1. Hi Guys........great responses, thanks for taking the time. Nice to see so many players enjoying their short scale basses even though we're in a minority. When I went back to my SG, it truly was like the return of the prodigal, I've learnt my lesson and promised I shall never stray from her again, it MUST be true love! Just out of interest,.......one modification I made last year...Hipshot "Supertone" bridge, no drilling or major work needed, just drops right on top of the original three point bridge fittings, but really improves tuning, intonation and sustain. I also prefer the through body, glued in neck option too! AND ONE QUESTION PLEASE I have a Gibson hard case but please does. anyone know where I can get a good quality gig bag for the short scale SG bass (SKB semi-hard gig case or similar) They all seem to be either long scale or poor quality or can't accomodate the "two a side" tuner configuration; any suggestions greatly appreciated!!
2. So, selling my brand new precision 5 string; here's the story. After years playing short scale Gibsons I recently took a brief foray in to 4 & 5 string long scale territory. Thinking it was what I wanted, I bought this Precision.........expensive mistake!! Nothing wrong with the bass, it's a fantastic instrument and the sunburst finish is truly superb; trouble is, I just can't get on with the 5 string thing and I keep returning to my short scale Gibson. So, For Sale is an AS NEW American USA Precision 5 string, one month old, absolutely flawless mint condition. Comes in a SKB semi-hard case as pictured, fitted with D'Addario Chrome flatwound strings. Collection or I'm prepared to travel a reasonable distance to deliver. Carriage could be arranged, probably be around £30 I guess but, can confirm that if and when.
3.
I'm playing an SG Reissue bass and love it. The output is a bit low so I'm playing it through a BD-2 Blues Driver and it's perfect for old rock/blues covers. I switched to bass around 6 months ago, got myself in a band and we've got our first gig in a couple of weeks.
Good Luck !!
4. If that's what he wants to do, fine. If his band are happy with that, again, fine. I just feel sorry that this guy will not be progressing or improving his playing or identifying notes around the fretboard and will end up being handicapped (musically) if he wants to sit in with other musicians. If he's not bothered, then fair do's.
5. After years playing a Gibson SG bass, I recently dabbled in the long scale, 5 string option. I was so convinced that this was the way for me to go, I bought an American Standard PrecisionV (5 string), but having rehearsed and gigged it with the band numerous times, I keep returning to my beloved SG and I've decided to stay with that. Thing is, most posts seem to be about long scale 4/5 string branded/boutique basses so my question is, are there many SG / short scale fans out there and if so, what's your story?? PS., as new Fender American PrecisionV (sunburst) for sale
6. David Swift.......(Jools Holland R&B Orchestra) 4string, 5string, acoustic/stand up bass and a fantastic reader and musician; also a very nice bloke!!
7. Some interesting posts, thank you! It's not a case of "throwing toys out of the pram", more just two personalities that clash and a change in musical direction. Having looked at the posts and having had 24hrs to cool off, I've decided to walk and see what else crops up! Thanks all for your input although any more comments gratefully received!! PS, just wondered, is there a forum out there somewhere where drummers are haranguing bass players?
8.
I use interparcel/UPS all the time and have never had any problems with anything getting lost or damaged.
+1 Interparcel/UPS are excellent; never had a problem. As regards packaging, I just ring one or two of my local(ish) music stores and can usually blag a cardboard box that would have been destined for the re-cycling bin.
9. Hi, Although I play bass for fun, I've been making a living playing pubs, clubs, hotels etc. for the last 35 years (solo acoustic guitar) and the attendances have certainly dropped in the last few years. I think the smoking ban has had the most effect, but that's something I applaud as three years ago, I was treated for throat cancer, probably as a result of working in smokey atmospheres and I wouldn't wish that on anyone!! The cost of drinks, big screen football, cheap curry's and booze available from supermarkets, the latest films available on cable TV have made staying in the new "going out" and all this has contributed to a declining appetite for live music. Licensees have to make a crust, so they open longer hours and as a result I have found my playing times set back to accommodate these late night revellers, most of whom are pissed up by that time anyway!! Ooh for the old days
10.
The most over-rated band in history
Fortunately or unfortunately, whichever you choose, (I'm 62 now), I was there in the 60's and glad I was. Thankfully, The Beatles (amongst others) were responsible for so many, many young kids taking up music, everyone wanted a guitar and to be "a Beatle"!! Even if their musicianship was questionable, and I don't think it was, their songwriting talent was overwhelming; they've got nothing to prove, the history books will tell the story!!
11. Yeah, sorry about that, bloody trackpad froze on the laptop so I hit it three times and it must of registered three times
12. Hi, Early last year, I was quite happily playing a sort of semi-acoustic mix of covers and original tunes as a three piece (two guitars and occasional drummer or self recorded drum track). One guitar left for other projects, drummer couldn't really "cut the mustard" so departed, so that left us working as a duo (acoustic or with occasional drum track). Since then the we've been joined by another guitar and drummer, and here's the problem..........the drummer and I just do not get on, both musically and personally, and I don't think we will. As this has also resulted in the musical direction moving away from the original project I have decided to walk away.....so, has this ever happened to you??

16. Hi, Selling my Yamaha BB1024X....un-played after moving to 5 string; mint condition, like new; no belt rash, dents or dings, 34"scale length; gig bag only, no hard case. Looking for offers around £600. For more details enter link below, or ring Brian on 07852 190 333 http://uk.yamaha.com...24x/?mode=model
17.
A twat of old bastards.
That's a bit harsh!! What about....A Mode of bassists
18.
The most over-rated band in history Very influential etc but I have never actually listened to 90% of their stuff. Not hostile, just never went there.
If you "just never went there" how can you possibly judge them one of the most over rated bands in history!! You had to be there to appreciate the overwhelming effect they had on the music scene in the sixties; so many great artistes, musicians and orchestras have covered (and I admit, sometimes destroyed) there work. Listen to the words of some of the less popular tracks (In My Life - Rubber Soul....a true classic). The Beatles have nothing to prove, they were quite rightly absolutely massive, set in stone.......history will tell. PS. I lived through the sixties and am so glad I did, The "mersey" groups, plus fantastic acts like The Stones, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds... far too many to mention, but wonderful years and be in NO DOUBT.......The Beatles were the most influential!!!
19. Hi, I'm new to the forum as I've just just got my first Precision (American Standard five string), after wanting to move to a five string and after playing a Gibson SG bass as my "weapon of choice" for many years. Hope you don't mind me chiming in, but I've found a issue related to this thread and I hope you Precision exerts can help! The bass has the high mass bridge, with the through body or top loading stringing options, and here lies the problem. To set intonation correctly, the bridge saddles for the 4th & 5th strings are by default, very close to the anchor points. If I "top load" the 4th (.110) & 5th (.130) the large end mass of string winding lies on the bridge saddles, not good and also making intonation nigh on impossible. If I string "through body", then the string break angle is close to 90%, again not good! As I see it, the ONLY solution is to go with taper wound strings - through the body, so that just the core of the string would lie on the bridge saddle and would cope with the acute break angle. Any advice or recommendations based on your experiences of this problem would be greatly appreciated.
20. Cheers, it is a fabulous bass but unfortunately remains un-played since my move to a 5string Precision. BARGAIN......I'll throw in a brand new, unopened set of D'Addario nickel round wounds, how can you resist...you know you want it!!
21. Bump #3...it is open to offers!
22. Hi, I've reluctantly decided to sell my Gibson short scale SG bass, as it remains un-played recently in preference to my long scale Yamaha. This is a cherry red, SG standard bass, NOT the cheaper "faded" version 2007, in good condition and in original Gibson fitted case (also in good condition, all locks & catches in working order), this bass has been upgraded with Hipshot supertone bridge for much improved sustain and perfect intonation. This bridge is made as a direct replacement and therefore there have been no "modifications" made to the instrument and the original 3 point Gibson bridge is supplied, should the buyer wish to revert to the original "vintage" characteristics! Bargain @ £699 ono., if interested, please call Brian for more details on 07852 190 333
