Just worked out that I could buy a router and 7 or 8 clamps for under £50, and then sell the lot when I'm done for about £30...
-
It just looks like the end of the fretboard (past the nut) is painted silver – I know it’s probably not this, but that’s how it looks in the pics. Doesn’t look like a reflection to me.
Make a template, clamp it down, go to town on it
I was thinking it wouldn't be too hard to do it, but then I wouldnt want to f*** it up (which I might and will definitely regret a lot).
£170????? You could buy yourself a fairly good router and do the cuts yourself, leaving yourself a hundred odd quid. You probably have a hundred reasons why you can't do it but 'lack of ability' shouldn't be one of them. Just a thought....
You know what, I was seriously considering this. It would work out to be quite economical to buy a 2nd hand router, spend a few weeks learning how to route on scrap wood, then actually doing the routing I need to get done, then selling the router at the end of it. It’s a last resort if I can’t get a reasonable quote.
Not sure as I have never asked him, was it one of them that quoted you that then?
The £170 quote was direct from the man himself.
He also does repair work for Guitar Village Farnham and Kingfisher in Fleet. The two local music shops.
Does he charge them £170 for routing?

Aria STB GT4 4 String Active Bass Guitar Flamed Blue
Dubs replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
I think Kev got a 5 string version - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-STB-GT5-5-Strin...%3A1|240%3A1318 - think it might have been this one. -
Planet Waves = Very Good Plastic Straplocks = Bad – BUT…Metal Dunlop Straplocks = Very Good I use ones similar to this : Don’t buy plastic straplocks cos you might cry when they snap and the resulting fall of your bass snaps the neck

Bump - I'm still looking for someone to do this work. I'm likely to be travelling to London a few times in the near future so can anyone recommend someone around Harrow or central London? – I’m gonna email Bill Puplett (from the “Recommended Luthiers” list) but can anyone recommend anyone else?
But then we could say that about lots of posts "google it" theres lots of members posting for advice which is what the board provides, last week a bit of £100+ bit of kit was sold for £10 more + p&p than it would have brand new, how can that be right if we are here to help each other? Are we here to help fellow bassists acheive the best from this great hobby or to help sellers achieve the greatest profit from fellow members? Its just a thought! Eddy
As a buyer or seller on an internet forum or auction site you should know how to protect yourself. I'd have thought that doing 5 mins background research on pretty much anything you buy or sell online was just common sense? As a buyer, if you need to be protected from spending too much money on overpriced gear then you've either got too much money or not enough common sense. It's the seller's prerogative to advertise what they're selling at whatever price they want. It's the buyer’s prerogative to buy or not to buy, or to negotiate on the price. I don’t think it’s fair on a seller to discuss pricing in their thread. If you’re really bothered by it then send a friendly PM. I can understand what you’re saying, but if people need protecting from high prices then they need protecting from themselves.

I don't know a lot about this type of thing, but thinking about it logically I'd go - Bass > TU2 > UniBass > Exciter > Punch Factory > Amp

I think this guy does a much better job of using piccolo strings on a bass, and even though the tuning range is all over the place I think it might actually comply with the "it's not a bass" crew - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TF4sJHBIYEo I think this video is great, and he gets some proper grooves going. EDIT - This is another good example of a piccolo bass being played like a bass - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9nKLkIJlBoc

Looks interesting. I don't have a clule about Fenders but I'm keeping an eye on this thread cos it'll be interesting to find out what this is. What are the reasons that it could not be the JV00001?
No Luddism here but I'd say Fender VI is a bass guitar because of the range of its tuning just like my Precision is a bass guitar because of its tuning. What makes something 'bass' is not what you play on it or how you play it or its scale length or how it looks but the range of its tuning. If your 7-string guitarist tunes down enough then he's bass guitar player. That's why tuning up to, say, A or B is then called baritone and not bass and why some people use contrabass for an instrument tuned right down to B or F# or even lower. Mind you, people can and will do whatever they want and call it what they want, I'm not bothered. However, if the advert asked for a bass player you may well not get the gig if you're not playing in the bass register.
I think you’ve got a non argument there – you’re effectively saying that if he had a 7/8/9/whatever string bass with the highest 4 strings tuned to his piccolo tuning and the rest tuned a lot lower, then that would be ok and he would be considered by you to be playing a “Bass” even if he didn’t use the lower strings but because the range potential is there it’s a “Bass”? Doesn’t really make a lot of sense. I see what you’re saying about the literal meaning of a “Bass” Guitar, but I don’t think you’re argument works. Maybe he’s invented the “Alto Bass Guitar”? or even the “Soprano Bass Guitar”? – I’m not sure what sort of range he’s covering. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I think the guy plays some nice stuff but it’s not really ground breaking or actually even that original. It’s a good idea/concept to put piccolo strings on a bass though and see what sounds can be made, but what he’s doing with it has been done to the death in the past with classical guitars. I think the sound is too limited and what you can do with that sound is too limited; look at all his other videos – it’s like a Muzak Greatest Hits or something. I think he’s in danger of wearing out his reverb. It's great if you like that sort of thing but I couldn't listen to it that often. However, I think his technique is great and I’d love to have that skill and musicality. I’m knocking the style, not the musician. He gets a pat on the back from me for thinking outside the box and trying something a bit unorthodox with the strings. He must be doing something right to get us all talking about him. Not a bass? My arse. Ask Zon what instrument he’s playing. Since when did the name of the instrument change with the gage/type of the strings that were put on it?

I play well, I’ll turn up when I say I will, and I’m not a complete tool. Well, 2 out of 3 aint bad… I'm desperate to get back in a good gigging band after 6 months of little musical action. I play with good gear and I'll have my own transport available at evenings and weekends. I’m happy playing a lot of different styles and types of music, but I’m not looking to do anything too heavy live (such as any Hardcore or Metal). I’d feel right at home playing something with a groove or some rock stuff, and I’d definitely consider a functions/covers band for paid gigs. I’m based in Southsea/Portsmouth. Drop me a PM.

I have my bass strap at a comfortable height (just above my waist), but I have my guitar strap low (below my waist) but that’s cos it doesn’t matter/I don't care if I f*** up on guitar
Laugh at them.
It's a pretty unrealistic quote, and the guy was being vague with a timescale, not to mention that I'd have a 2 hour round trip to drop the stuff off and then another 2 hour round trip to pick it up again. For that sort of money I'd want a lot more than just a bit of routing being done. I'll see if PJ's can help me out tomorrow.

I just got quoted £170 from someone...
Its a fair point, and I should say becuase I live at Kings Cross I don't have a car, so bringing the mesa would involve lugging it and a bass through 1000's of people. it is doable. Part 2 of this would be to rely on the same setup for gigs. I always jsut use whatevers there anyway, the pa seemed a better option for consistancy.
Ah yeah, I suppose that’s a different situation than what I had in mind – a 10 minute stroll through leafy suburbia is a world away from Kings Cross at pretty much any time of the day Can you store your rig at the practise rooms? If you normally go through the PA for gigs then I’d guess that the EBS microbass would be a great solution for a versatile pre amp in a pedal form. I can't offer much advice on these though, but I've heard they're great.

I’m going through the same process at the moment, but from a Line 6 Pod XT Live. I’ve already got a separate pedalboard built up with 5 fuzz/overdrive pedals (yes, I really do need that many ), a synth/auto wah/envelope filter type pedal, a phaser, a compressor, and I need to get a tuner. Basically I’ve got 2 effect solutions at the moment cos I’m trying to put off selling the Pod. I’ve used the Pod for 3 years and it’s been great for me but it’s just not versatile enough and I find it can be a bit too big/bulky for what it actually is. If it was smaller then I’d have it on a pedalboard with a few other effects cos I think some of the things it does are great. I don’t want to put all my eggs in 1 basket to find that the Pod was actually my perfect solution. Basically what I’m saying is “don’t rush into it”. Try and have a crossover period where you have the option of both the Boss GT6-B and another pedalboard made up from a few separate units. I think doing this will help you work out what you need from your effects, cos it’s helping me realise what I need at the moment. Hope that helps.

I'd just bring the Mesa; there's nothing like practising with the rig that you're gonna be using live – IME there’s no substitute for practising with your gigging rig because you can get your sound perfect and there’s gonna be so supprises live. I'm not a fan of just going through the PA though. If you don't like to compromise on quality, then don't; bring the Mesa. How easy is it to load/unload into the practice space? Personally I'd not consider the PA as an option, but if the reason you don't want to bring your Mesa is because it's a pain in the arse to move around, then maybe assess the practicality of it? Ever thought of going Neo? EDIT – I just read that back and it might sound like I’m ranting , but I’m not – it’s genuinely meant as constructive advice/food for thought
