1. I’d agree with Al, if you use octaves a lot I’d go with an analogue and a digital on your board. That way for dirty analogue stuff you’re good to go and also have a digital option where you need a vice like grip on things. Or even simpler higher register stuff on the analogue and lower on the digital. This also makes sense for me because the fatness of the analogue stuff better serves higher register notes and the digital processing sometimes keeps the bottom notes and real low subs from getting too wild. Just depends what works for you. I often go thru a COG which then goes into Fuzz and then all that goes through a pitch factor to add upper octaves on top of that. There’s no set rules, but I find having analogue and digital octaves give plenty options.
2. The Matrix GT1000 is indeed tasty bass amp when paired with a nice pre. Ive used it with a Vulcan XL and a meatsmoke pre for a lightweight option. That said the Matamp GT200 with its heeefingly big C core transformer makes the lows lower, the highs higher and generally everything better and clearer than anything I’ve owned. That includes SVTs, boogie walkabouts, carbines, bigblock, 400+, AD200, Aggie750, swrs, Genz. so Matamp probably not classed as lightweight. I can carry it however so Im considering it portable...
3. if you like the rat tone, the COG rats are very bass friendly. new one due out . I have a mini tk421 which has all the snarl and all the bass you'd want. A Rat on the bass is a specific thing and sounds so good when dialled in. Clean blends can be tricky for that reason, as you change the amp volume, you sometimes have to adjust the blend. I would stay away from the Prunes and Custard as its a totally different beast, almost envelope filter distortion in a synthy way. unless thats what you want. Lots of Bass distortions/ RAT clones available with blends now but some honesty don't need them. Yes Darkglass have blends but also not the Mids you are looking for. The Pike Vulcan XL should. Dr Scientist Frazz dazzler and elements both have blends and bass tone pots to dial in what you need. very versatile for the bass. I also like the Dwarfcraft Eau clare thunder for a mid heavy bass fuzz. The Necromancer also has a full EQ section. So does the Thorpy Muffroom Cloud. All great on Bass. Don't forget the Tronographic Rusty Box, played on recently and they are fantastic too.
4. You'd think, but he seems to just want one per person. He's set up that way so I guess thats best for him. It was 10 I asked for initially and that was too much. A few Fmerons, polytope etc. I dropped the quantity and still not interested. I'm not going to second guess his method, ill just deal with other companies who want to have their pedals available for you guys to try. I guess in this instance you guys will just have to go direct. I'm still on the search for other goodies...
5. Ok so after a quick chat with Taylor at Iron Ether he is not interested in having a UK dealer or any type of bulk order submitted. Even from the point of saving on shipping he doesn’t want to deal with quantity. I understand he wants to sell direct but I thought at least from an environmental point of view having me bring in a few of his range at the same time would make sense. Either way he’s not into it and you would have to go directly and each import your own. Building by himself I suspect a new run of Fmerons may not be soon but I’m trying to find out when. If I can get hold of one I’ll make it available. This is frustrating but not uncommon with smaller builders.
6. Hello yes. Leave it with me gents, I’ll see what I can do!
7. I’d definitely add the Pike Vulcan XL to the list. It will give the grit you need for that sort of JJ / Chelsea Dagger tone because you can push the mids and still add bottom end. In the same way the Lomenzo and Sheehan drive let you push the mids but it still has more of an old school tone to it. It also stays pretty focused but not in the dry darkglass djent way.
8. Here are 2 awesome dirt pedals for sale... Both are £100 each including shipping Knightfall Now sold. RAT/KNIGHTFALL Now SOLD Knightfall 66. SOLD Designed, tweaked, changed, changed back, tweaked some more, one more change and finally released - the Knightfall 66 has been a long time coming. Capable of providing fat cleans, old school mid-heavy growl, all the way through to high gain overdrive, the Knightfall 66 is the drive pedal you need on your bass pedalboard. Two separate Gain controls can be switched with the A/B footswitch, and each Gain control also has a Level control to allow balancing between the two drive settings. The Voice knob adjusts pre-gain low end providing additional control over the shape of the overdrive, and the Tone control cuts high end after the clipping circuit giving a broad sweep from dark through to very bright. The clean channel is filtered in a similar way to the Grand Tarkin's clean channel and designed to properly blend with the drive channel - rather than sounding "side-by-side", the two channels integrate for a more natural tone. The Knightfall 66 can be powered up to 18v for increased headroom and dynamic feel. * A/B footswitch gives different Gain settings without losing balance of levels * Filtered clean blend allows extensive sound shaping in conjunction with Gain, Voice and Tone * 2.1mm Boss-style 9v-18v DC input (power supply not included) * North-mounted jacks to reduce pedalboard footprint * True Bypass * Die-cast Aluminium box 2 in 1 RAT "TK421x" and Knightfall Bass OD (custom build) SOLD Armed with the standard Knightfall MOSFET clipping, the 66 circuit is there for cleanish and warm grit through to medium-high gain tones and general awesomeness. The brand new TK-421-X Bass Distortion, due for release very soon alongside its baby brother the TK-421, is a slightly different beast and should only be used to get a cleanish tone if you turn the Level and Blend knobs all the way down. The distortion element of the circuit, as with the TK-421, takes inspiration from the fantastic ProCo Rat, with improvements made to reduce noise and to sit better with the bass guitar. The LPF-1 control rolls off treble from the clean-blended signal to enable the user to add anything from a full-range clean signal all the way through to a heavily filtered one and everything in between. The LPF-2 control rolls off treble from the distortion element, with the range of this control adjustable by an external toggle to allow either a 'traditional' setting, Cog-standard bass guitar setting, and a third setting with much heavier filtering for deep and dark bass tones. Symmetrical LED clipping as standard, the TK-421-X also provides options for asymmetrical LED clipping and both symmetrical and assymetrical silicon clipping, all via an external 3-way toggle switch. 9. Definite +1 on the QStrip. It’s the best thing tech 21 have made in my opinion. I very good little box with great sound quality. Different to your usual EQ box. Also it doesn’t have to cost you 330 because you have a basschat discount!
10. Great that he can now get that elusive 70s tone now that he’s officially retired from sabbath. Get the DOOM tone by writing DOOM on the amp.
11. They do. Elements is nice too. Just spent more time with the Frazz tonight.
12. Ok so I’m going to stick my neck out and say the Dr Scientist Frazz Dazzler should be on the list for an amazing Bass Fuzz. After playing one tonight at volume I’m still of that opinion. Here’s why. 1. It has a Bass/mid/treble control. Now, Muff lovers with a bass have two options, set the tone control for a huge fat bassy tone but lose the top end, or vice versa. With this EQ you can have bass and top end, scooped or middy. 2. It has a mix control so you still have a clean blend option. i Didn’t even need to use it. Also running octave subs through it was not problem and didn’t kill low end. 3. There’s two gain stages, one can be switched in which is a higher gain with a gate. Stay with me.... There’s also a voltage starve control so for those of us who like a synth bass fuzz this gets the spitty, splutterry stuff done and the compressed gate fuzz for long synth notes. I should I’m talking about the version 2 model. There are some YouTube clips of the version 1 on bass but they are pretty terrible. If I can get time to do a demo I will but just wanted to throw it out there. It’s very good. Well done Dr Scientist.
13. On the Tech 21 front I’d definitely give the Qstrip a try because the channel strip EQ is phenomenal. Also because I don’t think sansamps warm your tone. I think they do valve gritty but not valve warm.
14. I'm working on a simple valve preamp DI with Verellen. Just the clean channel from the meatsmoke (which is really good). small enough to fit on a board to connect bass and pedals to then send feeds to PA/Power amp. Don't know when it will be ready at this stage but hope to have a few available.
15. GlouGlou do make killer stuff. Yes it’s expensive but it does a lot, it’s not just a filter, and the tone is really good. Actually it’s very very good. You’d need to hear it in the flesh. Given a meatball was around 300 pounds over 15 years ago the GlouGlou stuff these days is possibly comparable but it’s also a lot better/does more. Not everyone needs one obviously but I’d guess anyone with one on their board will be a happy man/lady.
16. I guess the fact each channel on the EBS has an effects loop you can stick a comp in the clean side set how you like.
17. I used to run 2 VTbass racks in parallel with a CA6 for a similar thing to stop the bottom end going mushy. Also a VT bass rack and an RPM which worked better. To be fair a Geddy pre does this in a simpler easier platform. The saturation control on the "bass" channel is really good for fattening it up. Anyone curious to try a ged can get a basschat discount. Just let me know.
18. I agree. so I've dropped the price again.
19. Depends what you want from the trem. nice and subtle or choppy as hell? Tap Tempo? ones that do a lot are the chase bliss and dwarfcraft twin stags. the chase bliss also does harmonic trem, so does the EQD night wire. EQD also have the hummingbird for real chopped up trem stutters. the supro also should be a nice one. fulltone and Thorpy does a nice sounding trem but there are loads out there really. I find for bass the subtle or harmonic trems are less suited, I tend to go more for the rhythmic chop.
20.
And as if the GAS wasn't enough, I've just seen this over on Talkbass: https://youtu.be/3wZHFlIEn84 The Dedalo Byte! Made in Argentina.
well reminded, I had Dedalo on my list and totally forgot. Must chase one up.
21. theres one here if you want to try it. use your bass chat discount "10basschat" I would definitely try first. its different to a lot of other octaves.
