1. I'll give a good word for Shane Haigh (String Surgeon) in Horbury. He's been doing guitar repairs for over 20 years and taught for a while on the instrument building course at Leeds that people like Jim Fleeting graduated from.
2. They told me mine was built in the Czech Republic but the fingerboard and bridge fitted and setup done in Germany, although mine is one of their mid range models.
3.
I'm still trying to figure out whether this would fit into my small hatchback. Am assuming not :-(
A 3/4 bass will go in almost anything. When I got my first bass it was delivered by a guy driving a Pug 306, and he had another 3/4 bass in there too!
4. I bought a second bass for that reason. I wanted something I could string with steels that would sound fairly modern for recording and pop stuff, and another bass I could string with gut-a-likes for busking and trad stuff. It's worked out pretty well so far. The only down side is I've now got two basses I'm always thinking about upgrading instead of just one...
5. There are plenty of good bass lines in Daft Punk, Justice and Basement Jaxx tunes.
6. He's got a great feel hasn't he, really nice playing.
7.
A Thumb Bolt on has a really unique vibe to it, I actually prefer the bolt on to the NT, more snap in the high notes.
I prefer the neck-through. More high notes - you get two extra.
8. I got a Gedo bass just over a year ago. It's still playing well and I still haven't had it set up since it arrived - haven't felt the need - so clearly they did a good job of that at Gedo. Since it's been here over a year and through all the seasons (including a straight 6 months of winter :/) I guess it's a well constructed bass. I've never bought a bass from Thomann but I've heard lots of good noises from people who have. I think whichever you decide to go with you should get a good product at a good price.
9.
...and my experience to date is you might as well try and get your hands on unicorn gut strings as Cordes Lamberts these days. I've certainly had no joy. Let me know if you do!
Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket. I emailed Ivan last night to ask if I could go on their waiting list and he emailed back just now to say he could have a set ready to ship on Wednesday, so I've gone ahead and ordered the full set (wound E, wound A, plain A, plain D and three gauges of plain G). So hopefully I should have them on my bass by next weekend.
10.
If you've got a good Precision and a good Jazz Bass there isn't much you can't cover in terms of styles and genres of music . All I really need .
11. Does anyone know how available the Cordes Lambert Gut Twin sets are these days? The vegan came over for a jam tonight and as much as I'd like to try guts it seems like a bit of a dickheadish thing to do to him. So if I can get a set of those I'll try them.
12. Currently I'm doing an original thing on bass guitar with a drummer and two vocalists, another original thing on upright with a singer/songwriter/guitarist, and two sets of mostly covers (one rocksteady/ska, one pop stuff) on upright with different singer/guitarists. But they're not all full time. If I was doing one 'serious' band that I was fully involved with, I would maybe only do one other side thing.
13.
Anything with showoff woodgrain. Yuck.
Yeah I really like natural finishes with understated woods. A nice lump of Ash is really nice. My Warwick's got Wenge and that's not got any brash-looking grain to it, but yeah 'blingy' maple tops, whether it's quilted or flamed or 'spalted' (yuck) it just looks like a lottery winner's furniture. Nouveau riche.
Gretsch Committee
Having said all that, there's nothing quite like bad design to make you realise you don't mind blingy wood quite so much. The Ric 4001/3 shape is pretty terrible too. When it's got all the hardware and the pickguard on they look nice, but when you see one that doesn't have all that you realise what a badly shaped lump of wood it is.
14. Nice! I bloody love trombone. I've got two but I don't practise enough so I'm terrible. I actually think I first bought a fretless because I liked trombone so much, and I find my phrasing on double bass is very trombone-y. I suppose it's from growing up with my mum's music (Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller) and my brother's music (Rico with The Specials) and then when I started playing bass I heard a lot of Fred Wesley with the various funk outfits he played with. It's one of my favourite sounds and if I'd had any sort of natural ability with brass instruments (I've discovered I don't) I would probably be playing that instead of bass.
15. It could well be that. I had a rotator cuff problem last September took a good three months of physio to sort out, the shoulder itself felt OK but I got a lot of pain on my upper arm, right around where the front deltoid and bicep overlap, especially when my arm was extended for long periods. I didn't think it was a shoulder injury but the physio was proved right in the end. Either way if you're getting pain you should go see your GP in the first instance, but he/she will probably tell you to self refer to physiotherapy. While your crocked shoulder might always be a problem you might find with some extra development of the right muscles you can overcome it enough to stop the pain.
16. I haven't tried them no. I always thought the Slaps were a little too low tension for me and thought the Super Silvers would be a good fit tension-wise but expected them to sound just like the Slaps. My thinking is that if I'm after a gut sound I should probably try gut. Although I jam a lot with a vegan singer/guitarist which is why I've resisted guts for so long!
17. I've got Silver Slaps on my laminate bass at the moment and while I've been generally impressed with them I find the sound a little bit twangy at times and so I'm considering trying guts instead. Can anyone recommend a good and not-so-expensive brand, and a retailer that sells them?
18.
If you are being asked for a price on something that is not for sale....click the "delete email" button.............sorted !!
Or, even easier - avoid getting the emails in the first place by not having a long signature listing all your gear.
19. Could be referred pain from a rotator cuff problem - shoulder impingement. Do you do any weight training?
20. Meh. Loads. Including pop players like Jimi Jazz. Actually MCA (RIP) played some nice upright parts on older Beasties tunes. Alright Hear This is a nice one. http://vimeo.com/37998548
21.
Unless your drummer's crap or you don't know the songs very well, this should be simple.
But you're only going to get a good recording if your bass part relates only to the drum part. I can't record without a vocal. Even if I could remember the structure of the tune and count the bars it wouldn't be a good performance.
22.
So I've done what we've all done - we join basschat and within a year we're buying and selling more basses than the average music shop....
I've bought two basses on here, I've still got one of them, the other I decided I didn't need a fretless. I've still got the bass I had when I first registered here.
23. Galliano - Blood Lines I think it's an EUB on the record but it sounds very nice on DB and the first big position change is a challenge at first.
24. I don't like a lot of Prince's tunes, or him, but he's one of the best rock guitarists I've ever heard.
25.
This forum has about 90% less agro than any other I post on. Debate causes argument.
Good point. There really isn't any debate around here.
