Now I was expecting to get the unprocessed Bass out set like this so that I could re-amp, but what I seem to get is Model on the left channel and unprocessed, but at a lower level, in the right channel. Model is hitting 0dB. Unprocessed is some way below this, though still clean
I would expect there to be a difference between the processed and unprocessed sound level - if the unprocessed is just that - a direct input from the bass, albeit being converted to digital by the POD. There is bound to be a difference between that and a signal that has been through amp modelling etc.
Yeh no problem, I really love that plug-in but sometimes I worry that I don't actually know anything and constantly spout bollocks, which is why I asked how you got on.
No worries - that plug in is brilliant, so no bollocks there. I know what you mean though - this is part of the latest demo I'm producing for my band. They seem really happy with the results, but I'm kinda feeling out of my depth with it (strange really cos I studied Music Technology at college so I do kind of know what I'm doing - a 4 song demo shouldn't be that taxing). I haven't done much recording over the last 5 years or so and I've kind of been chucked back in at the deep end, which is cool but I'm kinda second guessing myself on everything. I guess the important thing is to trust your ears - if it sounds right then it probably is!! (although now I'm thinking maybe I've got something wrong with my ears and it's going to sound sh*t to everone else) If you can't tell, I'm suffering from an extreme lack of confidence in my abilities at the moment.
Let me know how you get on, i'm interested!
Definitely an improvement - I'm still not 100% happy with the bass sound, but it sits nicely in the mix now. Thanks for the tip!!!
In cubase there's a great plug-in called "quadradrive" which is an overdrive, but used in the standard "blank" position is basically an excellent multi band compressor - try it out. Everytime I record something in too much of a rush or have made a mistake and can't go back to fix it, I use this plug-in, on guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.
I'll give this a go later - I've used this plug-in on drum tracks before and got excellent results, never thought to use it with bass though.

I think I'm going to get a DI of some sort - probably the Behringer BDI 21 and see if that helps at all.

Right here's the dilema - I am recording a demo with my band at the moment. Everything is sounding great except for my bass sound - I am super happy with my sound through my rig at rehearsal/gigs etc. especially since I fitted an east u-retro pre-amp to my bass, but the sound when recording direct to my pc (via half decent mixer/soundcard into cubase sx) is a little dissapointing to be honest. I have tried allsorts to try and get a decent sound but it always seems a little lacklustre. Any tips?

Anyone know a keys player in the Berks area?
lateralus462 replied to mushroom_jim's topic in Musicians Wanted
Hi, I'm looking for a keys/organ player for a new Soul/RnB covers band (playing Motown/Stax type of covers) based around Reading. Just wondered if any of you well-connected bass players out there might know anyone who would be interested. I've got most of a set list put together, and should have some gigs coming up soon as well, so if any of you do know someone they can contact me on and I can give them a lot more information. Bit of a long shot, but you never know what might come of it! Cheers, Jim
Have you trued advertising on the berkshire live forum? http://www.berkshirelive.co.uk/ thats where we found our keys player. -
Question on fitting East U-Retro
lateralus462 replied to lateralus462's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi Chris The grounding wire went to the bridge on my bass, any problems email me , I'll try and help the best I can. Kevin
Thanks Kevin -
Right my new Pre-Amp Turned up this morning (Thanks 6stringbassist) and I'm planning on fitting it tomorrow, but there are a couple of things I'm not completely sure of: This is the first question I have is this On the East website under the Installation guidelines it has this note: "IMPORTANT - Make sure all threaded bushes for the pots and toggles are solidly grounded via screening foil or other highly conductive material (although conductive paint is fine for screening it should not be used as a method for ground the pots and switches for the retro" So at the moment my bass has J bass style wiring in it with the ground going to the bridge - I take it I'm going to have to line the cavity with foil, but in that case wher would the ground wire on the circuit go to? (Sorry I'm finding the whole grounding thing slightly confusing) also what foil would be suitable? Any help would be greatly appreciated
I probably would use real hi hats and cymbals, especially the ride cymbal if they are important part of your groove, maybe just use two overheads or you can use spot microphones if you prefer. If you use just the close miked samples of the drums along with the cymbals and Hi hats microphones or over heads, you can use your own reverb, a good convolution reverb can imitate some great drum rooms, or a plate for a more processed sound. If possible I would record both audio and midi then pick the sounds most suitable. Try to stay away from big overproduced sounds as the can sound artificial in the mix. Using sampled drums can sound seamless and great if done with care, if your drummer uses a lot of articulations and drags it might be worth considering using a real snare. If you are new to recording I would try to keep things simple and just use midi with triggering Ez drumer. But if you have plenty of time experiment se witch works for you. Good Luck Post the results if you can
Thanks for the advice - I think we're going to try going for a purely midi approach to start with, but as we have as much time as we want we can mess around with things as much as we need to - I have done some test recordings using EZ Drummer and it sounds way better than we could of got with a real kit and the equipment we have. We're going to start recording on Monday (Just an acoustic tune to start with as the drummers on holiday) but I will post some clips over the next couple of weeks to show how it all progresses. We're planning on doing 4 songs at the moment b may record more depending on how they turn out (I am fairly confident that we'll get good results) - it would be good to get some different opinions of them though.
I'd go further than Tom and actually only record it MIDI - then run it through every conceivable drum sample and soft synth you have access to, just to find the best possible snare, kick, hats and toms.
I was kind of thinking that - I have EZ Drummer and pretty much all of the expansion packs so I'm sure I can find something that sounds decent.

I am about to start recording a new demo with my band, and instead of using mic's on the kit, we thought we might try using the drummers electronic drums. I'm a bit dubious about this, as I'm not sure of the quality of sounds that the kit will produce (it's a Yamaha DT Xtreme if that means anything to anyone) although I might try using the kit with EZ Drummer & DFH cos I know that sounds fantastic. has anyone had any experience of recording in this way and got decent results?

I'm not interested as I already have one very similar but nice guitar, and a very resonable price. Oh, and free bump
. Thanks Dude - Point taken and year added

Looks to me like a slightly funny shaped Jazz with a fugly ass headstock. Not my cup of tea at all.

Hi, I'm putting my trusty Line 6 POD V 2 up for sale - these things are tone monsters, and in my opinion you can't do much better for direct recording guitars. The Amp/Cabinet/FX models all sound great, plus it's not just for guitar - the tube Pre-Amp emulation on this is Ideal for recording bass or keyboards. Obviously this is not quite as feature packed as the newer POD's but still has plenty to keep you amused for hours. also Included is an FBV2 footswitch, which allows you to scroll through 4 different patches. Both the unit and footswitch are in great condition woth no scratches or anything (in fact I don't think these have ever left my house) I'm looking for £65.00 o.n.o

Band Practice cancelled again...............
lateralus462 replied to lateralus462's topic in General Discussion
It's not really one member, it's all of them, with the exception of the keyboard player who joined around the same time I did. It makes it kind of difficult, as they've been playing together for quite a long time, and we're kind of the new members. -
Seriously, don't compromise. If there are commitment issues now from one member, the same issues will still be there in six months. Move on.
I know this would probably the sensible thing to do, but I do want to hear what they have to say - I've not agreed to go back or anything, I've only agreed to let them buy me a beer (aren't I generous!!) -
Band Practice cancelled again...............
lateralus462 replied to lateralus462's topic in General Discussion
I've just had a barrage of emails from various different members of the band pleading with me not to quit. Have agreed to meet up with them for a beer to air my issues, but can't see that they'll all get resolved.
