1.
Hey Ive been playing around with the setup on my basses! Now everybody wants their bass to play as effortlessly as possible right?? Trouble is lately ive found that with a low action the dynamics of my playing can be somewhat limited, i have to restrict my self too much and if i dig in too hard it just sounds bad!! So i gave the truss rod a small tweak anti clockwise then raised the action a bit and although at first its harder to play, i think it will make me a better player in the end and everything will sound much cleaner. Has anyone else found that higher action can improve your sound? Any thoughts or comments either way on this would be interesting cheers
I find that I can dig in and get nicer tones from a medium(ish) action and it seems more fun to play when it’s not too low, but I can generally play faster and more accurately when the action is as low as is physically possible for my bass, so it’s generally a toss up between tone and playability for me. I understand exactly what you mean though.
  2.
There is if you don't know what a tube compressor sounds like. What makes a tube compressor different from a non-tube option?
In all honesty, I don’t genuinely know I could throw in some clichés about the tube giving the sound “warmth” and a “vintage tone”, but I’d just be making it up. 3. This has recently become surplus to requirements so it’s up for sale at the very reasonable price of £40 posted including an adapter. Looks like this: Sounds like a tube compressor…not a lot more to say. £40, but trades also considered.
  4. damn, I would have probably had a punt on this.
  5. Do you know who manufactures these drivers? Got a model number so I can investigate some technical info? I’m specifically interested in the frequency response (especially the low end response) and sensitivity.

    I'm off to NZ.

    Best of luck mate.
  7. Met up with Nick to drop off my (now his ) UL310 to him. Great communication all the way through and a top guy to deal with – definitely would deal with Nick again. Hope you’re enjoying the cab mate
  8. I've heard of used MM Stingrays going for £500 recently...

  11. I’m based in Portsmouth. I’m 24. I’m a competent player with good gear. I’m not a tool. I don’t want to have to drive for more than 20/25mins at the absolute most to get to practice sessions (driving home for an hour at 11pm midweek isn’t fun anymore). I’ll consider a lot of things at the moment. Anyone?
  12.
for what you paid it was a steal. Always fancied one and if i hadn't had my shuttle would have probably bid on it. Lucky for you i didn't
yeah, I have been lucky with this. I put a bid of £300 (which was my entire budget) on it with about 10 seconds to go, but I was amazed that no one else took a punt on it. I’ve had a few other eBay things f*** up on me over the last year so I guess this is a bit of karma
  13.
I suspect using a tube to drive the power amp is more complicated than using it to buffer the input - higher voltages involved etc. Presumably the internal speakers are 4 ohms which is the amp's minimum load so you get full power with them - if you connected an extension cab in parallel the amp wouldn't like it. If it's generally loud enough on its own then this approach makes sense but if you're likely to regularly use an extension it's not so good. Horses for courses. Alex
Interesting stuff. The internal speakers are 4ohm (says the manual – it even came with the manual!). I doubt I’m likely to ever regularly use it with an extension speaker, but it’s interesting to know this kind of stuff.
  14.
It must be really hard to use the pedals up there. Do you have a small ladder that you stand on? S.P.
yeah there’s a small stepladder just to the left of my bass that can’t be seen in the pic…
  15.
Great combo. Was very well reviewed ages back but then forgotten about. They use the tube to drive the power amp rather than buffer the input, like some of the Mesa designs. Try turning it on its side to help your bandmates hear it properly on smaller stages. Alex
Cheers for the tip. I’m not actually currently involved with anything that is likely to ever make it to a live environment though Soon I hope to be doing more live stuff again so I’ll give it a go – it looks like it’s going to be very stable upright on its side, and it’s also got the wedge shaped back as well so it’d be great to monitor my sound. The way they’ve used the tube is great – I can’t understand why more manufacturers don’t do something similar if it yields results like this. The 2 speaker outputs are also quite interesting; the “A” serial output and then the “B” output that switches off the internal speakers so you can use it as a standalone head. Do you know why they’ve made the “A” output a serial output rather than a more standard parallel? I can’t see that it makes much sense to reduce the potential output by adding the resistance of another cab in series. Am I being a bit short sighted?
  16. Added some pics and comments to the “Show us your rig!” thread. I’m really impressed with this thing.
  17. Here’s my new setup: It’s a Hughes & Kettner Quantum QC-421, and it sounds amazing. If I didn’t know any better then I’d say it was a full valve amp. It’s clear and transparent and has a majorly impressive low end for such a compact combo. The richness of the harmonic layers produced by the “Tube Growl” are absolutely fantastic. Cranking up the Tube Growl isn’t like overdriving a tube pre amp - what the Tube Growl does is very cleverly add tube characteristics to the overall sound such as adding layers of harmonics to the fundamental frequency of the note that your bass is playing, as well as a subtle bit of natural tube compression. The effect is very striking and brings the sound of the whole amp alive. I was anxious about how heavy it is but it’s been well designed with relatively light ply wood and neo speakers, and the result is a very manageable 29kg, and it’s even more manageable due to the large solid handles that are recessed into the sides of the amp. Overall I’m really please with this combo and I think it’s the perfect step down from what I was using before (Epifani/Genz Benz).
  18.
I posted it to mistahbenn and that was the last I heard of it!
Cheers for the heads up. He’s probably just forgotten about it…
  19.
I dont think they really care as britain is a blot on the landscape compared to the american and japanese markets, besides kids seem to get a lot more spent on them over in the states so flea will probably make a lot of money.
Too true.
  20.
Has this gone on ebay then?
I guess the silence is confirmation...?
  21. Sold pending the usual. Sorry to everyone who was interested but didn’t have the cash together in time (there were a few of you). Cheers guys, and best of luck with the hunt for another…
  22. Looks sexy, but also pretty knackered. There's been better examples on eBay recently...I wouldn't say no though.
  23.
As Dood says - you have to read the manual and UNDERSTAND how the kit works before you start using it.
I didn't, and I haven't...oops.
  24. It’s being delivered on Friday morning – I’m away for the weekend but I’ll put some pics up here and in the “show us your rig” thread and tell you guys what I think of it after I get back…
