1.
Get a teacher! Seriously. the upright needs to be learnt from a good teacher. You live in a bigger town than I by far, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a teacher. Did I mention you should find a teacher yet?
That's the plan, I just need to work out what I want to be taught first. I did have a couple of lessons with BC's own Geoff Chalmers last year and he put me on the right track with DB technique, very valuable knowledge, so I'll be calling him again when I can explain what it is I want to learn next.
2. I really need to get some decent practise material going on. I've spent the last couple of years learning to play the DB and haphazardly expanding my theory knowledge but it's been slow going learning 'by chance' as it were.
3. Another +1 for the budget Yamahas. Also the current Squier range are very good value. Can't comment on Ibanez but plenty of players started on their budget instruments so I'd imagine they are worth a punt. There's a lot of choice at the budget end of the market these days, best time ever to start playing bass.
4.
Chances are you could buy a new car nevermind tyres!
TBH I paid £425 for my current car and some parts of it actually work. To be fair I bought the car in Feb when my old one failed its MOT at an inopportune moment, and if it gets me to work for one more week it will have paid for itself in saved rail fares. It shouldn't be twice as cheap to drive to work as it is to take public transport. Madness. :/
5. I wonder what sort of band's bass player would play one of those. Or if it's intended solely as a studio or bedroom bass.
6. Also with regard to users inadvertently selling stuff for below the typical market rate: Quite often users ask for valuations in the other gear-specific subforums and they can usually judge a good selling price from the responses they receive in those threads. Also searching for similar items which have sold in the past can help, but some sellers are in the habit of removing the price from their thread when an item is sold. I wish they wouldn't tbh.
7. Aargh I just bought a bass, but this would be perfect as an upgrade to my busking bass. Must have a think. >:~/
8. That's a lovely looking bass, I'm sure it will turn up soon. I've shared your Facebook link.
9. If you don't come up with any specific details then I reckon you could expect to see up to £500 for an all-ply 3/4 in playable condition with no structural issues or buzzes. If it has a carved top it will be worth more. If it actually sounds nice it could be worth even more!
10. So is this a carved bass? I do a lot of busking so the louder the better for me, but I also need my bass to be fairly sturdy and to have a big, deep sound. What's the tone like? Edit: Ack, sorry, I see you said it sounds deep. Lots of bass from it then?
11.
Love rears it ugly head Living Color
You're playing this at your own wedding? Hahaha.
12. A lot of LP and HP filters swap the phase, the Meatball circuit does it too (although it's unaffected in BP mode). Bit of a pain in the arse.
13. All part and parcel of playing DB I suppose. Sorry to hear it though Clarky, hope it's not too pricey.
14. The Hartke LH500 has lots of power, sounds good, and is cheap. Would save you money for a lightweight neo cab. I use an LH500 and a Schroeder 1212L, cab is easy to carry up stairs (I live in a first floor flat myself), then I do the amp and pedalboard one in each hand. I don't get tons of bottom end from the Schroeder but it's a good even sound and plenty loud. I've never felt like I missed having a bigger cab.
15. Glad I've got a big flat then. I've ended up with two double basses, planned to stick them both in the same alcovey-corner but it's not the easy fit I thought it would be. :/ Maybe I'll have an upstairs bass and a downstairs bass.
16. I think the Line 6 M5 does a better job of being a Whammy than any Whammy.
17. If a band I know ask to borrow my gear and I know their bassist is going to treat it like my gear and not his gear, and they don't make a habit of it, then that's fine. If a band I don't know, or don't like, or a 'promoter' asks to borrow my gear then I'll probably say no. Unless they want to give me a deposit for the full value of it first.
18. I currently drive 35 miles to work and back each day because even with the current fuel prices it's about half the cost of using public transport. Maybe this is the government's way of making the trains look like good value?
19. There's a video on Youtube demonstrating loading a DB into a saloon via the passenger door. Looks a bit of a faff but it works.
20. I offered to play drums for a friend's punk trio but I'd taken my own body weight in shrooms and the best I could manage was drooling a little bit and falling off the stool. Was pretty punk of us to self-destruct before we'd even played a note though.
21. Wow. My first 'proper' bass was an RBX550M (before that I had an +++AWESOME+++ £50 plywood Jazz copy that would now be worth around £400 ***LAWSUIT***). It's nice to see another one.
22. Take it easy. Stop if you need a rest, pick it up again in a couple of minutes, eventually you'll build your stamina up. Don't continue to play if you're fatigued though definitely do have that rest or you could start slipping into bad positions and hurting your tendons. It does take some time to get comfortable and familiar with it. In the mean time enjoy the experience of getting any tune out of something so enormous, and take the opportunity to learn about less being more - given that you probably can't play many notes right now, make them good ones in good places.
23. The psychobilly guys I've known who slap steel strings buy solo sets and tune them to standard tuning, usually spirocore solos.
24. Lloyd Brevett, MCA and now Duck Dunn.
25. There's a BB1025x in the for sale forum at the moment for (IIRC) £600. Well worth a look. Very handsome bass.
