1. Do you know what strings are currently on it? Find out before you think about replacing them - swapping strings is a pricey business. As for the height of the strings: If you stick a ruler against the end of the fingerboard and you find there's a 10mm-ish gap between the fingerboard and the E then maybe they could stand to come down a bit. If you don't have a ruler handy, try slipping your little finger under each string - if it's anything looser than a comfortable fit under the E then again you could probably do with a lower bridge.
2. I still haven't had a professional fettle the bargain bass I bought from gedo-musik a couple of months back. I keep meaning to do it but I don't want it to go away for however long it would go away for. :/ I bought a Rode NT1-A the other day and while trying it out I stuck it infront of my bass at bridge height and jammed away, and was really surprised at what a lovely airy, woody sound it's got. I know there are some things that can be improved in terms of playability (finish on the back of the neck is poor) but I'm curious to know if it could sound even better with some professional attention. My other bass is living with a friend while her bass gets repaired though, so I have a wait until I can think about doing it.
3. Only have a tiny car so this could be handy. PM-ed.
4. You must be due a change of luck soon Clarky. Have you been throwing black cats through mirrors or something?
5. Difficult to say. I bought mine - a '91 just like his - for £670 on eBay a few years back. I watched another one sell a while back for £1050 and it turned out it was the guy who sold me his, buying another one! I would hope they would sell easily for £1000 - 1200, but that doesn't always happen. I would recommend he keep it, to be honest. Unless he can afford to be very patient in waiting for it to sell for a sensible price.
6. I'm amazed that software can do that. Really impressive. I can only assume it's all synthesised or you'd need a mountain of samples and a mountain of RAM. Credit to them they've done an awesome job. Edit: Actually just went looking and it turns out there's 34Gb of samples involved.
7. Tbh I prefer jazz necks and I prefer a J front pickup soloed to a P pup, so I would still rather have a jazz than a precision. Possibly with a neck mudbucker instead of a bridge pup. :-)
8.
I still don't get it help an old girl out here!
It's just one of those things that turns out to be true. I think when you're young you crank the bridge pickup in an attempt to stand out and be heard, but when you're no longer shooting for 'whiz kid' status you realise it's more important to make the band sound good, and a nasal parping sound doesn't really do that.
9. Nice photos, looks a real beauty.
10. Once you get over 30 you never use the J pickup again anyway.
11. Choclat on her 'funk box' is the best solo in that tune.
12. Hey man I'll take it, I'd like to see if it tames the dead spots when I'm trying to record my OC-2. Will donate, hang on...
13. Registering an interest if your sale doesn't go through.
14. Looking at that Allianz link, do I need two policies if I have double basses and bass guitars I need to insure?
15. Yeah the mobile site is a good compromise I think, it works well. An app wouldn't be worth the development IMHO, but it might be worth asking your developer what it would cost to include a file upload interface on the mobile site if that's a feature people need/want. Edit: Ah, didn't know it was impossible on the iPhone.
16.
Interesting! Not particularly well written though, and some of the comments are extremely subjective - for example: "Jaco Pastorius was unquestionably the greatest musician to ever wield a bass guitar." Oh really?
Nonsense, I've seen loads of guitarists pick up basses from time to time.
17. There's a thread on TB at the moment where one of his customers is ranting about the quality of the finish. I haven't read the thread properly so I don't know if the customer is right or not, but it might be worth reading before you order one.
18. What does this weigh with those speakers?
19. I think the line on Forget Me Nots is really nice. Slap bass is usually way overdone which is why I think nobody likes it but that's much more restrained and appropriate.
20. So is it 32", or 30", or... And when you said £435 picked up you don't mean from the USA do you?
21. Hi man, picked up from where, and what's the scale length on these?
22. +1 on insurance. We got a boxer from the RSPCA in January and I fork out quite a bit each month in insurance, but the way he goes it's only a matter of time before he takes a leg off chasing a combine harvester or something so I might as well have good insurance. Plus he's white, and white ones are often dogged (sorry) with illnesses apparently.
