I currently have my room arranged so that my bass amp and cab are in front of the window, which is south facing. This means they're in direct sunlight and so the cab (Ashdown superfly if it matters) gets quite hot. I was told that having my bass in the sun is bad due to the heat mucking about the wood, but should i have my amp in the shade as well?

Hey! I've revamped my bass gallery mini-site...
ZMech replied to wateroftyne's topic in Gear Gallery
Nice lil' site you have there. That's the first time I've heard a direct comparison of a rosewood and maple neck, so I now know what the hell it is that people are talking about! Needs sound clips of the last few basses, especially that walnut one. ^_^ -
Forum newbie looking for Bass buying advice...
ZMech replied to squarejawbassist's topic in Bass Guitars
Hey squarejaw. thought i'd go mad and actually recommend something in your price range not sure if it's what you want of course, but I got a spector rebop second hand from eBay for £400, which I absolutely love. Having said that, a quick google showed that new they're around the 1k mark. bloody hell. Following that, most definitely buy second hand, you get so much more bang for your buck! Edit: thought I might as well stick in a link to tempt you http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=22400 -
I think this has already been said, but i'll put in my contribution anyway. Whilst i'm by no means an expert (yet), my mate who's a musical freak on the piano recommended I do interval recognition training. By this I mean I'm now after a month or so getting to the point where in my head I can hear one note after another and know it's a minor third, after which i know its just a 3 fret gap to play what I heard. Whilst I haven't yet gotten it up to the speed that my mate has, since he's been doing it for about 10 years and can go up to a gap of 3 octaves or so, I can now work out a bassline I hear in my head much faster than I used to be able to, although not yet fast enough to play whilst I think. Is a second set of strings allowed? In that damp salty sea air, as well as it being hot therefore sweaty, any strings would go to s*** in no time!

Just got a pair of leads from max. Was very easy to deal with, with some speedy posting. He

Why not just do a search in the for sale section on here? I'm sure I've seen them pop up from time to time, and they'll probably be much less from a basschatter too!

Had lessons for the first year or so. Were pretty useful, as it started me off without any particular bad habits. However I reckon that once you get to a certain point, teaching yourself is a better option as it becomes more about putting in the hours practicing. theorywise I'm still learning from books and the interweb, and with technique i think it's just about slowly building up speed and dexterity.

headless - bauhaus movement
?
Unless I'm mistaked, the bauhaus movement can be summoned up with the statement of 'form follows function', which I think applies to headless basses, because although they do seem to look odd and have something missing, they do so to increase the balance and other aspects i.e. the form of the bass came second to the function when designing it.

headless - Bahaus movement. basses >£2000 - overkill. first hand no name brand jap crap - get some sense and buy a decent starter bass second hand!
Entirely agreed. But if, like me, you spend most of your life on the B and E strings (occasionally venturing forth onto that wild land known as the A), you don't mind sacrificing a bit of punch and zing from your D and G. And it would surprise me if anyone could tell the scale length from a recording -- the 35" is all about feel for me, not sound.
If you're aware you're not going to be using the G string, why not just get a 4 string tuned BEAD? would've thought that'd be more sensible, since as far as i'm aware it would just require filing down/getting a new nut.
Jeez, I wish someone would do a masters thesis on aspects of bass guitar construction. It would put a lot of conjecture and assumptions to bed.
I'll see if I can somehow make that the project for my mechanical engineering degree

whilst during term time i'm a bristolian, back during the summer i'll be home (at times) in london, so although I couldn't commit to anything serious I'd be up for a jam.

Have tested it using a mates lead, and it is indeed the jack not the wire that's doing it. Not quite sure how to tell one jack from another, but it's a spector rebop (the one in my pic) if that helps. I think either i'll open the cavity at the weekend, or i've asked for an estimate from a nearby guitar shop.

I've started noticing that if the just gets a slight pull in a certain direction then it makes a not very nice pop sound. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be, and whether it could be easily fixed? Cheers Z

That's just oozing funk! A fantasticly filthy bass tone too, I had one of those rare 'phwoooaaaar' moments.

Everytime I pick up my bass at home, the first thing I play is that awesome bit in The Chain, although I still think of it as the F1 theme. it's also the bassline I use when fiddling about with EQ settings.

Pretty good, shall definitely have a go at that. One thing I can't work out is what the numbers are over the notes, such as on line 39. My guess is it's some cello thing i'm unaware of.
