I thought about buying a 4/4 for busking thinking it would be louder but I'm glad I didn't, I would be smacking the pegbox on every doorway rather than every other doorway with my 3/4s.

If anyone's after a Takamine B10 acoustic/upright bass ...

That looks like a really interesting gig you've got now Clarky. The last one looked interesting too, you're getting some nice gigs. -
I am increasingly beginning to hate my sound when slapping!
It's called 'evolution'

All the cool kids are getting reverse singlecuts now. I heard some geezer who can pick with all six toes of his right foot has got one or is getting one.

Ah cheers, that makes sense. I nearly bought a '60s Hofner hollowbody last year that was 30" scale, lovely looking and sounding thing it was, in the end I thought the neck wasn't quite straight enough to justify the asking price...
-
Whenever I see a semi-hollow bass I just think it's going to neck dive like crazy. I've never put one on a strap though. Am I wrong?

I had a '62 Precision but thought the headstock looked naff so I sawed the curvy bits off and stuck a Charvel logo on it. Looks awesome now.

What is the worst thing about music?
these tossers are like a bunch of young conservatives dressed up as a folk band. Really, really tedious crap.
I want to see that quote on the posters for their next tour. -
Are you going to let us know who it was? Would be nice to hear a recommendation for someone within driving distance.
I don't care!!! I want presets!!! I want I want I want!!!
One thing I thought of doing was snapping the sliders off so I could stack BMSs on top of eachother. Then all you need is a loop selector.

If I ever get another gig on bass guitar I'm buying a 1025x in white. They are lush.

Usually it's the impedance from a piezo pickup that causes problems at the inputs of bass guitar amps (which are designed for the much lower impedance of magnetic pickups). The idea is to use something to bump the impedance down from the piezo to make it more acceptable for a bass guitar amp - hence the Boss EQ pedal suggestion. If you're getting a good sound straight into the amp then you can assume the amp is designed to take very high impedance signals. You're lucky - most aren't! Shame about the GK combos, that would've been my advice. Can't comment on the Markbass stuff. Personally I use a GB Shuttle head and a lightweight 2x12 cab rather than a combo.

That might never happen. Look at mobile data coverage now and how slowly it's improving - there's no incentive for the networks to provide good coverage in low population density areas.

Yeah the old 24v box is one of the best sounding bass effects ever. Foolishly I sold mine for an XO model, quickly re-sold the XO and bought another 24v one but it had two iffy sliders. :/ So now I don't have a BMS at all. I do look at them on eBay sometimes though. *sniff*

line selecting/mixing channel looping on a budget.

Well your wireless receiver will no doubt output a low impedance signal so - assuming that is transparent - it should be a good enough buffer. -
Really nice looking bass. I'd love something like that.
That sort of makes sense to me but aren't there loats of variables with pups and electronics anyway? Would an active bass really mess up the sounds from the dist pedal to an annoying or negative degree?
Well with pickups you're typically looking at a high impedance signal from passive electronics and a low impedance signal from actives, and yeah it can make a big difference. With some circuits actives just make them sound bad - nasal and unpleasant and weak. With others you don't get the same level of control over the gain as you do with a passive signal. I guess this is why active electronics are less popular among guitarists than they are among bass players. Actually I don't think I know any guitarists who use actives. -
I won't use cloud based stuff as data plans are far too restrictive/costly. It's fine if you have free, fast, wi-fi where ever you go. If you don't it's pointless. I'll stick to carrying around a couple of iPods and swapping stuff around from time to time.
That's why I haven't subscribed to Spotify. I buy most of my music in mp3 from Amazon now and it ends up on my home network drive, my phone, and various USB sticks for the car.

I've done baggy/indie, punk (Americanish - Husker Du / Fugazi), acid jazz, funk, punk/reggae, hip hop, rockabilly, rocksteady, gypsy jazz, klezmer/folk, quite a variety I suppose. Never done a rock band though. Or a cover band.
A Jazz is not what I'd ever consider a mountain-leveller but have you consider fitting a pre-amp to your Jazz? Never mind mountains, an East J-Retro 01 can level a continent. Easy to fit and change battery with no mods to your bass, they have a bypass to passive which keeps your original tone and still works with a dead battery,
If he's using distortion then a passive bass is probably the way to go. A lot of dirt pedals are designed to work with the impedance of a passive pickup at their input, and don't sound so good with actives. OP: If you're using a Muff on bass with two distorted guitars you're going to struggle to hear yourself. There's no real solution to this - you're all using distortion so you're all treading on eachothers' toes, your sound is swallowed up in the sound of the guitars and the person who can hear themselves is the person who is loudest. To get more grunt out of your 'clean' sound you could try wiring your pickups in series (ideally fitting a series/parallel switch so you can swap between the two), this will give you a beefier, louder sound and it's an easy modification to make. As for your distorted sound, a Muff might never work very well with distorted guitars, you may be better off looking at an overdrive pedal instead. Any Tubescreamer clone would probably be suitable so maybe get a cheap one first (Digitech Bad Monkey is a good candidate) and see how that works out for you. -
Am trying to save people's money and wasted time on products I've used and not got on with...
Fair enough.
His bass has lots of dings and etc well before that. It was just a well worn and well gigged bass. Have a look at any Jaco period Weather Report video to see the condition of it in the 70s.
Totally. Look at Billy Sheehan's old P bass, it had just been played a lot. Not necessarily abused. He played some of most technically challenging stuff on that - why didn't he do it on an Alembic instead? Draw your own conclusion.
Well yeah, but I remember hearing a similar question about classical music composers and electronics and synthesisers. Would Brahms or Beethoven have used a synthesiser or drum machine if one was available, I think absolutely they would have. If you are pushing musical boundaries why not.
You're talking about composers, of course if new instruments are invented they will consider writing for them. That's different to an instrumentalist trying a hundred different instruments when they've already found one that plays well and sounds good.
