Online reviewers who slap! Pet hate!
thisnameistaken replied to lefrash's topic in General Discussion
There was a guy on Talkbass who did a review of the Roland V-Bass system, let me see if I can find it, it's unbelievably ridiculous... Here we go. The video description says it's a 'very very basic and simple' demo. He starts playing around the 2:20 mark. Each time he starts demoing a new patch it gets worse. Has anyone got Roland hand sonic.?

That came out more drunken-text-message than I intended! Message was sincere though. :-) -
Has anyone got Roland hand sonic.?
thisnameistaken replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Other Instruments
A drummer friend of mine had got I've and he makes awesome noises with it but he has also had Tabla instruction. Basically if you are a hand percussionist you can probably make excellent sounds with a Handsonic. -
I never knew this had happened or I would've endeavoured to enter something. I will listen tomorrow wren I am sober and do voting.

Muse have gone all out for a stadium rock sound and it's made them a ton of money so they obviously achieved their goal. PIL were art rockers and did what they did for the jollies, so you'd expect them to appeal more to musicians, and apparently they do. I don't really like Muse's music, but they've got talent and a sense of humour and they seem to put on a good show so good on them.

First winter with a carved bass... Advice?

She works for Valve too. What a babe. -
That's not a Fender neck, so no, it isn't.

I've never been a fan of Metallica but when Cliff played for them they certainly weren't the collection of fat clueless greedy douches that they are now.

First winter with a carved bass... Advice?
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Cheers for all the advice. The bass is in my dining room which is at the back of the house away from the draughty windows and doors, conveniently it's probably the most stable room in the house in terms of temps but I've never measured humidity. I'll have to get one of those indicator strips and see how it goes. -
I've heard horror stories of basses cracking when the humidity drops in winter, so now that I've got a carved bass I'm a bit apprehensive about the long nights drawing in. Am I right to be concerned or is winter not normally a big problem for basses? My flat is pretty difficult to keep warm due to its heritage-listed windows letting the winds blow in. Should I come up with plans to stop my bass getting damaged?

Ehrlund EAP - where to buy?
thisnameistaken replied to thisnameistaken's topic in EUB and Double Bass
That's a shame Clarky although I guess not a big problem if you're happy with the sound of the FC. For me I'd had enough of piezos so I am very relieved that the Ehrlund works well on my bass! I'm keeping the Realist on it just to be belt & braces about it, but the Ehrlund sounds a million times better. -
For the relatively unitiated what does this set up do that isn't possible with a midi pickup on a regular bass then routed through whatever midi devices one wanted or could afford?
It would be hard to do what he's doing without that touchpad. Just consider how you'd do that with a combination of a regular bass and foot pedals. That feel would be difficult to achieve.

With the bass at 'normal' height (with the nut about level with my eyebrows) I don't have any issues with keeping my wrist straight in the lowest positions. Doesn't that work for you?
-
And I am starting the responses by people who don't understand what you want them to do.

If it was me I'd be looking at Warwick (Thumb probably or Streamer Stage 1), Sandberg, Yamaha, Status maybe if I could find a nice plain one with a headstock, maybe even a Fender Jazz V.

The Other Notes....? Moving away from Root and 5th
thisnameistaken replied to WillEdwards's topic in General Discussion
My main use for them is that in addition to the major and minor scales you will ofter use a major scale with a dominant 7th or a minor scale with a natural 6th rather than a minor 6th.........
OK. So would you do that to support a particular type of chord? Or to create a particular mood? I mean, is there anything that these modes are typically used for, or are they as generic as the two that everybody knows? Also, when does anyone ever have the audacity to use a whole-tone scale? I think I've heard Stevie Wonder do it once, but is that how useful it is - you can use it once if you're lucky and mega talented? -
IF you are having shoulder issue, please look into Alexander Technique for the correct posture and remember to practice relaxation!
Oh no it's not the bass causing the problem, it's a combination of working at a computer all day and driving a sh*t car with no power steering, and only really having any muscles on the front of my body and not the back, meaning my shoulders are pulled forwards and tendons are getting knackered. I'm a few weeks into physio to sort it out and it's going OK I think. Still not fixed but improving, and the bass is definitely not contributing to the problem.
If you know a major and a minor scale then surely modes are not such a great leap? They are just scales made up of the same notes but starting on a different note from the original scale……
Yeah I know what they are (although I can never remember their names) but I don't know why they exist or where to use them or why that one repeating sequence of intervals can be messed with like that and still work. So I guess I know how to use two of them, that much is true. -
Biggest problem I have with the bow is that I haven't yet found a good compromise bass height for pizz and arco. I like the bass low for the sake of my left wrist, but that means I have to bend too much to bow, and the left wrist angle changes and screws up my intonation. I can work with that now, but when i first started it would have caused me demoralising problems.
I am now worried for your left wrist. Your wrist angle shouldn't have to change if the bass is high up - you simply raise your elbow to keep your wrist straight. Please do this, I don't want to have to worry about your wrists when I've currently got my own shoulder injury to worry about.

DB or EUB for me as a first timer?
thisnameistaken replied to philparker's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks! That was a quick reply and a very good point as we do a lot of acousitc numbers, folk and MOTR mainly with acoustic guitars....
Also opens up the opportunity to do some busking too then. Win. -

thisnameistaken replied to philparker's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Get the one you like the sound of. EUBs don't sound like double basses so if you want the sound of a double bass, buy a double bass. Yes they are impractical to transport and store and difficult to amplify and to care for and all that nonsense, but if you've decided you want one there's no substitute really. I've ended up with two! Oh and: The main reason I bought the first one was to have an acoustic bass instrument that could keep up - acoustically - with a dreadnought guitar or two. If you want to go play unamplified with other acoustic instruments then an EUB won't do. -
The Other Notes....? Moving away from Root and 5th
thisnameistaken replied to WillEdwards's topic in General Discussion
Yeah I know what you're saying but it's hard when the intervals that are the furthest forward are almost totally unrelated to the movement of the melody. I sometimes think jazz is all about trying not to listen to anybody else whilst trying to make them all **** up. -
Yes you could because the harmony is always there, even when it is obfuscated to within an inch of its life.
Hmm. I can sometimes sit there even with a chart and not be able to work out where I am in the head let alone figure out the changes by ear from some herbert plonking five humans' worth of fingers down for every chord. I definitely need some lessons.
