1.
That sounds great fun but also try the Paul Denman tone - it's good as well (see Sade live clip posted). I played for two years in a Cliff and the Shads tribute band using generally only a coral red 2 band Stingray - sounded great (much better than a Precision, which are generally too honky sounding against the Hank B guitar in a live setting - unless you can get tone off to sit in the mix - which implies full FOH and sound mixing capability - and even then it may be less than audible)
Funny you should mention Denman. I was just looking at the Sade vid a minute ago and thinking that's a great tone. Haven't heard the song since before I played bass, so never realised it was a 'Ray. I can listen to the whole album again with a new perspective.
2.
I removed the frets myself, carefully, but I let someone else finish it. I had sycamore veneers to fill the fret slots. I keep thinkinf about removing the black dots and insert something pale instead... but that's a lot of cash for a "cheap bass", and it's purely cosmetic...
That's quite a striking look with the light and dark contrast. It's almost 'graphic novel' in appearance.
3.
Aaaah, right so Ted.
Currently doing a week run of 'Oliver' with a Bernard Edwards tone!
4. There's a cracking version on Pee Wee's MySpace page.
5. Not REALLY sure why I started this thread. It was a kind of portmanteau of several classic threads of the past few weeks.
6. I've heard tales of folk filing down the frets until just the metal tang remains within the slot, flush with the fretboard surface, then applying several coats of a suitable varnish. Can't remember where I heard this or how successful it was though.
7. ...if you walked into a bass dealership after selling your Rickenbacker and found an £11,000 Fodera propped up against and amp (with a smiley face EQ) next to a music stand?
8.
'Nard ?
The late Bernard Edwards, he of Chic fame.
9. Another good 'in' if you are a reader is the amateur dramatics route. Pantos, musicals and stuff. Usually two or three pro players in the pit who are well connected to The Matrix of the local music scene. Just remember to bring your own music stand *ducks* a pencil and a battery powered stand light. Theatre gigs have been my only source of paid musical income for 20 years and it's a right old laugh.
10.
That's ok, I've re read my post and feel that the tone came across as a bit arrogant - so sorry if it did. I was hoping that there are some demo videos where the bass player plays with a plectrum and doesn't just play four bars of dunk, dunk, dunk before defining a new epoch in bass playing with his or her fingerstyle / slap chops. I'll have to keep watching Does Homour belong in Music..LOL
It's fine 😊 I think I misread it also. Let's hug.
11. Love my Stingray. Finally got the 'Nard tone nailed. Took me 15 years and three different 'Rays to realise that it's all in the fingers!
12.
It's brand new
+1
13. Dead spots. My current Singray is a bit dead at the 6th and 7th frets, which is fine because if I go any higher than the 5th, I get dizzy from lack of oxygen.
14.
Which bass demos show a bass played with slap and plectrums...? Slap and its many forms I accept is overdoene, but plectrum. Could you show me?
No I can't because my claim was unsubstantiated in the heat of the moment in order to add weight to my argument and have a cheap dig at pick players because I can neither slap nor use a pick properly and am just envious. 😎
15.
There's a fifth fret??
It's at the dusty end of the neck.
16.
There's a twelfth fret??
Rumour has it there could be as many as 24. I still think they are meant as spares for the first five frets.
17.
And also that it's necessary to play a dozen notes a second. I'd prefer to hear some sustained, fingerstyle notes so you can actually get some bearing on what the bass actually sounds like... I suppose really a better demonstration would be to record the bass being played in a band situation so you could get an idea of it in concert.
That and the protracted chordplay and tapping beyond the 12 fret.
18. Slightly off topic here, but what really grinds my gears with many online comparisons is the demonstrators belief that bass players only slap and play with plectrums...
19. Have you tried Strings and Things? www.stringsandthings.co.uk
20. This utter bullshize. http://youtu.be/t1TcDHrkQYg
21. Be polite and complimentary. Even if you don't mean it. Don't show off. Just get in, do the job, and don't drink (much).
22. Good point well made. I stand corrected said the man in the orthopaedic shoe.
23. A girl approached me at a gig once and asked what the big black box was behind me, meaning my old Trace 410 combo. I explained it was the amplifier and speaker where the sound comes from. "Oh" said she "I thought the sound came out of them black things" as she pointed to the pickups.
24. I have the two wheeled one also and it's fantastic. It also doubles as a combo stand as I discovered at rehearsal last night. The hard floor in the big hall makes the amp very boomy and unfocused when flat on the concrete, so much so that I was considering a new combo. But now, my Stingray sounds like a Stingray. 25. Great video. Should be noted that there is a great chunk of foam under the strings too. May be tempted to convert to flats when I next change my strings in about 3 years! How do flats affect neck tension vs same gauge rounds? Am I right in remembering that TI flats are fairly gentle on the neck and fairly loose?
