1. I don't have anything but some advice: Have you seen the bass wheels you can buy, that go in your endpin hole? That way you can use any soft case and just have the wheel sticking out between the zips. I would imagine a cloth case fitted with castors is going to tear around the rivets, and a hard case fitted with castors won't go in your car, so an endpin wheel might be a better solution. They are also pneumatic so would give your bass a much softer ride than nylon castors. Some pickups work better on some basses than others. If your bass is very resonant and grand-sounding you might want to look at the Realist or the Full Circle, whereas for ply basses you'll probably get good enough results from a bridge wing piezo like the Bass Max, but in any case you may need a specialist preamp to get a decent sound - many bass guitar amps can't handle the ultra-high impedance input from a piezo pickup.
2. Me'shell N'degeocello?
3.
I am getting a lot of "it'll be alright on the night" or "it'll eventually sound good" when we are getting new material together. The keyboard player learns the tunes chordally but not rhythmically. When i suggest that the timing is wrong he replies with "it'll be alright on the night" - but its not. Its the same.
One band member would often say "I'll play it right at the gig". Glad you're confident because I'm not. This band member also told me she didn't practice at all outside of band rehearsals. She's also the one who eventually called me a 'bully' and said "I'm not going to be made to feel bad for making a mistake - everybody makes mistakes", to which I replied "Not everybody makes the same mistakes for a year". Shortly before I left the band.
4. I bought a bass with a GK-3B pickup on it earlier this year and gave it a fair go with the GR20 floor unit. Tracking was much better than I expected but I just didn't dig using midi, even though it opened up a ton of new sounds.
5. I don't like the sound of them either. Performance is good, not too many artefacts, but the sounds are a bit cheesy as deej says.
6. I wanted a Sandberg before, and I want one more now.
7.
Not sure about the answet to your question but Innovation Silver Slaps have a different coloured silk for each string. What type of strings are they, steels or gut alike nylons?
Innovation strings have different colours at the peg end, but the whole set has matching colours at the bridge. I've seen people (and done it myself tbh) mix brands because they like the pizz punch and sustain of steel E and A, but want something more rounded for a better bowed sound on the D and G. My first guess would be that the red strings are spirocores and the blue are superflexibles. You should ask the shop what's on it, they ought to know. There's a lot of variety in bass strings so it's worth always knowing what you're playing, experimenting with different sets is expensive and a pain in the arse.
8. Cheers Gareth, all good advice, and some stuff I hadn't considered.
9. After 2 years of playing my ply 3/4 I was thinking of getting a carved or hybrid 4/4 bass, bigger mostly for more acoustic volume. I guess if I can still span a tone at half position then I might as well have a 4/4, no? Actually Gareth, would you say your bass is loud?
10. I don't have an answer to this specific question but yeah I play more when I'm upset or angry and I like what I play more at those times. About ten years ago I went through a weird period of having panic attacks and struggled to cope with them - they'd come and go but while they were happening they were horrible. I found out that if I picked up my bass (a 6-string Corvette Proline at the time) and noodled on it, the panic attack would go away. Weird. Music therapy? I think it was because it was the one thing I could do without consciously thinking about it, and it was a big distraction.
11. I'm in a similar position - I've been looking for a carved bass for the last 6 months but haven't found anything I'd like that isn't way over my budget. It seems there's ply basses, and then there's £3-6000 antiques. I'm not a professional player I can't justify spending that much. I'd also prefer a used bass because I'm going to be playing it in the street and I don't want to be the person who takes the finish off the edges, I want that to have been done already.
12. I never leave anything in the car. Actually I did once, but that was in a backstage field at a festival, with security on the gates.
13. Bought stuff from both Thomann and G4M. Both turned the orders around quickly and items arrived without problems. Also, there was none of the 'Let's pretend we've got this in stock and ship it next April when the container arrives' bollocks you get from some online retailers.
14.
Great idea this! I'm not taking to the Super Silvers, want to try either Braided or Honeys or similar... the Super Silvers haven't been bowed or even gigged.
Ah I really want to try Super Silvers but I only just put Honeys on my bass yesterday - too soon to swap even by my standards.
15.
I always find that digital effects don't carry at all,
You used the wrong digital effects.
What sounds good on your own will often not cut through a mix. ... Working out effects settings on your own isn't a great idea IMO.
It's as simple as that. If you have a lot of experience using effects on bass, or mixing recordings, and/or with your current band's sound, then you might get away with choosing bass sounds at home on your own and then tweaking them a little bit when you get together with the band, but mostly it's easier to do it with the band all playing, if you have time and they don't mind indulging you a little.
16. Got them on today. The E is a bit of a disappointment but I've got a couple of other Es I can try. Pizz on the other strings is pretty nice, comparable in sound to the spiro weichs I used to have on, but they feel a little lighter and more flexible a bit like evah weichs. Under the bow they take a little effort, again a bit like spiros, but sound pretty good. I think I've just confirmed to myself that I need two basses - I really like both the modern and trad sounds and I want both. Would still like to try Super Silvers though, I think the Silver Slaps are a bit too floppy for me but to be fair they are great to slap and bloody loud.
17. The OC-3 is a digital octaver with an OC-2 'mode' - so presumably it's just imitating the sound of the OC-2 rather than also containing and using the guts of an OC-2, and people are really fond of the OC-2 sound so probably not that keen on an emulation of it when they can have the real thing. The polyphonic stuff the OC-3 does is a completely different type of effect (digital resampling) and tends to sound a bit thin, not really very useful for bass, so again the OC-2 remains more popular amongst bassists.
18. Wow, nice one Bilbo.
19. Performing at a BIG bar on a beach which was full to capacity (about 1000 I think) on the hottest day of the year (41C) when someone had crashed into a telegraph pole outside and taken out power to the air conditioning. They had medical crews on standby who kindly gave me oxygen when I came off stage completely dripping wet. I remember there were three guys in the front who were yelling something at me and punching the air and I thought they were probably being rude, so I wandered up to them and cupped my hand around my ear and yelled "You ****ing what?" and they yelled "YOU'RE AWESOME!". Hahaha.
20. The OC-2 sounds great (pretty sure it's what Tony Levin used on that track, it's also the pedal Pino used on the Paul Young stuff) but they're not so cheap used any more because everybody wants one. :/ Tracking is about as good as any analogue octaver.
21. This is exactly the sort of thing I'm trying to do at the moment, but I'm in Yorkshire. Good luck, maybe meet you in the middle one day.
22. TBH I saw a cheap used set of 140H on ebay which is why I was asking. I'll pop back with my impressions next week I guess.
23. You are probably treading on the sonic toes of your guitarist(s) or keyboard player when you turn the FX on. Add distortion to the bass when there are distorted guitars in the mix and you're just going to disappear. It's all a matter of having the space for all the sounds you've got going on. Consider whether you're using the effects in an appropriate way and if they add something to the song and if they do, try discussing the problem with the other members of your band, try to get them to leave you some space to do your thing.
24. They are on my list. I'm gradually working my way through different strings and trying not to sell any that I take off (although a friend took my Evah Pirazzi D and G...) in case they sound good on my imaginary excellent future bass that I'm never going to buy.
