Are you sure it's an Orange 2x15 and not just an orange 2x15? Definitely sounds like a good price though!

Never needed a backup, and I only bring a backup if I'm playing a paid covers gig. I try to keep my gear to a minimum. I played a gig last Monday where the bass player from one of the bands was thrashing his bass around in one song then it stopped working. He asked if he could borrow a bass from one of the other bands... silence... ...then someone gave in and lent him his old backup bass - looked like a Peavey. He got his own bass working again though.
It is going to cost you £100 and a couple of days fiddling to find out if your plans will give you the sound you want. What you are suggesting isn't wrong it is just that there is no way of knowing what it will sound like.
Oh yeah definitely, I know this, I'm just after a bit more basic knowledge (thanks for that BTW). I wouldn't be doing it solely for the end result - 50% a nice looking usable mini rig, 50% just the hell of doing it

I was lucky enough to get a bargain Tanglewood 155 locally for £60 cos the previous owner was a bit careless and dropped it causing a crack to appear on the surface of the body. It's structurally sound and is really nice to play: I also owned one of the Takamine G Series basses, also sounded great, but not as smooth to play as the Tanglewood IMO.
Dubs, you cab looks exactly the kind of thing I could use for a jam night where no bass amp is provided & the PA/guitar amps are too precious to allow a bass to plug in. Any chance of stealing your dimensions / cutting list so I can have a go at making something similar?
Yeah sure, I don't have the dimensions I used written down anywhere still but I can take measurements and from that I'll know exactly what it was. I tuned it too low though by about 5-10hz I think so I'll PM you some amended dimensions - same size cab, slightly smaller port. That's just how I work - very rough and ready, little/basic science It's all trial and error. I also don't have the patience to build something really intricate like a BFM design. The cab sounds ok/good, but with a slightly higher tuned port it should sound a bit tighter. I'm actually considering building a matching 2x8 sealed vertical array cab to go on top of the 1x10. This should brighten up the whole sound and give loads more volume - easily enough to gig with.

I always bring earplugs with me to gigs. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I don't, but if I don't bring them then I definitely can't use them...
Exactly. So there's little point pairing a sealed cab with a ported cab because of the phase shifts and power handling issues low down - but if the sealed cab isn't doing the bass then that isn't a problem. And then you only need one 8". Ideas are good - but they're not always right first time!
What are the problems when pairing ported and sealed cabs? After reading this thread a few days ago I was half considering to make a sealed 2x8 vertical array cab with the Fane speakers to make a matching pair with my 1x10 ported cab that I made a few months ago.

Lemon oil. It's not very cheap but you don't need a lot - a little really does go a long way. It's brings grime and sweat straight out and leaves your bass with a nice glossy look and smelling of lemons!
Well I guess a diagonal array could be a good idea if you always play on hillsides facing in the same direction.
ok I get the idea...
-
With a diagonal array you end up with the sideways output on one side going up and on the other side going down.
Ah ok. So would you say that a vertical array is significantly better than a diagonal array?

This is a very interesting read. Sorry to hijack - just wondering what the implications/effects of aligning the drivers diagonally (rather than vertically) would be on the dispersion? Kind of like this:

Is there any Bass Conventions in scotland?
Dubs replied to Bass_Guardian's topic in General Discussion
I'm so sorry, I can't stop myself: Are there any bass conventions in Scotland? or Is there a bass convention in Scotland? I'm not usually a Grammar Nazi, I just can't stop myself on this one!! I'm sorry, as you were... -
I got some £1.50 velcro tape/strips from Wilkinsons. It's absolutely solid.

Impressive! Welcome to BassChat

You might be able to find a second hand Streamer Stage I for about that, maybe very slightly more...
-
Probably best to go with a BFM design then - sounds like you need something fairly serious. You could do a pretty good vertically stacked 2x12 cab design with fairly minimal know-how.
-
Think about what you want to use it for and what speaker configuration you want. That's the first thing you need to work out. If you're going DIY, then you may as well go totally DIY and make your own plans IMO.
It's got to the stage where I am looking to get some ear plugs impressioned as I no longer wish to use the better value (£20-£40) range due to the lack of clarity and comfort they provide.
Just wondering, what ones specifically is it that you use?

Have you thought about trying to use an EQ pedal?
