1.
Get the remastered version straight from Dick Lucas via the Citizen Fish/Subhumans website, you know it makes sense ;-)
Presumably I will pay no more than £2.50? I will definitely do that, thanks for letting me know.
2. Ah I used to love Subhumans when I was a nipper. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY-Eckb4CBA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMT-19HDt6I That's reminded me I don't have any of their stuff any more. I'll get Day The Country Died on mp3 off Amazon when I'm at work tomorrow, I used to bloody love that album, should make the day chug by quite quickly. Lots of good players already mentioned. Klaus Flouride was great, overshadowed somewhat by the ridiculously cool surf/punk guitar sound of East Bay Ray though.
3. I've never liked P necks so I haven't played them much, but I do like the sound. I prefer the sound of a Jazz with the pickups wired in series though. I'm not a fan of the nasal burp you get from the bridge pickup soloed, especially when players pick near the bridge, it gets annoying to listen to.
4.
The double bass is far too noble an instrument in my opinion to not want to celebrate it whenever it's needed.
Well said.
No one's asked me to do a hip hop gig yet... and I love hip hop...
Yeah I'm still waiting for the Cypress Hill tribute band to start up.
5. Filling that out made me realise just how many effects I want that nobody makes.
6. I've only ever shipped one bass - to Spain. I packed it in a hard case with the back of the neck supported and the bass bubblewrapped, then closed the case and bubblewrapped the crap out of the case too! I also took lots of photos during the packing process and sent them to the buyer so he could see how I'd packed it and if there was any issue with damage to the bass he'd be able to tell if the courier or customs had opened the package. It was a pretty expensive and time-consuming way to ship something but I would rather do that and not have any problems with it than try to save a few quid on packing materials and ship something that arrives covered in dings (as I've had happen to me...). I don't think I'd ship another guitar to be honest.
7.
f***ing incredible. How can you criticize this???
I really (really) don't like this Wooten-like approach at all, and I don't like this tune either, but yeah, the performance is very impressive and despite it being technically difficult he hasn't gone all-out to sound like he's performing a superhuman feat of bass playing - which is what I usually find so un-musical about Wooten. So he gets an unlikely thumbs up from me. And no I couldn't do it even if I wanted to.
8. Oh yeah I see that now, whoops! I replied to BetaFunk and went to give the dog his breakfast so I never saw the other replies. I blame the dog for everything these days. He does all my farts for me too. :-)
9.
Does anyone know what airport is nearest to the Fender factory and how much the flight will cost taking in to consideration that i will require two seats so that the bass does not get damaged on the journey. I presume that every guitar and bass manufacturer does this otherwise how on earth do they arrive in the U.K. undamaged?
I imagine Fender replace product that is damaged in transit otherwise they would have no dealers. A store buying half a dozen guitars is a different scenario to a private individual buying a single guitar from another private individual. If you think these two scenarios are equivalent, well, good luck in the used market.
10. I would look for a decent century-old DB, but I appreciate that some people really like those 'super jazz' basses that are all the same.
11. I don't buy basses that I can't go and collect in person. I've gone to Newcastle, Liverpool, Goole and Nottingham so far. I've received less valuable items that were packed really badly so I wouldn't risk it with a bass.
12. For a couple of years I had a Stingray fretless and a Thumb bass, so ner.
13.
Names plastered all over the pickup covers looks tacky though.
The pearloid pickguard did that job before anyone got close enough to see the pickup covers.
14. I quite like Jazz Basses, so maybe I'd get one of those.
... The Ritter Royal Flora Aurum, was built by Jens Ritter, a luthier, or stringed instrument maker, from Germany. This luxurious bass has a body carved from a rare, solid piece of maple...
OK so maybe I wasn't ambitious enough. I never thought of having a bass made of maple, that is pretty outrageous. f*** it, I'll have a Jazz made from tits.
15.
You don't realise how much he's playing until you analyse it. Listen to some of the old Paul Young records, the bass was often extremely high in the mix, but it never got in the way of the vocals.
This is why I don't buy the standard bass-playing advice of 'lock in with the drummer'. I leave the drummer to lock in with me, and I concentrate on making the vocal sound good. It's not about how busy you are, it's about not stepping on the vocal. Either play around it or harmonise with it, follow it where it's interesting, lead off into something interesting where the vocal repeats, etc. Don't worry too much about what the drummer's doing, if he's any good he'll be doing the same thing as you - making the song work. If he isn't any good then you can tell him what works and what doesn't. If all you're doing is listening to the drummer then you won't know whether you're making the song sound better or not.
16. I tried one of these last year, I really liked the sound but the neck joint looked like it was going and the guy wanted 900 for it. This looks a much better prospect. :-)
17. Yeah they work fine with a mic. I think they're a better sounding pizz string than a slap string.
18. Yeah don't expect to get pickup and string choices right first time, as such try to buy used wherever you can so that you won't lose too much money when you inevitably decide to chop and change.
19. I'm surprised this is still here. I was honestly ready to give up doing amplified gigs until I got my Ehrlund EAP, now I actually look forward to them.
20.
I want something that can provide a range of sounds, but isn't too complex or expensive
Good luck. You should really try a few. The main thing that makes up a player's opinion of an envelope filter is the envelope follower itself. Some are very quacky (Mu-Tron style), some are snappy (DOD style), some are very smooth (Lovetone Meatball style), and it really depends which suits your playing. My favourite is the Meatball, but that's a very complex pedal. The 3Leaf Groove Regulator is the most simplified Meatball clone on the market, but again I would go out and try a few different designs yourself - you might not like the envelope follower on a Meatball.
21. Flamed tops are pretty bling to begin with but putting a translucent colour over them makes for a hideous looking bass.
22. I saw Ben Folds Five a few months back, there's only three of them, how did they manage to make the bass sound so bad? The mix was all cymbals and vocals and the bass was mostly an indistinct rumbly sound. I did think 'At least it doesn't only happen to me'.
23. Just put a good set of flats on any passive bass, and plug it into a valve preamp. It's not a sophisticated sound, you don't need specific gear at all, you can do it with a standard Squier (and I do).
24. Julian Cope, Mark Brydon (Moloko), Jah Wobble, Lloyd Brevett.
25. This forum isn't exactly fast-growing though is it? If we had two they would be very slow.
