1.
To be fair to the cellar though, 99.99% of the people in there have no intention of buying, just herds of scruffy kids with no money wanting to try out £1000 basses, I reckon after dunno 5 years of dealing with that day in day out I might put up a sign too.
How can you justify/qualify that? Have you read the rest of this thread?
  2.
Sometimes...although sometimes a not so nice one....
Excuse my cynicism, but couldn’t this possibly be a case of good service for a well dressed city business man? I wonder what the service would have been like if you were wearing jeans and a t-shirt and were soaked through by the rain.
  3.
I've been following this thread with some interest - I work around the corner from Denmark St and have spent a fair bit of time (and cash) in a few of its shops. A few months back I saw the handwritten sign on the till in the Bass Cellar that Mike mentioned - "Want a new bass? Got no cash? Don't waste our time". I didn't like the shop too much before then (although to my shame have bought two pretty nice basses from them over the years, a Yamaha TR6 II and a US Jazz) but on seeing this I vowed to never buy anything from them again, not even a plectrum. Anyway, like many of you I've plenty of stories of bad experiences in the Bass Cellar, but last Friday I left work a little early and it was chucking it down, so rather than get soaked walking to the station thought I'd kill a few minutes to see if it stopped, and having worked my way through the other shops there was only one left and it was still raining....so I dropped in to see our mutual friends. While we don't know whether they've read (or actually responded) to this thread, something seems to be getting through to them. The sign is gone, and the two guys who were in there were friendly, pretty helpful (changed a duff battery, offered to tweak the setup on a bass), let me try a load of things just out of interest and the whole thing wasn't bad at all. If that was the first time I'd been there I'd definitely be going back. They've still got a way to go to make me break my vow over the sign on their till, but with this sort of feedback from the bass playing community there's a chance that they'll get better and learn to do it right....maybe they've started listening?
Do you wear a nice suit for work?
  4.
I'm still reeling from Bilbo's ridiculous comment. That's what set me off. I don't deny it. I'm bowing out. Ignorance is bliss, eh? In this case, ignorance saved me a shedload of time and money. Toodle pip!
fair doos
  5. When did this get personal guys? Some good points for and against have been made in this thread, but…
Advocacy of ignorance is not a defensible position to take.
If you don’t know then you don’t know, but you cannot deny that knowledge of music theory will benefit you as a musician. Bow out of this debate if you like – ignorance is bliss after all.
  6.
well well well!!! someones upset about something!! there's no need to be like that! i look at it this way (and by the way this is not ment to sound big headed in the slightest!! as i still have a bloody long way to go as a player) lets take singing as an example!! some people can naturally sing very very well with no training whatsoever......while others range from tone deaf or just plain useless to average and thats fine! now...with lessons anyone can be a "good" singer but does that mean the naturally talented one is somehow wrong or irrellivant?? obviously to be good at anything at all ("naturally talented" or not) you need to really work at it but just because you dont have lessons os study theory does not mean your not putting the work in!! ive worked bloody hard to get where i am today!!
How can you ‘naturally’ know music theory though? The topic in question is knowledge of music theory being a benefit on bass playing and if it's worth bothering with. You can be a physically naturally talented player (have the ability to play fast technical stuff and be a fast learner etc…) and know sweet FA about music theory. You don’t have to know what you’re playing to play other peoples bass lines or even to read the tab in the Rock School Grade 8 book, but try writing a bass line that’s worthy of being published in said Grade 8 book without knowing any music theory…you will find it nion impossible. It is true that some people are very naturally talented singers, but I’d bet you that they would struggle to finish a 7 date tour without any professional training or understanding of how to preserve their voice. Natural talent can be completely wasted if it isn’t helped along the way by a little bit of knowledge.
  7. Professional/formal lessons don’t necessarily make a good player, they are far from the most important thing when it comes to being a good musician. I think this is going on from what Bilbo said, but the bottom line is that the guys who haven’t been through the process of learning music theory (even the most basic music theory) are talking from a position of ignorance when it comes to appreciating the benefit that it gives you as a musician/bass player. The guys that have learnt and studied music theory are talking from a position of experience and know first hand the knowledge it provides you with as a musician and how it advances you as a player. How many people on here that have been through the process of learning music theory would tell someone that they don’t need it and it’s not worth the time to bother learning it? Compare that to the amount of people who haven’t learnt any music theory who are saying that it isn’t needed etc…
  8.
This is what is called a series of justifications. It all sounds perfectly plausible but what Chrisdabass is actually saying is that you can become a 'free and natural' player' without doing any work and, and this is the one that REALLY gets on my thruppnies, that people who have studied sound wooden because they have studied and had lessons. This is a fantastic way of justifying a lack of investment in your playing. Music is about 'expression and feel'? Of course it is. But its not about magic and the magic bass pixie coming along and sprinkling pixie dust on the chosen few. It is about gathering as much information as you need to make defensible decisions about note choices, groove playing, musica textures etc The trouble with 'natural' and 'untrained' players is that they are invariably one trick ponies who have a limited potential to find work. They are generally less informed about the wider musical world and fairly entrenched in a small generic silo. Outside of their comfort zone they struggle. The fact that some of the greatest musicians in the world can't read a note of music is neither here nor there. The question is what route is going to get you the most long term benefits as a player. I would advocate for systematic study over pixie dust everytime! If you want my opinion, if anyone ever tells you there is an easy way to learn the bass that doesn't require concerted study, give them a wide berth.
Totally agree. Aritsan – It’s not about having professional lessons, that has sh*t all to do with learning the theory behind what you’re playing. You don’t have to have lessons to read a book… It’s like learning a profession or trade; you don’t just get stuck in when it comes to fitting a gas boiler, you spend a couple of years training and you RTFM!! People in web design or IT can learn their trade ‘as they go’ or ‘learning on the job’ kind of thing, but if you study it and spend a bit of time learning about what you’re actually doing then you’re going to become a lot more efficient and capable of doing a whole lot more. Yes, you can learn bass without learning music theory, but you’re gonna be a much better player if you do learn it – that is undeniable.
  9. The singer/guitardest from one of my old band worked for a lighting company who provided “domestic lighting solutions” for parties and functions etc… They had loads of these 15M long red light rope things that he half inched and used for a gig - just put them all over the stage; all over the amps and the kit and along the front of the stage. it was completely covered in the f***ing things. The stage looked ridiculous and we all looked bright red cos these lights were properly bright! It was stuff like this – I think we ended up looking like pricks though cos no one found it funny  ...we didn't use them again.
  10. very nice, it's just come at the wrong time for me though
  11. can't you just smash it to sh*t at the end of your next gig? That would be fun and solve the problm of what to do with it...2 birds, but only 1 stone my friend
  12. Just a thought – have you thought about crossovers?
  13.
...the problem is it is as ugly as sin as I said before the only thing that would make it look worse is a Warwick badge
Oooo you cheeky little &%£*er!! Why I oughta…
  14. EDIT: Slight change of plan due to personal circumstances - I'll be relocating back to the sunny (or not so sunny) south within the next 5 or 6 weeks, so I'm after a band in or around Pompey. Occasional use of my own transport may also be available. _________________________________________________________________________ I’ve posted this elsewhere so I may as well post it here: I’ve been playing for about 8 years and I’ve been in many originals bands. I’ve played a fair few gigs over the last few years but I’m getting to the point where I’m fed up of playing toilet gigs in the middle of nowhere to 1 man and his dog when you consider the amount of effort it takes to write and practise good original songs. I’m a graduate of music and looking for a function/covers band who are playing paid weekend gigs (or even gigs during the week) for a means of earning a bit of cash and having a laugh at the same time. I’ve got pro quality gear (Warwick basses and a Genz Benz/Epifani rig) but transport may be an issue – I’m not currently running a car (although this may be subject to change in the not too distant future). I’m a talented and dedicated player who learns quickly and is willing to practise regularly. Any bands in the [s]derby[/s] Pompey/Hants area looking for a bass player? Email me at [email protected] Thanks, Ben

  17. Just out of interest, what does this do that the XT Live doesn't?
  18. i suppose it boils down to setting your own standards of musicality and developing the self drive and motivation to become a better musician let alone bass player (which you will be if you learn your theory ).

    Member Numbers?
On the subject of strange numbers; I've noticed some threads with a large number of replies but no views, how is this possible!?
I think that might be something to do with how often the server collects the data about topic views. I’d guess that the data about the number of replies is instantly recorded due to the nature of it. Honestly…I don’t have a clue

    Member Numbers?
Could it be that the allocation of numbers is done purely on a sequence, therefore next member is last current member + 1, and not by filling gaps left by registered members that have deleted their account?
Ah that would make sense, although I didn’t know it was possible to actually delete your account?
