What's the keytar guy doing? What a muppet.

Did you have any speakers close to your bass, or pointing at it? Ideally you want everybody's backline as far away from you as possible.

Ehrlund EAP - where to buy?
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thought I'd bump this thread to say I had an amplified gig last night with a little trio and got a bunch of people coming up to me afterwards to say how good the bass sounded. Given that it was an amplified gig the Ehrlund pickup/pre has to take a massive amount of credit for that. And it managed it without me having to do anything, really. I think the Ehrlund might be the best bit of bass gear I've ever bought. It works brilliantly. -
Good on you. The great thing about practising jazz stuff is it really improves your knowledge of the fingerboard and your understanding of how chords and intervals relate to each other, which makes you better at everything. My only worthwhile tip: When you practise walking bass, deliberately go out of your comfort zone as often as possible. Sometimes it will sound bad but the rest of the time you'll learn something from it. I suppose you'll even learn something when it sounds bad, but learning something that sounds good is better.

Yeah I don't do that much either. I prefer the old '70s sound to the bin-full-of-cutlery stuff that came later.

It'll be really slow progress but on the positive side it's excellent practise and your playing will improve no end.

I'm glad Guns Of Brixton made it onto the list anyway. :-) -
Thinking of having a total bass cull!

I'm sure the Laklands are nice basses but they don't look very inspiring. I would agree it looks like the stingray classic 5 is perhaps the ideal bass for you, but my god how much are they ripping people off with those things. I would work hard to find something else just to avoid giving EB any money. -
I've got a '91 Thumb, I would like an '89/'90 Streamer - one of the ones with broad wenge laminates rather than maple, and a two-piece bridge. There aren't that many of them but they are my favourite-looking Warwicks.

Most of that is very funny, but Trent Reznor claiming that Marilyn Manson will 'cross any line of decency' must've forgotten that he was famous for the line 'I want to #### you like an animal'. -

Are you sure it's not just the 34" scale causing problems? There are lots of good 32" designs that would be worth trying. -
string height.....again....sorry
My adjusters go quite low, so I've experimented with height a bit. For me there's an optimum height which works out at about 6.5-9mm from G to E (with Spiro Mittels). Any lower and the notes lose their body, much higher and I can't get the growl that I like. It's surprising how much difference a small change will make.
It depends on the strings and how you use them, before you start considering the way your fingerboard is profiled. I've got two basses set up pretty much totally differently. There is no direct or deliberate relation between the heights of the strings, they are set up 'appropriately'. They are completely different sets of strings. New players: Don't strive for any particular string height. This isn't like bass guitar where you can EQ out all the awful fret noise and try to play faster than everybody else by setting up lower. Not that that ever worked out on bass guitar anyway... -

They normally go for around £700 on eBay. My mate got his for £680. They are good functional studio basses but they look way too '80s for gigging.

'Weapon'? -
I don't have one. I've got two bass guitars but one is strung with rounds and one with flats, so they can't really back eachother up. One would be a couple of grand if you bought it new, the other under £200 (what's the point in having an expensive bass if you're going to put flats on it?). I've also got two double basses but again they serve different roles. One sounds nice and I use it for amplified gigs and recording. The other sounds OK and I've strung it with slap strings and I use it for unamplified gigs and busking because it is mega-loud.

He's dead good isn't he but he doesn't need chorus on his guitar and he doesn't need to do all that fusion toss either.

string height.....again....sorry
thisnameistaken replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in EUB and Double Bass
IMO 7mm to 10mm is pretty low, regardless of the strings you've got on there. I'd side with the 'harden the **** up' crowd I'm afraid. For what it's worth when I first started it was on a bass with very similar string heights and 'medium' orchestral hybrid strings. They felt anything like 'medium', and I could only manage ten minutes at a time before my left hand got tired out. So I did ten minute stints and they built up to 15 minutes and further and after practising every day for a couple of months I could have probably managed a gig if I'd trusted myself to gig the thing. I also started doing weight resistance training for my shoulders and back because I noticed I was getting weird twinges in my back and very early fatigue in my left shoulder, and I'm still doing those. Anyway yeah: In the end it's all about building up the stamina to do it properly, and IMO there's no point in trying to make life easier for yourself because your sound will suffer. Although I did swap out the high-tension Evah Pirazzis for spiro weichs in the end and I was glad I did. I would say though, if you haven't already, it's worth being diligent about working on best-practise techniques for both hands. You can make life really difficult for yourself if you just treat it like a big bass guitar, but if you take it seriously and you're disciplined about your practise you'll find it's a lot less tiring to play and your intonation will be a lot easier to get right too. If possible get a teacher, if that's not possible scour the crap out of the internet I suppose. -
I had a look at the MS schematic - the square wave and octave circuitry 'savings' would only be a handful of components as these outputs are kind of 'side effects' from the processing the rest of the pedal does.
Well that's disappointing. I've opened up a few to do mods and there's two massive boards in there, one on top of the other, so there's no practical way to rehouse it in anything significantly smaller if most of that circuitry is necessary for the filter and envelope trigger.
