Sounds like you are doubting me.... Ernie Ball I think they were called: At my local music shop. (02) 6282-3199 www.bettermusic.com.au I am more than happy to refund you the cost of a phone call to OZ
It was a genuine question mate. I thought you were talking US$. I don’t have a clue how much they should cost, but I’m not sure I give enough of a rat’s arse to investigate the price any further anyway…

Hey man, I don’t know a lot about flatwound strings, but I was wondering what ones cost $100+?

wattage for valve heads- whats good enough?
Get the same power you'd get with a solid-state head. With the same speakers the output ought to be the same, unless something is broken somewhere. Personally I'd be after 300W if I was intending to gig it.
With a good 300W valve head you won’t get the master volume above about 2 or 3 until you’re playing 750+ capacity venues. When I gigged my SVT-CL the few times that I did I only had the master volume on 3 in a 300 capacity venue and I didn’t have any bass through the monitors because the volume from the backline was insane. For some reason you seem to get more volume with valve heads; that’s my experience anyway. -

IME of valve heads, 50W wouldn’t be enough for a lot of gigs, and 300W is excessive for a lot of gigs. Personally I wouldn’t bother with anything smaller than 100W, and I wouldn’t feel the need for anything more than 200W. Hope that helps, but there are others here with a lot more experience of valve amps than me so I’m sure you’ll get some sound advice. -

They were about £600 new and would be lucky to fetch £350 used at the moment. Whoever sold the bass to this guy obviously saw him coming from a mile away if he's just looking to make his money back...almost feel sorry for him.
I wonder if the free DVD that comes with it is as good as his 'adventures in spontaneous jamming and techniques' one? What a totally pointless waste of £15 that was.
Was that the “how to spontaneously blow smoke up your own arse whilst high” DVD? As an educational tool it’s about as much use as a banker with a fast-track teaching qualification, but for a laugh it’s alright

I think it looks like a toy, and that’s a bit of a joke @ £500. I thought the ethos behind this was that kids of all backgrounds should be able to learn a musical instrument so he was going to introduce an affordable instrument that kids would love and play and be proud of and blah blah blah… I quote – “I WANTED STUDENTS TO HAVE AN INSTRUMENT THEY COULD FALL IN LOVE WITH, AND I WANTED THEM TO BE ABLE TO DO IT WITH THE LIMITED MEANS THAT MOST OF THEM HAVE FOR ACQUIRING ONE”. £500 seems like a lot to me for an “affordable” instrument for people of "limited means"… I don’t know if it’s because I’m feeling a bit pessimistic today, but this seems like bullshit to me.
Sounds very familiar ;-) Kill two birds with one stone: spend some money on a fretless, and put your other bass(es) under the bed. I did that after my band split due to musical similarities and it's been really therapeutic.
Thanks for the advice definitely sounds like something to potentially reignite the spark. I did have a cheap fretless for a little while but I didn’t like the feel of it. I’ll seriously consider getting a better quality fretless when the sale of my Sterling has been completed.
I disagree. I don't think that everyone has virtuosity in them. All the best sportsmen for example have great 'natural' talent as well as having put all the hard work in. All you can say for sure is that if you put 10,000 hours in on an instrument you will probably be better at it afterwards, but then again, with that amount of playing you'll probably have RSI .....
+1 Definitely agree with that.

I’ve almost given up on bass. Feel very uninspired to play at the moment. I like to waste money on bass related stuff to make me think I’m a bass player at the moment though 10,000 hours is a f***ing long time. That’s 5 hours a day, every day, for almost 6 years! I could do that, I just don’t want to
As to why someone bigged up the price - They obviously DIDN'T want to buy it and may well own a Thumb bass themselves and would rather see similar basses going for more money there-by increasing the perceived value of their bass!
obviously they're a twat

I think there’s a case to argue that some instruments are amazing value for money, such as the new Squire basses, and that these basses can sound and play as well as their USA counterparts on which they are based (no pun intended), but I’d also say that you pay for what you get – a £200 bass will generally be cheaply mass produced in an Asian factory using cheaper cuts of wood and budget components. The £800/£900 USA Fender version will generally be made from nicer cuts of better quality wood, have much higher/better quality components, be assembled by a more skilled workforce (so we’re told), and be supplied in a case that would cost you over £100 at retail anyway. It’s arguable that they might play and feel the same, but you’re buying the snob factor of the USA Fender. It boils down to the buyer’s prerogative – “you pays your money, you takes your choice”. A £2000 instrument can be hand made by a skilled luthier to your custom specification and made from amazingly beautiful cuts of finely selected woods and using high quality preamps and components/hardware. If you can afford it, then why not? If you can’t afford it then there are fantastic instruments out there for a 10th of the price. Everyone’s catered for in the market place – you can buy brand new instruments for under £100 – it’s not like there’s a budget that’s not catered for – if you don’t have much money then you can buy a mass produced budget bass, and if you do have a lot of money then you can commission a build for whatever your heart and mind desires. Personally I’m likely to always buy up to the maximum that my budget can afford – why not? On the other hand, I’m unlikely to spend over £500 on anything “new” and would much rather buy expensive gear at used prices because you get so much more for you money – some poor bastard has already paid the retail premium
The guy I play with..... Craig Blundell.... he's rock solid.... though he does throw this lil trick in now and then to try and trip me up which is that he can play two different time signatures at once..... he'll be playing like a straight four then chuck a 6/8 over the top.... or he'll take the 4/4 up 15/20 bpm over the original tempo for a bar and then drop back into the groove..... git!
I played in a band a when I was 18 with a great drummer who used to do this to me as well – It was just simple things that really threw me like playing the snare on the 1 and 3 for a 4/4 beat, or playing a 4/4 beat in triplets but putting the snare on the 2 beat of the triplets (if that makes sense?) – really f***ed me up, he thought it was really funny

I once quit a band cos the drummer was so sh*t. I guess you set your own standards…

I almost hit the BIN last night at £750, bit pissed off that I didn't. The only reason that I didn't is because I've not got the cash from selling another bass yet and £750 would have completely wiped me out, and it would have also been quite a gamble as I’d be banking on my other deal going through quick without any issues. I'm not impressed that the guy has published my email address on the eBay listing though, guess it's my fault...
