Dubs that homebuild is interesting, did you design it yourself? Looks nice and deep like a TC
Yeah, designed myself using rough dimensions worked out with a little help of WinISD. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0&start=0 Turned out that I made the port a little too long/wide so the low end sounds a little flabby - easily fixable though, much more so than if I made it too small. I'm half thinking about blocking up the port and making it sealed. Need to spend the time experimenting.
What originals bands that play a lot of covers too? That seems to work very well
That's our situation anyway. Kind of ended up falling into it then started getting our name around. We're now starting to get bookings through some fairly good agents in the extended 'South East' region. Seem to get more bookings for covers than original stuff - only difference is that with one type of gig you get paid (sometimes very well), play to an audience that get up and dance and have a really good time, the other type of gig is the opposite and can be a massive pain in the arse.
IME - yes they can
+1 We've played gigs for promoters who have put the night on and used us (the covers band) as the crowd pull, and it can work well depending on the venue/time of year/quality of the band. In my limited experience, if you sound good you can get a lot of people walking in off the street who are looking for a bit of live music. With regards to "pay to play" for a covers band, that if far from the experience I've ever had. It's always based on an agreed fee and I wouldn't play a covers gig on any other terms.
The large majority of vintage guitars sold in the USA over the last 15 years haven't been bought by musicians, they've been bought by non-players with high salary jobs. Most of the really desirable Fenders & Gibsons are out of the price range of your average player, and the crap you couldn't give away 20 years ago is heading that way too.
Kind of back to my original points then; buying a piece of history. High 'non-playing' earners would, I guess, buy them as ornaments/showpieces. I very much doubt that high earners would be buying £5k, £7k, £10k+ mass produced vintage instruments purely as investments. There are far more lucrative ways to invest money than on a fairly unpredictable market that is, for the most part, based on fashion. I know there's a big market in 'breaking' them for parts though...
You didn't mention what I think is one of THE main reasons - the fact that people see vintage Fenders as a risk free investment that will reap them serious dividends if they hang onto it for 10 years or so.
No investment is risk free. These things (fashion) come in circles; as unlikely as it may seem right now, in 10/15 years time the arse may completely drop off the end of the vintage Fender market and people could see their 'investments' worth 30% less than they paid for them today. I'm not sure that anyone other than a musician would 'invest' in the vintage Fender market. Anyway, I think it's a fairly consequential/subordinate reason for buying a vintage Fender, i.e. if I had £2k to make a 'risk free' investment with, I'd probably put it into Premium Bonds rather than the vintage Fender market.
I don't actually agree with those reasons, not that they're wrong, just peripheral to what I think is the main reason - which I believe to be that most people who want a vintage Fender think they will have a living thing in their hands which they can have a relationship with, a best friend upon which they can visit all their pain and joy, and stare at lovingly for long periods of time. They want to be able to say 'this is my bass, we speak in tongues together, I need no other'.
Ok, I get what you're saying, but that could be said of any bass of any age/origin/provenance/value.
And you have to ask yourself..... why you want a vintage fender? I don't think the old ones are worth what they go for...
This is OT, but I think there are 3 reasons why people pay the money for a vintage Fender: For a lot of people it's about buying a piece of history. For others it's about image and the peer approval that comes with owning a vintage Fender. Others, rightly or wrongly, believe they're the holy grail of electric bass and anything else is a compromise. A lot of people buy them for a combination of the above, but essentially they are the reasons.

Indeed My Inbox has gone up to 28 pages, and although I don't use BC as much these days, it would still be a good function to have. The same search function that each individual forum has got would be great...

I'd definitely appreciate something like this. Asked this a couple of years ago but it seems it wasn't feasible then - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=35714&hl

Down with this sort of thing.

Interesting thread. I currently have the gain on mine set to about 1.5 and the volume to about 4 and this is LOUD gigging volume with my Tec 4x10. Pre gain break-up starts happening at about 2 and is completely saturated by 3.5/4. Think I may try a pair of JJ 12AX7s before spending silly money on anything else...

Just listened to that a few times. Bloody great.
I realise the gauge might be a special combination but are the basically just regular strings?
That is essentially it - just a custom gauge combination.

When I had an RMX2450 I mounted it in a standard Boschma rack and the end of the amp where the rear mounts would go sit very nicely on the bottom edge of the rear panel of the rack so it's fully supported when sat the right way up. I did store it upside-down by accident a few times meaning there was effectively nothing supporting the weight of the amp at the rear and this was fine, I never had any issues with it bending the frame of the rack or anything. I transported it regularly and never really took much notice of what way around the rack was when I was transporting it and I never had any issues not having the rear mounts. I'd very highly recommend the Boschma racks anyway regardless of them being a perfect fit for this amp. So basically IMHO, if you get a standard (non shallow) Boschma rack you wouldn't actually need the rear mounting ears.
Could it be you are looking at it from the wrong direction... some folks might say they want back what they paid for it, meaning they got it cheap and don't want to profit from it? Just a thought.
Indeed - you'd rarely see that phrase used when the seller paid top dollar (or more) in the first place...
