyone who makes money from an activity is a professional. When preceding the word "musician" that includes homeless people with penny whistles and middle-aged men at wedding receptions playing Mustang Sally. It's the amateur musicians you should trust.

SOLD: Ashdown MAG 410T cab

This cab is now sold. 4x10 plus tweeter, 4ohm, 450W, full specs can be found here. Mine is the older style cab with the silver steel grille, carpeted, no tears or stains or anything, it's in very good nick. I've had it about a year but never gigged it because I can't get it in and out of my first-floor flat on my own. Consequently it's never been driven above household volume. I just bagged Geester's far more flat-friendly Schroeder cab so this can go now. Asking £100! but it will have to be collection only from central York, or I could potentially deliver it within a reasonable distance if my missus ever gets home from work with the car in a reasonable time (which she rarely does).

An old Hondo or Encore precision copy. I'm going to need a fire.

I think we've had a thread on him before. He's a busker in Barcelona, I saw him last year and bunged him a bunch of money, he's a really great player.
People who slag off bands like these should try and play them as well.
But there are lots of bands with talented musicians that sound bad. Equally - thankfully - there are lots of bands made up of mediocre musicians with terrible voices who sound awesome. And he's got a pretty stonking bass sound too.
'Mustang Sally' has become a parody if itself, as have 'Midnight Hour', 'Dock Of The Bay' and 'Superstition'. Pointing the slow unmoving finger of scorn at Jazz doesn't alter that in any way.
I don't know about you, but when I was a kid first learning to play bass my dream was to play at weddings each weekend, performing songs like Mustang Sally in the club singer style, maybe wearing a suit, and always maintaining an air of discreet professionalism. That's showbiz.

String suggestions please
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Accessories and Misc
Yeah I used to get free DR strings when I played in a band in the USA, they're great. I never see them over here though and never think of ordering them in. I put slinkys (100-45) on my Thumb yesterday and they sound pretty good so far. Nice and fat, chunky sound and they feel a little smoother than the Rotos too. Have to see how they cope after a couple of weekends of abuse though. -
