OK, glad thats cleared up. Apologies, but obviously I read an implied demand as such from your posts. Re-reading them objectively shows this not to be the case. *blush*
Ok mate, no worries
That's cool, I wasn't trying to imply that my experience was the same as yours, just that I didn't think it reasonable to ask that the wording of the site should be changed for my benefit. The fact that browsing at work is allowed for you doesn't change that you are asking everyone else to submit to a form of extra policing of the forum for your benefit. I think people may be getting a little worked up that a few alternatives have been given, namely the orrible lofi version or the turning off of avatars (which would seem ideal) but you seem to not want to consider these, or at least not comment on them. I think they are a reasonable compromise. Unless you can give a reason why they are unsuitable for you then there is the danger of appearing selfish and the responses will increasingly become variations on the lines of "tough titty" *insert shrug here*
I can't see where I've asked once for extra policies to be put into place or for anyone to change their current behaviour on the board for my personal benefit...? I've raised the topic for discussion and asked people to post their opinions on such images as well as clarification of the forum policy with regards to said images, bearing in mind their already stated policy that posts deemed to be sexist may be deleted. The alternative browsing solutions suggested are ok but not ideal for the reasons that have been outlined previously in the thread, ie it's great to be able to identify users from their avatar etc...

Some replies have missed the point a bit, but thanks for the input anyway. I wasn't trying to start an argument or provoke emotive responses, just a discussion about what people consider to be appropriate or inappropriate for a music forum. I get the impression that the majority are cool with it though? I know some people find it difficult to grasp, but my job does involve waiting around for processes to finish, during which time it's considered acceptable to take a break, read a book/paper or just browse the net - my boss and I even send each other links to stuff. When you're paying me you can tell me not to browse Bass Chat whilst at work, otherwise I can't see how the opinion that I shouldn't browse the internet at work anyway is at all relivant. The content I browse, however, may be becoming inappropriate...
That's the point - it's not possible to define. The above link gives a rough approximation, hence each image is judged on it's own merits. I will try and develop some examples of what isn't allowed, the research i'm sure will be laborious and uninteresting, but that's the price I pay for being a mod .
Haha true, and it's a heavy price at that. I've carried out my own thorough research but the results were inconclusive, hope you have better luck
I believe the best solution is for any obvious NSFW images to be reported to a moderator. By that I mean under the definition of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_safe_for_work (this would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis as it is hard to define a proper ruleset). Ultimately though, the forum is not responsible for 'safe browsing' at work.
I know it's difficult to define NSFW, but can you give us some forum guidelines? That article didn't really define it or give examples. It might seem like I'm being facetious but I'm just trying to establish the boundaries.
fancy selling her??!
I would have been interested but i've just got my custom bass project going again - body will be getting routed soon... (started it about 2 years ago!)

I bought a maple Mighty Mite Jazz neck from an ebay seller in the states, cost about 75 quid shipped in total - all import fees included. This was about 18 months ago though. Took a long time to come but looks like a great neck, however, i'm actually yet to fit it
It's your choice to go on a site when you should be working (I occasionally do it too so just an observation, not a criticism) so equally it should be a question of choice for which avatar an individual selects.
I agree with the points you've made and think it's only right that users have free choice over their personal avatar, but I already avoid certain forums and sites during the day for this exact reason. I'd hate BC to become another. IMO, posting such images is a really easy and tacky way to ruin a great forum.

So anything goes so long as there's no nips?
I've not noticed any that are particularly NSFW so I feel I'm missing out!
amongst others... Nothing to really cause much offence, but plenty to give the wrong idea with a glancing look.
I think it is a shame, though, as some people's avatars are worth seeing, and it helps to identify posters quickly when scrolling down the page...
That's why it would be a shame to have to resort to the lofi site or turn avatars off. I'm not trying to be a dick about this, but apart from the inconvenience, I think it's hypocritical to moderate sexist posts and state that sexist topics should be avoided, then allow people to post topless pics as their avatar... Can I post a frame of a Jenna Jameson XXX movie as my avatar, or is that taking it too far? Where's the line?
Wait, so your boss doesn't mind if you're not working in the first place? Truckstop
50/50 - depends on what's going on day to day, hour to hour etc. There are elements of the job that leave me hanging around for 5 or 10 minutes whilst I wait for files to copy and videos to render, so we either take a coffee break or browse the net. I'm at work now (I tend to smash out four 12 hour days and have 3 days off over the weekend)...
I have had to switch off avatars on my forum settings for this reason. I'd suggest anyone worried about this issue does the same.
Well that's the point really - should we have to be worried about this on a music forum? There are other forums that I avoid during office hours because I know the content is all over the place and essentially un-modified, but should I have to worry about this with BC?!

I like looking at scantily clad beautiful women as much as the next guy, but a few avatars have recently had me frantically scurrying for the mouse to scroll down the page incase my boss happens to look over my shoulder and get an eyeful of boobs or ass. Just raising the question; what's appropriate and what's not? Afterall, this is a music forum... EDIT: Spelling

Struggling to see the USP over myspace et al. Having said that, it looks like you've got some good ideas. Seems like usability is key for this though.

The way I tend to remember stuff is a bit weird. I kind of remember the 'journey' that my fingers take around the fretboard and the shapes they make, kind of like dot to dot but not just blocks of frets - I visualise geometric shapes on the fretboard that I follow from fret to fret for specific riffs and for passing/flowing lines I just remember the 'journey' that my fingers take. Each part of the song has a different shape or journey. It's weird, I know, but it works for me. I do it naturally and didn't realise I was doing it until I was having a conversation with another musician about remembering music and really thinking about how I remembered stuff. An unrelated method - having a good ear and understanding of the fretboard is also key as you can hear where you're next note is in your head before you place your finger on the fret.

You'd have to be [s]bass[/s] mad to spend £3k on such a cheesy a number plate.

A good song to go through for this technique is Emit Remmus by the Red Hot Chili Peppers - makes it a bit more musical rather than monotonous exercises.
