How much swapping of basses goes on here?
Dubs replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
One thing ive noticed (at least i think i have) is that stuff that gets sold on a few times doesn't seem to go down in price (in fact i can name at lest one thing that was advertised again for more that it was brought for). Am i missing something? Does gear only loose its value from new once? i'm talking everyday stuff, not vintage.
Possibly, but once something is “used” it’s “used”…if you get me. If Mr.A sell a used MIM Fender to Mr.B for £200 and then 3 weeks later Mr.B wants to sell it on, why should he sell it for less than £200? Chances are that it would have been sold for a very fair price in the first place and eventually a Mr.C will appear who is more than happy to buy it at the fair price of £200, and then possibly Mr.C will eventually sell it on for the same price of £200 to Mr.D if the bass has remained in literally the same condition (I think my point has been completely lost in an awful use of metaphors). There’s generally a forum etequit that goes along the lines of – if you pick up a bargain on here but end up wanting to sell it on after a while then offer it up on here for a similar price that you bought it for before shifting it elsewhere. Each to their own though, no one really owes anything to anyone else on this forum but it’s nice to try and keep it feeling like a community with a certain amount of mutual respect…that’s the way I see it anyway. -
How much swapping of basses goes on here?

The last 5 basses I've owned or sold have been either bought, sold, or swapped on this forum...and I've only been on here since March! 2 of those basses have an RRP of over £1k, and 2 of the other 3 have an RRP of over £1.5k, so they weren't exactly cheap basses but I never needed to worry about anything as everyone who I've dealt with on here (in regards to basses specifically) have been absolute diamonds I’ve also bought and sold over £2k worth of other gear on here in that time and almost every time I’ve dealt with someone on here the transaction has been absolutely seamless. I wonder if you’d get that with ebay… -
Reminds me of when speaker manufacturers present a frequency-response curve to advocate the performance of their product - in isolation, without detailing all the specifics of setup - distances, angles, etc, etc - completely meaningless in terms of providing information. But don't they all just love printing one in their glossy marketing brochures.
One ‘top’ brand that I totally despise is Bose, who market their products really well but sell absolute sh*t…try and find any detailed specifications about their products…they don’t publish them because their shocking when you relate them to the cost of what they sell for. Their other reason for not publishing the technical specifications relating to their amplifiers and speakers is because Amar Bose, the founder of the Bose Corporation, doesn’t believe that there is a measurable relevance to the perceived quality in relation to the measurable acoustic or electrical performance/specification…what a crock of sh*t, and IMO, what a shoddy way of hiding the relatively poor performance of their products.

Ah this is an absolute classic! I love ripping the sh*t out of Saturday workers at Dixons et al with regards to their absolute and total lack of any technical audio knowledge to do with this type of thing. PMPO = Peak Music Power Output. It’s a very unscientific measurement that doesn’t even have a standard way of measuring it but is often measured as being the absolute peak power output that is possibly achievable of the amplifier or combined sum of the amplifiers in a system (often used with budget home cinema systems and very cheap PC speakers etc). It’s basically bullshit and meaningless. Manufactures don’t even agree on what “PMPO” stands for (exemplifying how much of a useless term it really is) – it has also been known as Peak Momentary Performance Output. RMS (root mean square) is measured by averaging the amplifier’s instantaneous power output over a prolonged period of time. PMPO can be measured over half a second, i.e if the amplifier/driver has a momentary peak or survives a split second of 350W then the (sh*t) manufacture’s might label it as “350W PMPO” – totally pointless and never going to happen in a ‘real world’ application. Basically, steer clear of ANYTHING that is advertised as having a PMPO value as it’s going to be totally sh*t, or, if you’re going to buy it with this knowledge then fair play to you as you know what it is that you're buying. I’m sh*t at explaining stuff, but I know what mean I’ll find some good links for a proper scientific explanation… Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMPO ...and something else - http://cbll.net/articles/pmpo
Had my eye on a particular '90 for a while now. She's justifiable now since her location isn't too far away. Snag is I gotta prise her out of her owners hands. Saw her today and my god the pics on the listing don't do her justice!
You’re running on very dodgy ground there my friend if the proprietor is not will to let her go…some things just aren’t meant to be. Put the GAS on hold
I was thinking of going myself if only to meet the other basschatters but thought the cost a little too high... If you fancy chipping in to the petrol costs we could car share yours or mine either way
Fantastic, yeah I could definitely be up for this. I wasn’t planning on going due to logistics (lack of car on my part) but if this is viable then I will make arrangements to be free on the 27th, i.e square it with the boss (girlfriend) Are you coming from Barnsley then? I’m in Derby… -
I don't know enough about Fender's to really comment, but he's giving away lot of info if it's not a genuine '74 US bass. It looks immaculate for a 34 year old instrument…if it is indeed a 34 year old instrument.

I think this is a great idea mate. If I was in a gigging band at the moment (or the old lot were still around) then I’d definitely be up for arranging something like this. I’m just minus the f***ing band at the moment…
A huge +1 to that! Fender quality is just so variable across the ranges!
Too true, and shocking when you consider the premium on some of the MIA basses that are being marketed on the fact that they are American built.

Just bought Dave’s Unibass. It’s in amazing condition and was well packaged etc…top bloke and friendly communication, I wouldn’t hesitate to deal with Dave again. Cheers mate

my MIM telecaster felt great until i took the neck off now it feels like sh*t and needs a pro setup cos i just don’t have the knowledge to make it feel good again. The CIJ/MIJ basses that I've played have felt solid and well built and very nice to play, but that's more than i can say for some the American Fenders I've played let alone the MIM ones. IME the Jap Fenders are of a better quality than the Mex ones...and dare I say it, but even better than some US ones (opening myself up to some abuse ).
Don't know. I've never heard a series 2 cab and I'm afraid I'm not big on analysis anyway. My level of review just about runs to, "I like it cos it sounds great"! You can find details of these cabs on TalkBass. They've been comparing and discussing for at least 12 months!
yeah I don't get on with that forum on a navigational and ease of use aspect, as well as a general dislike of how American it is (adverts every-f***ing-where etc). I've read a bit on the various series 1 vs 2 threads and to be honest I've just wasted about 15 minutes of my life; A lot of people for and against each series for a varying number of reasons. Some people say the series 1 is louder and has a fuller and lower low end, and others are saying exactly the same thing about the series 2  It would be great to A/B a series 1 and 2 at one of the bashes… (this is my 1000th post what a sad f***er I am )

Lets 'ave it.
+1 I’m living in the north at the moment, but the locals are calling it the midlands, a bit like inthemiddlebutnotquitesurelands. Anything north of Luton is “The North”, that’s what the M1 signs tell me anyway.
