For those who are into this sort of thing, here are the resistors used in the GP12. -
NAD - and bit of a clean up diary - Trace AH600SMX
ianrendall replied to ianrendall's topic in Amps and Cabs
Having a break and gone to the pub for lunch. So far I have: Cleaned the fan and grill. Lubricated the spindle. Cleaned the heatsinks, PCBs, pots, sliders and general casing with a soft brush and vacuum cleaner. Cleaned the filthy UV, back panel, front panel, knobs and metalwork with a mild degreaser. Removed every single chrome jack surround and polished them. Removed the AH600SMX Perspex legend as the glue was brittle and cracking. Removed the glue, keyed surfaces with fine wire wool (just the non visible portions of the Perspex) and reglued. All of the screws that were removed I gave the once over with wire wool to remove surface corrosion. Dropped some electrolube in the sliders and pots. Vacuumed the carpet covering and inside of the case. Will need to shave the bobbles. Ordered a speakon to jack lead. Had a pint. -

I love working on stuff like this. It’s basically the same as the 4 stroke engine on my bike. Now, the UV bulb is in full working order, but quite grubby. What’s the best thing to clean it with? White vinegar? Glass cleaner? Meths? Angle grinder? -

Yes it’s heavy! The tools in my workshop are beginning to maintain orbit around it. -
Got this off a friend for the bargain price of £150 yesterday! I have yet to play through it as I want to check it over first as it’s been left in his van for a while. But it powers up and no funny noises. A couple of LEDs need resitting and the fan is filthy and will need some electro lube, but where’s the fun in buying an old amp that doesn’t need a little TLC and fettling?
-
Super, thanks! Out come the tools! And @lownote12 I’m still very much enjoying the bass. All those knobs and switches and I still use it almost always passively 🤪
-
Thank you, I’m very chuffed! Now then, I will obviously need to give it a test play through, which I will hope to do tomorrow. I only have speakon leads though. What I DO have is a mic lead jack to xlr - the Trace has xlr options for speaker connections. I unscrewed the jack end and it has connections to the tip and sleeve - the lead being mono, no ‘ring’ is present. Will this work?

Here’s the serial number. Can any clever types glean the year of manufacture from it?

And here it is! Needs a bit of a clean and I’ll have the bonnet open tomorrow to give it the once over, but at least the UV light works!

There's more than just bass cabs to argue about
ianrendall replied to Happy Jack's topic in Amps and Cabs
I’d still say class D rather than class A/B -
I have passive Barts (I think) on my Ibby that has active/passive switching. Is 2.5mm spacing a general guide for any passive pups or just the EMGs?

Couldn’t resist! -
I’ve recently decided to revisit Trace as they seem to be coming back into vogue, and I’ve heard so much about ‘that tone’. My very first amp was a Trace GP11 410 combo, but, the folly of youth meant that I didn’t fully appreciate how to get the best out of it. Smiley EQ and all that.. I feel that I’ve now matured enough as a player and have more understanding of the differences between class d and class a/b to do it right this time round. I’ll draw the line at Trace cabs though...for now..

If it was an actual bona fide motorcycle jacket with shoulder and elbow protection I’d be all over it like a tramp on chips.

Well, I showed the Mrs a picture of an AH600 and she has decreed that it must go in my workshop, along with my ‘massive’ BF Midget. I put my foot down of course, and relented. My Ibby bass stays in the house though.

Is the valve in the pre a 12AX7 as per?
-
Thanks for the answers chaps. I’m not sure a circuit diagram is actually necessary now I think about it. We have all the electrical testing equipment we need in my workshop, and any non-Trace specific duff components should have the part number stamped on in case I need to order from CPC.

I’m soon purchasing a Trace AH600SMX off a friend for the princely sum of £150. As far as I know it’s in full working order, apart from the DI which is apparently doing ‘funny’ things. I rarely use DI, maybe once a year at the ‘big’ gig under Concorde 002, but I’d still like to have it 100% I won’t know the full extent of the problems for a few days until I get it, but until then, I’d like to study a schematic or technical manual to get familiar. Where to get? I can find lots of pdf files for various models but not the AH600. I’m handy with a soldering iron and my father is a retired electronics engineer so it’s within my abilities to fix.
-
Very much so! I have a friend with an AH600SMX he’ll take £150 for. I can borrow it for a few months and see how I get on. Can this amp drive one 8ohm cab or does it have to be used in crossover mode at all times?

Just tried them. They had two identical GP7s, a 150 and a 300. Played through a jazz bass and an Ampeg 410 at 8ohms. The 150 seemed easily twice as loud as the 300, both settings set indentically. Odd. I’m wondering if the faceplates got mixed up by the shops tech guy..
