Drummers - where are the good ones
thisnameistaken replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
A Drummer is the most important member of a band
+1 A band can only ever be as good as its drummer. -
I met a guy once who'd come up with a design like that but I don't think he sold any. It's the second item down on this page: http://www.otheroom.com/namm98/Inst.htm
got kicked by one of the wife's horses yesterday afternoon.
And we're not allowed to suggest cruelty to animals. It's political correctness gone mad.
excercise and excersize,
Those are both wrong.
licence and license
And those are two different words - one is a noun, the other a verb. Examples you could've used: Defence, Offence.
I'm pretty sure it's "spelled" not "spelt"
They are both correct. 'Spelled' is more common in the USA, 'spelt' is English.

Cheapest and easiest way to amplify a Double bass
thisnameistaken replied to fatgoogle's topic in EUB and Double Bass
My head is an LH500 and it definitely didn't work with my piezo without a preamp to bring the impedance down to somewhere closer to a bass guitar. It works fine with the Fishman preamp to sort out the input signal, but be aware that the LH500 has quite a pronounced mid scoop with the EQ controls set 'flat', so you'll probably want to roll off quite a lot of the bass and treble knobs as well as increasing the mid to get a more natural sound. I would definitely try a preamp before you think about replacing the pickup. The pickup might sound good but it'll be impossible to tell until you put it into an amplifier that can cope with it. -

Yeah some amps don't need a preamp necessarily (although the Fishman is handy for its feedback-battling features) but it's a matter of trying it and seeing what it sounds like. My Bassmax through my Hartke head sounds horrifically thin, presumably due to the Hartke preamp not being designed to deal with the high impedance of the piezo pickup. Stick the Fishman preamp inbetween and it all works. -

I would highly recommend providing your own monitoring. -
I've seen a lot of bass players who could've got by with one string. In '80s hair metal bands, particularly.
Folks - all references to hurting cats have been removed after multiple reports have been submitted to the mods. Seems there are lots of animal lovers on Basschat... so lets please keep the animal cruelty out of it.
Well I've never knowingly hurt a cat, but well done to whoever has the sense of humour failure documented above, I'm sure the mods had nothing important on. :/
i always keep bits of old strings for fettling nuts, tensioned in an old hacksaw frame they're perfect for lowering the action a tiny bit or just to smooth out rough spots on the grooves..
Ooh an actual good idea. I would never think of this sort of thing because I always get more blokey people to do anything practical that needs to happen. I am not allowed to play with tools.

Just re-stringing my Warwick and my girlfriend wondered aloud what could be done in terms of new uses for old bass strings. I've always just thrown mine away, and I know some of you are gypsies and you just wash them and put them back on, but has anyone found a new use for old strings at all?

Everything you need to know about wood
thisnameistaken replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
So you have tried identical basses but for the woods involved and found that they sound considerably different? If so then you I defer to your more relevant experience. -
Well lets put the opinion in a clearly defined context for your benefit. If someone is curious about what the wood sounds like and wants to remove the influence of preamp and pickups...yes it is.
OK, I agree that if wood does make a difference then that difference would be negligible anyway in an electric bass guitar. -
Ironically my stingray and j-bass are supposed to sound identical to one another when played acoustically given they are made from a maple neck and ash body...and they don't. It's a no-brainer for me.
It's important what an electric bass guitar sounds like acoustically. -

I've had the M9 for a couple of years. It's excellent for stuff like pitch shifting, delays, reverbs, and the occasional oddity like the synths, the ring mod and the goatkeeper style tremolo, but there isn't a lot of choice with chorus and flange, only one phaser I like, generally I don't think it's a good box for modulation effects. It's also weak when it comes to envelope filters because there's no global sensitivity setting (for some infuriating reason). The biggest strength of the M9 is the expression pedal implementation, so if you like to modulate effects with your foot at all you will love it.

Could You Be the Worst Looking Bass in the World
thisnameistaken replied to 4 Strings's topic in Bass Guitars
It upsets me to look at these.
Yeah the Bongo has had long enough to grow on me now, and failed. Awful looking thing. -
Leaving a band, without another band to go to. Yes or No?
thisnameistaken replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I left my band in June without another gig lined up. We'd been recording our second EP and the process brought home some of the shortcomings that I didn't think were likely to improve, so I decided to move on. I didn't see any point continuing just for the sake of it, even though I liked the songs and liked my bandmates. Got a couple of things in the pipeline now but in the mean time I've been working harder on learning the double bass and coming up with ideas for new songs, which I might not have had time for if I'd still been doing the band, so it's all good. I say if your mind is made up then leave, and let them get on with finding someone new ASAP. -
I've owned a couple of Warwicks but only played Spectors, never bought one. I like both. I would say Warwicks have their own kind of sound where Spectors are perhaps more versatile / generic. I think Warwicks look nicer which has surely swayed me towards them but I also just love the sound of my old Thumb and I've never come across another bass that sounds like it.

"Everybody makes mistakes, I'm not going to be made to feel bad for making a mistake" Aw you poor thing. My reply? "Not everybody makes the same mistakes for a year". -
She's still fairly foxy our Bev. Don't like this new Vegas-style stuff though, and who goes on Titchmarsh? Honestly.
