No matter how you fare at the audition, this will be the starting point to getting your confidence back,
+1. It's just one audition, at least you're now at the stage where you're doing auditions, well done man. Edit: Might start reading threads before I reply to them...

How do you leave a band quietly ?
Say you're leaving but say you're willing to honour all booked gigs and any other gigs between now and the most distant in time gig but none after that date - unless they find a replacement before then, in which case you'll go sooner. They can't ask fairer than that.
I did this earlier in the year and it worked out OK. I left because I couldn't stand one of them (she was pathetic, cancelling gigs and rehearsals for petty reasons, etc.) but I am still on good terms with the others. We're doing some busking next weekend actually. -
You've already got a P and a J, why do you need a '50s P? Stop being silly. If you just have an irresistible urge to spend money then replace that Ashdown combo.

I only ever owned one Stingray and sold it because of the dead spots. I hope they're not all like that, but if they are, the trade in after-market necks should be booming.

F# Boom - Why was this note so loud?
thisnameistaken replied to BottomE's topic in General Discussion
Moving your cab will usually fix it, or move it to a different note. :/ As I understand it, it's because your cab is producing a wave which - when reflected back off a surface or surfaces - doubles in amplitude because the wavelength of the note is equal (or half, or a quarter of, or double...) to the distance from that surface, so the wave gets amplified by its own reflection. -
I quit my band in May and finished all the gigs I'd said I'd do by the end of July, so it's been pretty quiet since then. Definitely the right thing to do quitting the band though, and I'm still good friends with them all so it's worked out OK. Currently rehearsing with a singer/songwriter guy so I'll have some double bass gigs in the new year, also busking with the singer/guitarist from the band I quit, and planning to do the same with another singer/guitarist I met earlier this year, and another guy wants me to record some DB for a new project he's doing so generally the double bass side of things is picking up. Still no full-time gig though, and nothing on bass guitar at all. Trying to put together a project of my own but I've been stuck looking for a good drummer, which might never happen.

When was the last time you broke a string?
thisnameistaken replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
1997. But I broke a lot of strings in 1997. I was young. -

Ah right yeah I thought the guy with the djembe looked familiar.

That looks like All Saints church in York, I'm surprised I haven't seen you before I live not far from there.
... bought one, memorised a valve chart and hit the streets ... No one can ignore it, particularly when I'm wearing a gorilla costume.
You're my hero.
Nearly 3 stone lost this year, slowly through just regulating what I eat and, I'm embarrassed to say, not sitting around on Basschat all night! I post less but definitely have a lot more energy... should come with a health warning!
I put on a bit over 2 stone after quitting smoking and realised I was getting fat when I noticed my thighs were rubbing together as I walked one day. Took me about a year and a half to sort it out, but had the benefit of improving my diet and exercise at the same time, pretty painlessly I have to say, I don't miss the crap I'm not eating any more. -
In my experience it's very very hard to get anything approaching a musical noise out of a sousaphone. Horrible things.
I think they sound fantastic I honestly do. Obviously when played by someone who isn't as crap as I am. I think if I ever do master the sousaphone the next logical step would be to buy and install a pipe organ.

Hmm, didn't think it'd hurt this much
I don't think it's worth bothering with hand grips or squeezy balls or powerballs or whatever. You don't need to squeeze to be able to play bass.
+1 And the more strenuous stuff you put your wrists through, the more likely you are to end up with problems with swollen tendons etc. It's safer to just do what you need to (ie: playing the bass) and let your wrists rest in the down time rather than punishing them with exercises. -
Yeah I see quite a lot of stuff advertised as 'brand new' - maybe I'll just spend the extra tenner and get a literally brand new one...
-
Yeah that's just it I can't imagine where I'd find time to practise. I've been a half-arsed trombonist for years for the same reason so practically it probably wouldn't work for me, but still... Is it wrong to GAS for a sousaphone?
-
Yeah I can imagine it's hard work and difficult to find times and places to practise and find a gig and so on, but I think they sound great I'd love to get one and find a dixie band to parp along with.
-
Since I started busking with double bass I've had a real urge to buy a sousaphone, which was tempered a bit when I found out how expensive they are and tempered a bit more when I found out how bizarre three-valve brass instruments are to play, and a bit further when I thought about how little time I'd have to practise and how much more my neighbours would hate me, but I still want one. :/ So do any of you play it? Or any other unusual bass instruments?

If it wasn't for people replacing the sale price with the word 'SOLD' when they sell stuff.
