Agree on this ,backline is each to their own but it is odd who detailed we get with it when its really just monitoring ,i have a good quality signal from my Sadowksy metro going to a high end DI BOX with eq etc (radial tonebone) going into a good pa where the main band man and sound guy gives me compression of a bit tweaking from the sound check .Always get compliments on the tone
-
Rarely use any of my live gear at home .Use a Eden 40w practice amp and any bass i fancy at home Easy to get extreme tones at low volumes messing around ,don't mess much live
-
He's made a career out of being rubbish in front of a camera. For a bloke with plenty musical knowledge his interview patter is terrible Rarely watch it,same bands doing the rounds album after album
-
I'm more passive but i have the option on my Sadowsky and find the knobs on a bass harder to judge and tweak than knobs on my amp sitting in front of my eyeline .Add a active Di box in the mix as well

Never looked at the real thing but i have a mechanics mat i cut in two to use between cabs and on the floor occasionally http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?gotonode=ViewProduct&method=mViewProduct&productid=10064&productdescription=eva&productcode=&category=6&catgroup=&catmicrogroup=&analysiscode=&requiredresults=16

I would try and copy their own stuff as close as poss and do your own thing on the covers .Like said often the Bass isn't even noticed to a point.i Dep a lot for one band and its nice when its noticed and complimented

Never weighed mine but its the heaviest bass i've ever played, big strap, big bloke ,all well
-
Likewise, apart from spotting Tal with Jeff beck i knew very little of them.A metro came up local and i went to see it and bought it.So i've played one ,mine and it sounds immense even passive .The first gig i used it the whole band mentioned the sound and i'm 2 bands on now and its always a talking point.Downside its a ton weight so the hollow NY ones would be ideal but i don't have £3500 .

Mixed bag pub cover stuff ,prepare to be ignored and its your job to grab them small own material gigs, punters should listen or go home what i've noticed particularly with the older "pay the mortgage" tours ,groups of lads go who haven't seen each other for years and talk all the way through stuff. one answer is to have a Pa with 10k per side

Does my pub band really need 4 PA speakers?
jazzmanb replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
?? Strange comparison ,a guitar is amplified ,see how loud it is on zero volume ,regardless of string hitting .You telling me a 8 stone drummer hitting a shallow kit won't be quieter than a 17 stone tree trunk armed drummer hitting deep toms ? -

i'm not saying some drummer just play flat out all the time but some drummers "loud" is louder than others .Its a natural thing . -

jazzmanb replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
Well how loud they play is how loud the play .Wouldn't expect someone to tell me to stop hitting the strings so hard or to hit harder -

We are a room shaking rock band with a 10k 4 speaker EV set up(just ticking over) They sit in front of the band and everyone goes through them, then your backline is purely that and shouldn't really bleed out front though the guitar amp is miked so it will no doubt travel. My bass rig is quite loud but its pretty much for my benefit only.We can get stage mix right down bu the drums limit how low you can go -
Job sharing for a covers band - any advice?
jazzmanb replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
I would make some enquiries and get someone interested then mention to the band If it's something you can manage without hassling the guy who sorts gigs money transport etc I'm sure they'll be cool with it -

I'm a official full time dep in a covers band .Get around 30 gigs of the 100 plus they do Would I like a few more ? Yeah .Would I want the lot ? No I enjoy it because I don't do it every weekend .I think it's coming to where they want me to take over and I have a mate in mind to share with me as a fill time job and gigs every weekend is too much -
Could you perform your current role on a Squier Bass ?
jazzmanb replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
Picked up a VM jazz for £180 few weeks back, nice loud sound ,no daft buzzing at high volumes.Put an Allparts neck on purely for looks and its doing 3 gigs this weekend while my Sadowsky metro sits it out Its 3tsb and its classic Zep stuff so the look fits fine -
Bars/ Pubs And The Inebriated Out Of Control Punters
jazzmanb replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
Main problem is playing to punters 5 foot in front of you with various trip hazards while they pogo or headbang -

Pubs are called "locals because they are at the end of streets usually.Drink driving still goes on but 90% of a busy bar are walking or taxi home -
As it says in the blog, not of use to everyone but a lot of kit isn't.Lets face it you can play all your life with a bass and amp so everything out there from that could be questioned i have a tonebone and love it

Musicianship vs Personality & Stage Appeal
jazzmanb replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
Pub cover band level i think its always been the same, there's a big bunch doing the rounds who are okay and get repeats but they have no wow factor or imagination regards stuff and look pretty dull.Anyone making a bit more effort, playing wise or lights or backdrop or material etc tend to stick out and get a bit of a reputation .Then there's the top tier who have it all and have a very healthy following for a reason. Most of us can watch a band and without being bitchy spot something they could do better very easily but they don't bother or are oblivious
