1. Price compares to a set of spiros or evah pirazzis. I don't think it will be a big problem for them.
2. He's not playing on a commercial recording, he's doing a Youtube video. He can play what he likes, it won't matter. I think some of his improvisation is ropey, and his bass sounds terrible, but it's not like someone's paid him for a session and got this self-indulgent mess back, it's just a guy in his back bedroom entertaining himself. This is why I don't get why anybody ever uploads videos to Youtube of themselves playing along to records. It always sounds like this to me, if not worse.
3. Could do with colours for the guitars but will keep an eye out around here.
4.
Honestly, I think there are quite a few soundmen who panic when they have to deal with anything that isn't a standard 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum set config.
Oh definitely. I've even seen sound men throw a fit because the drummer needs a vocal mic. To add a positive note: The last gig I did on DB the sound guy came to the stage when he saw me arrive with the double bass, asked 'What do you want to do with that?', I said I had two pickups and preamps so if he could give me two DIs and my own wedge he was welcome to choose whatever mix of the two pickups he wanted out front. He said 'Brilliant', dragged over another DI box and went back to his desk happy. A sound man who didn't know everything - made the whole gig more tolerable.
5. I think the people who get angry at what they call 'low-ball' offers are the people who've over-valued their items and as such have received more than one such 'low-ball' offer. If someone offers me a price too low I'll just politely refuse. It's part of the game and I've got enough stress in my life without getting offended at the slightest provocation.
6. Hi man. Where are you based? Also could you add more photos with better light? I know it's hard at this time of year.
7. There are tons of them out there, so of course with over-supply they are going to sell relatively cheaply.
8.
Ooooooooh how did I miss this one? I was taught how to play slap bass by Ian Dench of EMF fame. Unbelievable but true.
They had some boss tunes given that they were just kids. Lots of talent in that band. I still love the fact that they got that 'What the **** was that?' sample broadcast on Radio 1 every day for f***ing ages! Kudos.
9.
Again, simplicity is what we need initially. Things like this sound easy but are actually very difficult (and expensive) to maintain and code. Nice idea though
The main problem with adding features to support good ideas like this is that unless your platform was designed to cope with extension in this way, you can quickly end up with an unmaintainable system that consists more of exceptions than rules. And doing it 'the right way' isn't cheap.
10. I like the proposals for improving the forum. Maybe some more ideas about how to fund it would be good though - some people are always selling in there and others only sell rarely so it seems like £20 a year to advertise items would be a bit of an unbalanced way to pay for it. I do support the idea of BC receiving money in return for use of those forums though. I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.
11. When I had silver slaps on my bass the G sounded terrible when bowed. Especially up in higher positions it sounded like some roadkill mammal slowly giving up the ghost. I don't think they're really intended for arco playing.
12. I've got a set of Honeys currently on my ply bass that I use for busking, and a set of Silver Slaps that I'm always thinking about putting back on but they were a little too low-tension for me. I think I will get a set of Super Silvers eventually and give those a try. I've been very pleased with the two Innovation sets I've got, especially given how inexpensive they are. My 'main' bass is strung with spiros though, they just seem to suit it well.
13. If it sounds good do it, don't worry about where you got the idea from.
14. I've got a list of the tunes for the gypsy stuff, but not the other one. I don't know if I'll get a full list of tunes for that one, which is why I'm worrying! And I just know they're going to have some funny ideas about what keys they want to play in, just to confuse me even further...
15. I seem to have agreed to do two 'jazz' gigs this month. Well, sort of. One's a short set of gypsy jazz stuff, the other will be about 3 hours of slow standards on boxing day for some function attended by old people. I've not played any jazz before. Well not live anyway. I'm pretty happy that I can do the gypsy stuff since it's mostly blues and popular tunes but the with the standards there'll be a lot more busking required. It's a very low-pressure gig though and they'll all be slow tunes so I suppose it's a good way to dip my toe into reading charts which I haven't done for 15 years or so, but it's a quartet so there's the bonus fear of being required to chip in with a few solos. Bit nervous. Any advice?
16.
me on bass the nice lady who drums with the Bangels the little lady who played guitar with said Bangles and Ms Pink on vocals type of music...who cares..
I would've gone with the drummer from Fuzzbox tbh.
17.
Move south where its warmer and less damp , sorted. Alternatively , eat more garlic , wear a copper bracelet or take cod liver oil , better still do it all.
Beware the moon, and stick to the road.
18.
What will make the most difference? Lessons. You can buy and swap gear all day,but actually spending time studying and playing will make a much bigger difference.
When you've got decent gear that's true. I've never been one for buying extra bass guitars because I think they're pretty or chasing 'the one', but I often see a piece of kit that is either going to improve my sound (recently this has been double bass gear, before that it was bass effects) or is lighter/more portable and will thus make rehearsing and gigging a more pleasant experience, there's always those reasons for buying gear. But yeah if you've got an instrument you're really happy with and your amplified sound isn't giving you nightmares then stick with what you've got and spend the disposable money on lessons.
19. The filters are pretty useless because there's no sensitivity adjustment and/or many of them (the decent-for-bass ones) have a big level boost and no output volume control. They are just totally impractical to use live, IMO. I use my M9 for stuff like pitch shifting, modulation (there's at least one good-souding type of each modulation effect), delays and reverbs, the tube comp sounds pretty good too and the octave works well although it sounds a bit anonymous, the attack synth patch also gets a lot of use. But as a do-it-all unit it falls down hardest on the crappy implementation of the filters.
20. Vocals: Lowkey, Deeder Zaman, Josh Waters-Rudge Keys: Herbie Hancock Drums: ?uestlove Bass: Bill Laswell I think that'll do. Let them work out it.
21. Usually it's a long time after I've recorded something and the super-critical phase has passed I find I do actually like the sounds I'm making, but during the process I'm never happy.
22. Anyone else seen them? Went to the Leeds gig on Saturday, the band sounded great, Robert Sledge has really raised his game too he was playing upright (pizz and arco) and synth bass as well as singing harmony and doing 'guitar solos' of course, the guy is just awesome. The album is up and down but the high points are really nice, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7E_mIgD_6w
23.
Octave before and envelope after for fat analogue synth sounds!
And a sample rate reducer for that broken robot vibe. And a 2-octave pitch shift so you can bust out the Top Gun theme in the middle of your band's crappy 'ballad'.
24. Great ad, but if you want a terrible bass player you'd be better off advertising on a guitarist forum.
25. I had that problem with the E string saddle on a USA Jazz. I just replaced the bridge (since I was replacing almost everything else anyway due to it being a garbage bass). The action doesn't ever really need doing on my Warwick, and my current Jazz is set up pretty high so it doesn't really matter if it moves a little.
