1. They were supposed to be playing in Leeds this Sunday but they cancelled. :/ Saw them in Newcastle last year, I still go when they're around but they aren't a patch on the original band.
2. How thick are the tops on other basses with rear-routed controls? They can't be much different surely?
3. I switched back from a 6 to a 4 about ten years ago and I've had four strings since then. Must admit I'm looking at 5s at the moment, but I don't know if I'll change back to 4 again after a little while with a 5.
4.
... Too hot an input overloads the pedal an while it makes noise still it is thinner and, lo-fi and actually drops in volume. Still a usable sound - but not the intended one!
Yeah that will be the low impedance at the input - the Wooly Mammoth does the same thing, sounds thin and nasal with actives.
5. Yes your bass is active. 'Active pickups' is more often than not a misnomer because the pickup itself is, technically speaking, passive, but typically we refer to the pickups as being active, rather than the rest of the electronics, it's just a figure of speech. But anyway, yes, the output of your bass is coming from an active preamp, and as such the output will indeed look different to the first pedal it reaches. Passive output has typically higher impedance than active (actives lower the impedance to help the signal travel down long cable runs with out losing high frequencies (aka 'Tone suck'). This is overall a good thing. However, as you've just discovered, there are some fuzz circuits out there that are designed to work with passive guitar signals, and they don't always sound very good or work very well with active signals (the Wooly Mammoth is a famous example of this problem). There's really only one solution if you really, really want to use this pedal, and that's to put a device infront of the pedal that will ramp your signal's impedance back up so it looks like a passive bass to the fuzz pedal. This thread might give you some idea of what would be required. Also bear in mind that any pedal that expects to see a passive pickup at its input is going to be confused if you send your passive guitar signal through another pedal before it hits the picky pedal, because unless the first pedal is true-bypass (or switched off) it will almost certainly drop the signal to low impedance before it passes it on to the picky pedal. Personally I think it's best to avoid these kinds of pedals. There are usually other options out there.
6. I would prefer a low-pass filter for this, so you can progressively roll off the highs and add a peak to the lows to see just how far you want to go with it. Any Lovetone Meatball clone (Robot Factory Meatwad, 3Leaf Groove Regulator, Barge Concepts Grinder) would be up to the task as well as the pedals mentioned above. But if you are using a LPF you have to be a bit more careful with it or you'll just end up with a wall of woof.
7. I don't think he's coming back guys.
8. I still quite like 'Testes, one two'. Twenty years of it and I still chuckle.
9. The Skints - Part & Parcel So much talent in this band it's bizarre, four piece band and three of them are awesome vocalists and lyricists in addition to their instrumental duties. If you have any interest in reggae at all buy it. Less punk than their first album, and way more diverse from track to track, stunning when you think they had to use pledgemusic to get it made in the first place. Best band in the country at the moment?
10. Ah glad to hear it - I've already got a pretty deep-sounding bass and I'm looking for something more lively to do the stuff it doesn't do, so I'm sort-of in the opposite position to you. Very relieved to hear it's not what I wanted, and equally glad it's up your alley.
11. BAD CLARKY! BAD! How's Emlyn's bass? I never could've justified the cost but I'd been looking at it longingly for a few weeks and he's only down the road from me. Glad you took it and saved me the anguish.
12. One more question about the 22 - does it have a beveled fingerboard?
13. SFX 'Loop Logic' on this page. It was designed to replace my LS-2, and to be the only pedal that is always in my signal path so it had to have an excellent quality line driver in it. Not cheap but was literally designed to do exactly what you're asking for.
14. What's a Blade? I dunno, I've had my Thumb bass for... 7 years now I think? It's not perfect but I've been happy with it for a long time. Most people here seem to keep basses for about six months, but gush shamelessly about their qualities for the whole of those six months, and also in the For Sale ads they post in month seven.
15.
that you love so much... for me its that classic 70's spacing jazz growl and punch from my MIJ 75 jazz... the amazing neck.. the simplicity of the 2 volumes and the tone.. it does what it does, and more, so well...
Yeah I like Jazz basses but they'd be better with one volume and a blend wouldn't they? Always pissed me off, that. Hope I haven't ruined your love-in.
what makes your bass very cool to you....?
Which one? They all have issues to be honest, just like yours.
16. The Mail Online is basically an exercise is creating a story out of a photo. Preferably a story that belittles somebody in some way. Apparently it's massively popular, which makes me want to slaughter more humans than usual.
17. That's about the same weight as my dog. Trust me you are going to hurt yourself trying to get that thing in the bath.
18. I was in MOR Music in York the other day and he's got these Chinese bass strings in that he's selling for £5 a pack or something silly. He said 'They're not sh*t', with a surprised look on his face. I haven't tried them but they must be worth a punt at that price.
19. So to get back to the topic, I haven't heard his new album, would anyone here recommend it? To a music listener, not a bass player - I don't listen to music just for the bass player.
20. They have the death penalty over there don't they? We live in hope.
21.
music is also about excellence
The best guitar solo I've ever heard is on Dead Milkmen's 'Punk Rock Girl'. Fans of Pink Floyd would probably go purple in rage at that. Excellence is a subjective quality.
22. I really like the look of the new Yamaha BB-xs, although unfortunately your £600 falls right between the low-budget and mid-range models.
23. Or if you can't make friends, play songs like Mustang Sally.
