1.
Never heard of strings having a "shelf life". I wouldn't worry about it.
+1 Unless you're after a super 'zingy' sound all of the time and you're restringing every month, I don't think there's anything to be worried about.
  2. I'm talking covers here, but I wouldn't bother with a £100 + 10% deal, and I'd only consider it if I knew that the venue would put the work in to promote the night. A good band is worth the money if the venue turns it into a proper live music event. It's not for the band to always bring along their mates to subsidise the door/bar take. I've played for too many half arsed promoters to give a sh*t that they're losing money because the only people there are people that the band have brought along. Play weddings and private parties. More work but a lot more money.
  3.
If Pete's offer falls through let me know as I'm very interested, particuarly being an electronics whizz
Still available
  4. Can't believe this hasn't gone. £450 is a steal for this.
  5.
That isn't creativity. That is teaching you how to use the tools and make your job easier.
Well that's like saying "you don't need to know how to play a bass, just hum the line you're thinking of..."
  6. Not sure what's wrong with it, been quoted £35-£40 to maybe get it working but it's a complex pedal so who knows what's wrong with it. Could be a very simple fix. Video here made by another BCer - No idea what to ask for in terms of price so to keep this in line with forum rules I'll put it up for trade. Open to anything.
  7. Hey Joe, great avatar! Did you take the pic? Good spot if so... Bump for the Gremlin as well - used to own one and they're certainly versatile.
  8.
I think it's a combination. You can't teach creativity, which is what music is all about (for me anyway)...
I know what you mean, but I'd say that in a way you can teach creativity. When I was starting out my teacher used to teach me to improvise around scales so learning scales didn't become monotonous and boring and it was far more musically relevant than smashing up and down a load of scales. He taught me what worked well where and why it worked well. This moved me on leaps and bounds in my creativity in terms of writing bass parts for band stuff. If you don't know something exists, how can you use it as a creative tool...?
  9. I think the question is too broad to get any usable data from it. It looks like you're trying to get the answers to 2 or 3 different things in 1 question.
  10. GAS is over rated. I've not had any GAS for almost 18 months and I'm more content with my sound/gear than ever. Be happy with what you've got - the new 'must have' will not revolutionise bass playing or live up to the hype...

    DIY 1x10 Cab
What did you use to fill/stuff the cab?
Just ripped out the inside of an old cheap pillow, it worked well! Just make sure you stick it down with lots of glue otherwise you could have all sorts of problems once there's a lot of air being pushed around...
  12. Good shout. If you look closely at the pattern of the wood, you can tell that the pics are of 2 different basses...
  13. The only thing reassuring about that auction is the collection in person bit. 0 feedback seller, very poor pics for a high value instrument, poor description... Lovely bass though
  14.
Yours possibly has a body made out of Heavy Northern "baseball bat" Ash - one of CBS's cost-cutting measures as it was cheaper than the lightweight swamp ash. My S8 serial Precision (actually made in 1981) is made of this. I used to lend it to the Royal Navy to use as an anchor for an aircraft carrier.
...and who said P's weren't versatile?
  15. If you don't ask you don't get. With instruments in music shops, I always see the marked price as meaning "offers around", and sometimes it works. If you just ask "what's the best price on this?" you may be surprised...
  16.
Bloody hell it's gone already - told you not to wait!!
It had sold before you posted the topic, it was quick!
  17. Had to run off stage once during a 2 hour covers set. Professional as ever, the band laughed and told everyone I was taking a piss, came back onto the stage to a round of applause...
  18.
You can spend bonkers money on an expertly crafted, prestigious branded bike, but it's not going to make you a better cyclist
You'd be surprised
  19. If you got your name around enough then I'm sure they'd be a market for it - almost every BFM build thread has a post asking about this.
  20.
Can anybody reccommend a courier that will insure a guitar when not in a hardcase?
If it' not in a hardcase, then I guess any courier company will be able to argue that it was not properly packaged if any damage was to occur. What is it you're looking to send without a hardcase? If it's cheap then take the neck off and package it in a small box with lots of bubblewarp.
  21. The first ding on a bass is the most painful, but give it a month and you might be able to live with it. Act in haste with any DIY and you could f*** it up completely, so be prepared for that. I've used the damp cloth and iron technique on a natural finish Warwick, and that worked really well.
  22.
I do wonder how well a gigbag would cope with something falling the neck, for example...? Similarly, I wonder how many passengers on the Titianic were thinking 'Well, it hasn't sunk yet!' right up until the point it hit the iceberg. ...and immediately afterwards thought 'I wish I'd just gone to Blackpool for my holidays this year...'
Not bad actually. The case I use has "dual-sided high density ABS plastic shell inside the case" and rediculously thick padding (which also gives a nice snug fit). When I said "decent gig bag", I didn't mean one of the £30 Warwick ones. Anyway, each to their own, and everyone has to individually assess the risks to their instrument based on their typical usage/trasportation/gigs, etc... Based on some of the above comments, I can only assume that a lot of you haven't seen or used a decent gigbag? I'm not talking about cheap "business generators", I'm talking about something that costs as much as, if not more than, a good hard case. I've owned cheap hard cases that I wouldn't trust to protect a bass as well as the gigbag I'm currently using.
