Yep, all that talk of sustain and clarity... bogus, what it's really about is that moment when you're at home had a nice warm bath, drying off with a towel round your waist and you pick of the bass for a tiny bit of practice... Ye Gods that bolt-on plate is cold! And poly finishes are pretty icy too. Neck-thru instruments were clearly developed with the naked player in mind. A square of cold metal to the abdomen kills the whole warm and fuzzy vibe (man)...
I never thought about it that way before, but now it all seems so clearly obvious
It's where the wood is split down the middle and opened out (like a book) so that the grain pattern on each side is like a mirror image. Here's a nice example:
Ahh, I thought it meant something like that (kind of makes sense when you think about it), but just wanted to make sure. Thanks

I’ve got a thick slab of cheap ply and 4 casters in each corner. Must have cost me at least a fiver to put together…

a bit OT, but what does bookmatched mean?
I think I was the one who put the EMG's and Aguilar into that SS1....so here's my interpretation. The EMG vs MEC isn't a biggie. EMGs (to me) sound just a bit cleaner, with more extended highs and lows but essentially not very different in character to the original MECs. I already had a P p/up doing nothing, so it seemed like a good idea (I've always liked the clarity of EMGs) The stock 3 band preamp started to play up, and rather than spend time and money fixing it, I decided to change it. Never liked the mid control, and felt it was pretty "hissy". The Aguilar 2 band was chosen because it has a frightening bass boost, and also the ability to cut treble (very useful with EMGs if you want a more traditional sound). I also prefer vol/vol to balance controls, unless they are really well designed and don't do odd "phase things". Despite all that, I couldn't get the warmth out of I wanted....so off it went.... BB
Ahh fantastic – it’s great being able to trace back the history of stuff. Were you the owner from new? It’s still in amazing condition – when I got it off Luke the only blemish/ding/scratch/or anything is still the classic thumb ware above the P pickup, and this is only minor. It feels great and sounds amazing to me and is so comfortable to play, but I do prefer 1 volume + blend
all i can assume is that both Flea & River Phoenix had been at the marching powder.
+1 This is quite an old video from the early 90's though, and was just pressed to DVD in 2000. Some of it's quite funny and a bit interesting, but I wouldn't take it as a serious bass DVD.
So, Ben. Having lusted after a Warwick Streamer Stage 1 for many years, I gotta ask a seasoned Streamer; Thru neck or Bolt? EMG's or MEC? I guess the main reason for me liking your SS1 is the pick-up config. I just think it looks better than the jazz (from a man with a jazz config! ) Not a huge fan of the $$ either. Pick-ups matter!
Hey man, I don’t know if I can be a lot of help, but I’ll try - Well, I honestly like both thru neck and bolt-on, but on different instruments – I owned a bolt-on Thumb (as mentioned above) and I loved it; really great sound and was a lot lighter than the thru neck equivalent. I’ve played a few thru neck Thumbs, and although they look/feel/sound great, I just don’t think that I’d have the back strength to play a whole set with one It may sound odd, but I don’t feel that I can really comment a lot on thru neck Streamers vs bolt-on Streamers. The only bolt-on Streamer that I’ve ever owned is the Std, and this isn’t really typical of Streamers - for a start it’s passive, and the body shape is completely different to the higher end Streamers; it’s not contoured around the edges and doesn’t have the arched body construction, but despite this it feels great to play and has a lovely passive interpretation of the distinctive Warwick sound, IMO of course. The Streamer Pro M is a great bolt-on Streamer, but I’ve never owned one so I can’t really give much advice on that vs a SSI or SSII, but it’s a lot closer to an SSI than the Std that I own. The second hand prices for Warwicks are quite low at the moment so you might actually be able to pick up a thru neck SSI for not a lot more than a bolt-on Streamer Pro M, but In terms of extended sustain on thru neck basses and all that crap, you won’t be able to tell the difference. Also look into the Streamer LX – I think that comes in a P/J pickup config on the 4 string version, and is also a great bass. With the thru vs BO thing, I think it's just down to finding the right instrument for you, so just try and play as many as possible to get a real feel for the differences in tone and feel/playability. My SSI has an Aguilar OB2 pre and obviously the EMGs, but all this was in it when I traded it for a Stingray so I never actually heard it with the original pre and the MECs, but it sounds completely different to the SSII, although this is probably to do with the nature of the instrument. The SSI sounds really crisp, and although it still sounds distinctively like a Warwick, I think somehow it sounds a bit more Hi-Fi than some other SSIs that I’ve played in the past (probably due to the pickups and pre amp). The SSII has a lovely dirty growl and compliments the relative cleanness of the SSI really nicely, but I don’t know if that growlyness is due to the original pickups and pre amp or just the natural acoustic properties of the instrument, who knows? Hope that’s helped a bit, but if not then Warwickhunt is the messiah of all things “W” around here so it may be worthwhile dropping him a PM…
Min 8k and make sure they stage it!!
Wow! good work if you can get it I suppose – I’d deffo do it for 8k, and I’d probably do it for as little as 4k, but that’s only because I wouldn’t be leaving a wife and kids over Christmas.

It’s looking great man – such an improvement on the green!
I'm an electronics tech trained on all things thermionic, from basic audio amps to whole radar systems. I like valves! But compared to a good solid state amp (all considerations of tone aside), they are inefficient and unreliable, and there is, quite literally, no way to change that. If you must have 'that' tone, fine. But expect to a) pay, and keep on paying. No-one who regularly gigs a valve amp should expect to revalve it less often than once a year. In practice, they do last longer if looked after, but that's what you HAVE to plan for. The amp tech's mantra here, for a 100W Marshall, is a fiver a gig at two gigs a month, or one gig a month for a 50Watter. In terms of reliability and cost, solid state is having your cake and eating it. It cannot ever be that way for tubes. But they do sound good!
I guess having an amp with a decent solid state power section and a great tube pre is a reasonable sacrifice with all things considered. That's the way I've gone anyway, and it weighs sh*t all!! (Shuttle 6.0 – Class D solid state)

Ibanez fretless six string - gone for £132
Dubs replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
yeah that looks like a great price, but how many people can utilise a fretless 6 string? I wouldn't know where to start – It might have actually made more if it were a 4 string fretted… -
I don't mind paying a small voluntary subscription for a few extra perks, like a bigger PM inbox and the ability to pin my For Sale ads to the top of that forum.
The problem with that is that everyone will do it, so it will develop a situation where there are 70 or 80 + pinned threads… Maybe allow it to be pinned for the first 24 hours after posting it as an alternative but fair compromise and quite a good perk for those who effectively pay to use the site? I’ve got no idea how that would work though. I agree with what you’re saying about a few extra perks for contributors, and I’d also be happy to pay an annual contribution if it meant that we didn’t have to have corporate sponsorship or adds all over the place.
It's not just a temperature thing, letting them cool down. The heater filaments are MUCH more fragile while still hot, and more prone to just breaking. Any physical shock while still hot risks this. It's why car bulbs are made so tough. And expensive. Or projector lamps. Very fragile when hot!
Ah, yeah I did hear this, but conveniently let myself forget all the advice I’d been given about valves once I sold my valve head… Good advice though.

I’ve just bitten the bullet and ordered a Mighty Mite 2909 from the states – works out to be near as makes no difference £70 delivered to my door if I don’t get hit on the old import duty, if I do then it may be as much as £84, we’ll see…
I have to say I find this a right pain. When I'm on tour I very rarely get to let my VBA 400 "cool down" for 10 mins. Most times we have to be in a massive rush to get our gear off so the next band can play or if we're headlining, bloody venue staff , bouncers or (and this is the worst) club night promoters telling us repeadly to get out. I usually have to get into it's flight case and out back into the van as fast as possible. Also our practice/storage room is right freezing this time of year. Am I right in think all of this could lead to a premature death for my valves?
If you’re putting it into its flightcase before it’s exposed to the elements then it should be fine, I’d guess so anyway as the flightcase will keep the warmth in for a while and will shelter it from the cold, if you get me… As for the practise room situation, I have no idea. I’d guess that it’s fine to have it in a cold room, but the problems are with the glass valves suddenly expanding or contracting, but mostly contracting – i.e. going from a hot stage environment straight out of the back door of a venue to be taken to the van that’s parked 20m down the road and it’s a lovely -5C January night – the hot valves will contract suddenly when they’re hit by the freezing cold air and could possibly smash/blow etc…
That's a ridiculous price. Why not buy this http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31416&hl= and sell the body and electrics on Ebay - you'd probably get 150 quid for them from the guy who paid £121 for a 'slight seconds' neck.
That's actually not a bad idea, although I'd have to sand off the decals on the headstock as I need it to be blank...
