Can anyone help me ID this Warwick Bass guitar
thisnameistaken replied to sheldon's topic in Bass Guitars
I can imagine it's still a very nice bass so you could be in a worse position, but did you not see any photos of it prior to buying it? The Thumb looks very different. -
I played 6 strings for a while and yeah whenever I picked up a 4 it felt a lot more comfortable, it was just more fun to play. I've been thinking about getting a 5 for a couple of years but it's my experience with sixes that has put me off so far.

Is this quite a new feature?! (Sandberg Configurator)
thisnameistaken replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Looks like VM 5s are popular here. Probably my favourite looking Sandberg too. -
I only bought a bass last week and now GAS has set in

I had one of these mid-'90s 22-fret Jazzes back in the day and it was the worst bass I've ever owned. Just saying. -
Recommendations for funky bass albums?
thisnameistaken replied to Angel's topic in General Discussion
For some more modern funky stuff check out some Me'Shell NdegeOcello(especially her first 2 albums), Raphael Saadiq (Tony,Toni,Toni) and Pino's playing with D'angelo ('Voodoo').
These are good suggestions if you like that bare bones nu-soul sound. It's pretty interesting from a bassist's perspective actually, you have to do a lot with very little. -

Recommendations for funky bass albums?
thisnameistaken replied to Angel's topic in General Discussion
I think Incognito are a bit too clean-cut personally. Parliament are like funky brainwashing they are amazing. Actually Bootsy's last album (Funk Capital Of The World) is very good too, some great stuff on there. -
I am happy to take your existing bass and tie it to my towbar for a couple of weeks for only a modest fee.
I have found, through experience, that you are only as good as your drummer.
I've been saying to everybody, forever, that a band is only as good as its drummer. They never take any notice. I've found a good one now, only problem being he's epileptic so he can't drive, but given how hard it is to find a good one he's still a very busy boy. And no, strobe lights don't give him seizures, or he'd really be stuffed.

Shall I sweep the floor with my a*se whilst I play bass?
thisnameistaken replied to tonyclaret's topic in General Discussion
TBH I would rather not gig than do that gig, but that's just me, I wouldn't enjoy doing the cliche party band cover repertoire. Also I played with a group of 10 for three years so 8 would be a bit of a step down anyway. -
I wouldn't have done it for that money and I don't particularly think I would have wanted to do 4 rehearsals either, but that is something I could have bartered with them in a message, I wouldn't have felt the need to leave a sneery post on their blog, or start a thread about it on here, but that's me.
I didn't realise anybody had posted rude stuff on their blog, that's a bit unnecessary. But bringing it up as a topic for discussion here seems like a reasonably thing to do, and others expressing their opinions is what happens on a forum. -
New technologies and the evolution of bass
thisnameistaken replied to BassPimp66's topic in General Discussion
IMO a bass guitar is what it is. And so is a bass guitarist. I suppose it's quite noble to try to improve the bass guitar or to push bass performance in different directions, but I think the reason most people don't care for it is because they don't see it as being bass guitar any more. -
I enjoyed that but the Liberty City arrangement sounds the same to me (can't comment on Domingo because I don't know it so well). Is it supposed to be the same? I guess I can see Bilbo's point. The Wal sounds great though. Reminds me why I wanted a Wal fretless so badly when I was a kid.

Shall I sweep the floor with my a*se whilst I play bass?
thisnameistaken replied to tonyclaret's topic in General Discussion
Tbh when I was a teenager I was routinely called to dep for originals bands and I got into a routine of asking them for a tape of their set, which I would learn at home, do one rehearsal to make sure I had it all right, then do the gig. I did this with about a dozen different bands having been playing bass for just a couple of years. Why would you not be able to do this with a set full of top 40 material? -
there are plenty of vids on the show us you playing thread which wouldnt come up to this band's standard but many people offer polite criticism and advice and encouragement why slag off bands like this?
Because this band call themselves professionals. -
I'd say a dep would need to be desperate to take up this offer, but then,as we found out in other threads, there are so many of us who would happily play for free that £50 would be like winning the Lottery.
There's a difference between playing music you love for free and playing bad versions of songs like 'Valerie' for £50. -
Wow - flame brigade! I'm surprised by the negativity on here - I wonder how many BC members would appreciate being told they're s**t when they post their little you tube vids.
It is sort-of relevant to the topic though. If they were a better band they wouldn't have this requirement and the dep slot would look a lot more attractive. -
can't do Level 42 with flats.
Yeah flats are great aren't they. More seriously I don't think I could string my only bass with flats, which is why I have two basses. And the best thing is the sound of flatwound strings is so basic you can use a really cheap bass and it makes very little difference. Get yourself a cheap little Squier and have that sound available whenever you want it.
PM'ed. You'll find I'm at least as flaky and unreliable as him. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow, october 11! best, bert
Top stuff.

What he said. Also they aren't very good. At all. -
they are having fun not taking a f***ing exam, it sounds like fun, two guys having a laugh on stage for entertainment's sake... and in that case I think it's fine.
So they were deliberately playing the cheesiest-sounding faux-funk licks they could, as a kind of ironic humour?
-
I liked it. I was a bit bored during the intro but when the three of them were playing it was good. I had a keyboard player who played like that earlier this year but the guy smoked way too much weed and was the flakiest, least-reliable guy I've ever tried to make music with. I am still trying to find someone to replace him. :/
-
Like Bilbo I can usually trust my ear and check against an open string now and then. The first bass I bought the sound was so thick and boomy it was really hard to hear my intonation, but with the new bass I bought this year it's much easier to stay in tune.
:0 Do you have a recording of this?! I'd love to hear it!
Sorry no we only played it live once I think. It was something that sprung up in a rehearsal one day and bizarrely it got a round of applause from some other bands in the rehearsal studios when we finished, so we snuck it in live later that week when our guitarist was tuning up. It did sound immense though.
