Love it when Muse do chat shows etc and asked to mine, they have taken to swapping instruments and totally taking the piss out of the fact they are being made to mime........
Yup, Muse jumped straight to mind for me too, I can't seem to find it but a mate once showed my Muse on top of the pops when matt was just waving his hands around the keyboard at one point.

Well I have a general preference for less extreme distortion, so I guess i'm biased in saying ease it off on the the guitar, with a cut on the high end as mentioned earlier, at the moment it kind of reminds me of the guitar in the power rangers theme tune Other than that, sounds cool, i'll agree with turning the rhythm section up in comparison.

Why not ask your teacher/ a vet DBer to have a play on it and see what they say? You don't necessarily need to get it all done too, if your fingerboard is reasonable they can leave that alone, and my action and soundpost adjustments were £60 and £40 respectively. The action obviously made a big difference to playability, as when i first got it the action was so high i could fit my hand underneath, so after the setup it felt much less like i was fighting it, and practicing/playing became much more fun. edit: should mention my bass is a s/h gear4music job, which my teacher came to look at with me, and he immediately said it'll play great after the action's lowered. Also, lowering the action requires adjustments to both the nut and bridge, if guess if you're confident you can do it yourself, just make sure to keep the curve the same whilst you do it to keep the gap between the bottom of the string and the fingerboard the same (my apologies if i just stated the obvious).
Tell me about it. We did a gig last week, and I reckon that out of about 200 people there, I must have been the only person who didn't manage to trip over my bass (that includes the singer also). One girl said "you shouldn't leave on the floor, you should stand it up somewhere"
vital double bass accessory?

Deleting posts and provenance of equipment sold on BC
ZMech replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
I've had a similar thought, where i've noticed sometimes people often remove the asking price from the listing once it's sold, which can be a nuisance if you'll looking for a price comparison for an ongoing sale. -
The originals band playing pubs experiment
ZMech replied to Low End Bee's topic in General Discussion
Have you suggested to the landlord (the tough one) that he comes down and checks out your gig at the other place? At least that way he can get a feel for the music/atmosphere/turnout, without having to go to the risk of putting you on himself. It's a slightly slower solution, but might help. -
Yup, I also frequently do the same on wikipedia, have ended up learning about some very random topics. The last thread started withlooking up an album, and ended with a pub that's inside a tree (complete with dartboard).

If you feel like moving beyond root notes, the 3rd and 7th are the next best. 5th is also good, but doesn't really add as much character (or so a jazzer advised me).
A few things amaze me about London, its cheaper to fly from Glasgow than commute from airport to London,Burger Kings are open at Kings X at 5am....discovered after waking with a hangover and needed a coke, getting from tube line to another is actually an Olympic sport,if you run out of essentials at 3am,ie-tabs,coke,bread,dildo,s....you can purchase them in SohoCarnaby St looks nothing like in the Austin Powers films.Next time ive vowed to stay sober and actually explore London,id never been before and basically blew a good weekend.
A few things about non-londoners amaze me. Their inability to cross a busy road, and how they always seem to quickly fall behind when trying to follow me through a crowd Should add as a general rule that seems to be more applicable in london than elsewhere, cabs are damn expensive, it's always worth checking for bus/tube alternatives.

What kind of genre is the band? If it's anything remotely funky just put a big strong note on the 1 of each bar and all is fine.
Why don't we ALL just leave our bands? Right now. A national bassists' strike. That'll show 'em. B*st*rds. ( )
All that would mean is the rhythm guitarists would swap to bass, and still play it like a rhythm guitar, would be a mess. on second thoughts, maybe that would make them appreciate us more if/when we returned!

Have you tried playing through them in multiple ways, e.g. up four notes at a time. So in C that'd be C D E F, D E F G, E F G A, F G A B, G A B C, and then back down again. Other things can be go up the scale in third, so C E, D F, E G etc. and then do that for different interval gaps in each mode. Then if that's not enough variations, you can do it across one two three or four strings, and if it's double bass/fretless with different fingerings. Still not riveting stuff, but at least gives some change from just standard scales. Edit: just remembered another one i've been trying, which is to stick on a jazz standard e.g. Misty, and try to play the arpeggio of each chord in time with it. Sounded fairly easy but is suprisingly hard.

Well one of my mates was playing around with some egyptian scale he'd got off the internet, which was pretty cool. So I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of wierd alternative scales that would be fun to learn. Any links would be appreciated
I seem to recall lessons in the early sections that are initially feature a bunch of enharmonic notes on the same string, then similar but with "joining the strings together". OP, is this what you are referring to? Jennifer
Yeah those were the ones I had just played when I wrote the OP. I still pushed through anyway in the week that I wrote that, and now at the II position it's seeming to be more harmonic lines.
Best to start work on these with a teacher present. As you say you have difficulty telling whether you are in tune, then you are still really feeling your way around the instrument. A decent teacher will put a lot of these seemingly random exercises into focus for you.
The one I meant which I think was 'exercies for the connection of the four strings' seemed to have long sequences without even an open string. So my issue was after half a dozen only fretted notes, I found it hard to still tell what in tune sounded like, especially when it was using minor 7th jumps which isn't an interval i'm that used to. Anyway, in the week since i've written that OP I've carried on, and it's now seeming to make more sense, but thanks for the advice and ecounragement.

yup, i know the feeling. Have had it for a while. notice my member status title thingy. Also found myself about to say '+1' in real life recently.

Well, due to multiple people recomending it, i've got myself a copy of simandl part I. However, I can't see how bowing seemingly random notes is meant to help. Due to the exercises being so disjointed, and not even in costant key, i'm having difficulty telling whether my notes are in tune or not, so I can't really see how it's meant to help. Of course this may partly be due to having a slightly untrained ear, but I would've expected a book for beginners to be done in such a way to help that. Does anyone have any advice? not sure if i'm just missing something here, and at the moment it currently just feels like an unproductive chore.
Finally, if your bass is set up with a really high action and you are tuning at the 5th fret (for example) you may be pulling the bass out of tune simply by fretting the note - which will in turn mean that when you release the string, the 'open string' note will be out of tune in comparison.
isn't adjusting the intonation by moving the bridge meant to compensate for this extra tensioning when fretting?

that was pretty awesome. Think i'm gonna have to try this whole 'singing first' lark, see if it works for me
compared to some of the stuff that's on this thread they're practically brand new - probably got another 30-40 years in them yet who's gonna be the first to use the phrase "I've got strings older than you"??
Yup, this thread has made me feel much better about not changing them There've already been strings mentioned that're older than me, considering i'm only 21.
I'd have to spend at least 15k +
Spent £500 on my db, and whilst i'm aware she's not beautiful, she sings sweetly enough that I'm happy. Have discovered why people on here mention you'll never be without a gig on DB last night. Went down to an open mic night, and almost every of the singers/guitarists I chatted to were immediately interested as soon as I said i play double bass seems for the first time i'll have a choice of bands! well, at least until they realise I'm not very good yet.
everything else feels a bit like playing with toys.
Yup that's pretty much how i feel when i pick the electric back up. Although it does make it feel extremely easy to play by comparison.
I love to play both electric and DB. They offer different musical gratification and I can't do without either.
Yeah I can understand that, BG is definitely more suited to things that need that stronger simpler sound e.g. funk. Saying that, I think most bands I join from now on will be on the DB (at least that's the plan).
