1. i've been playing two months, never live, and i've already found this to be true. Talking to a violinist, mentioned I'm learning double bass, was an instant success.
2. indeed it does sound like a nice example of huge BS. i guess it might make an effect if you have your own super smooth generator which it's directly plugged into, otherwise the normal copper wires that have brought the current all the way from the power station is probably the weak link.
3. wow, seems my worries were somewhat unfounded then. I'll admit i haven't yet tried to fit it in a car, this was more of a pre-emptive thing. Getting 3 in a corsa sounds especially impressive. the only problem i find carrying on my back it is that the back of my legs smack against it with every step, i've considered trying to find a soft case with the straps attached lower down the bass.
4. Hey all Well i've being playing double bass for a couple of months now, and have kind of avoided the question of what i'm going to do if i have to take my DB further than i can carry it. So I was wondering what you guys do for long distance stuff. I definitely can't fit it in the back of a hatchback, which is what all of my student mates have, and i'm not sure how many saloons would fit one either. I thought i'd ponder this question before I actually have to try and do it, so there's no hurry. So, any ideas? p.s. I think i understand the appeal of an EUB now.
5.
i think a lot of people would recognise the white rabbit bassline, its been used quite a lot (sopranos, alice in wonderland, fear and loathing in las vegas)
I think there may be a generation gap involved here. I don't think most of my friends have listened to jefforson airplane, and I only have as my mum's a fan. I think i'd agree with something more like Billy Jean/Brown Eyed Girl.
6. Small question to add to this. I get that it's better to pull from the shoulder than from pressure on the thumb, but i can't work out how to apply a counter force forwards to stop it essentially getting pushed over (isn't newtons 3rd law a pain) without using my thumb. I hope that made sense. Edit: I should possibly mention i'm using an acoustic.
7. Hey all Thought I'd put my starter bass up for sale, due to needing some funds. It's a great bass, which I played for a few years until i saved up for my spector. It's one of these jobs http://www.gak.co.uk/en/rockbass-streamer-...red-stain/24046, will let you read the technical stuff on there. I'm looking for £150 w/ the gator case it's currently stored in. I'd rather it be picked up (north london), but delivery can be sorted if need be. It was only lightly gigged, with no major injuries. Of course, i'm happy to answer any questions. Zach
8. Well I'm gonna be putting up my rockbass for sale in the next few days. It's one of these jobs http://www.gak.co.uk/en/rockbass-streamer-...red-stain/24046 Was a great starter bass, and kept me happy for a good few years, until i saved up enough for my spector. I'd be looking at around £150 which includes a hardcase. Am in north london, send me a PM if you're interested.
9. damn, if you'd put this up a few weeks ago when i was looking for my first DB, i would've had it off you in a second. unfortunately (mostly for you ) a guy nearby was selling an acoustic, so i've now got a nice big monster to shlep around. good luck with the sale though, hope it finds a good home.
10. very stupidly just took me a couple of seconds to work out why that bass looked familiar. If that's the one i had a quick play on on saturday, then i can say it definitely made me have a 'phwoaaar' moment, was a great sound. good luck with the sale.
11. can i second the previous question. will it start sounding like a mess if i start subbing in chords on bass whilst the others are playing a standard progression?
12. The Jungle Book! probably the film of my childhood. Some absolutely brilliant tunes on there. Second to Blues Brothers, but we all know that already
13. have now got myself a nice upright thanks to gumtree. now for the long the possibly painful journey of learning to play the monster!
14. At a minimum, being able to read a chord sheet helps (especially with jazz). I got very annoyed when jamming with a guitarist, who made up a chord sequence, but wasn't able to tell me what the chords were. conversation went something like: me: nice sequence, what're the chords? guitard: __ fret on __ string, then __fret on __ string etc [translate to notes in head as i don't think in fret numbers] me:ok, and are they major or minor? guitard: blank look [At this point I leave the room] Edit: at the same time, at a jam night last week, the trumpeter got annoyed that I didn't notice the b5 on one of the chords. won't be doing that one again.
15. sounds like it's time to go get my coat...
16.
McCartney's Hofners (there were two of them) have got to be the most famous basses in the world, easily beating the Funk Machine and the Bass of Doom because he's so much better known than Jamerson or Pastorius. Half a million easily, probably more.
well i'd be extremely suprised if it went for more than hendrix's guitar. considering how many people would say 'what? mccarney played bass?' I'd be shocked if it's worth over £100k
17. Due to agreeing with the examples that multi double bass can be awesome (not a fan of multi bass guitar), could people please put some examples up.
18. put simply, he's a wee bit mental. Quite want to find some of his 'normal' band work, see what he's like in a traditional role.
19. A yes to me, assuming my first lesson goes well on saturday. Of course this has the bonues that none of you would have to worry about being the worst player there Am in bristol, although wouldn't mind hitching a ride with another BCer, or going home to london for a weekend.
20. thought i'd add my endorsement. Got a 4-string equivilant, and i absolutely love it, even after having a day out at the bass gallery. good luck with the sale, have a free bump on me.
21. cheers Rev, a few names i vagually recognise in there. Of course kind of blue is a favourite already. Time for some serious spotify action.
22. cheers for the votes of confidence, turns out the bassist was gcordez from on here, so have been discussing getting lessons from him, thankfully he lives nearby. will be popping into cremona house on thursday, will let you all know how it goes. Part of me wants to not like DB, due to the realisation that it's one of the most expensive and inconvenient instruments, thankfully the rest of me doesn't care about that! Have you got any recommendations for stuff with nice bits of DB to be listening to? Am also ignorant of most of the big names on upright, so some pointers for who to look at would also be cool.
23. well this is my first trip into the DB section! This madness has been brought on my having a quick play on someone's DB at a jam night recently (didn't ask if he was a BCer), and after admiring the acoustic sound for years, I now really want to play one. Thankfully this urge is coinciding with my 21st in december, so I think i'll be asking for the cost of rental and lessons as a present. My main worry at the moment is the sheer size if it, since i'm a not so towering 5' 8", and my hands aren't exactly huge. However, these days I can manage to stretch from 1st to 4th on my fretless, so hopefully that training will make things slightly less hard work. I'm a Bristol student, so any advice about good places to look for a rental/teacher would be appreciated. Who knows, one day i may even prefer it to electric...
24. could it be something in the room you're playing?
