Punters wanting to talk to you when you're playing.
itsmedunc replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
Had someone many years ago trying to talk to me onstage. Turns out he was a bass player in a so called "rival band". As I leaned over to hear him he went to hit me. Before I could react, my brother (who did a bit of security work for us at the time), took him out with a full blown shoulder charge. Really funny. It was like a comedy sketch watching it. The lad spent the rest of the gig on the dance floor wandering about aimlessly. I don't think he knew where he was! -
One of my favourites for many years is Warhead by the UK Subs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pO_EqziS1g I have always loved it's prominence in the track and it's quite easy to play!
Subs Warhead and Public Image by Public Image are two great basslines. Transmission and Shadowplay by the Joy Division are classic simple but brilliant basslines too!

I once had to play it at an outside party where loads of singers, guitarists and drummers turned up but no other bass players! In my defence, I didn't know the notes and the guitarist had to shout them out to me! Who'da thewt thad eh?

What does it really matter to anyone anyway? What if someone chose to remove a Fender decal on a 73 Jazz and replace it with an Argos decal? I'm sure folk have done worse. Does it really matter? That would be their business, their bass and nobody else's anyway. Perhaps, some folk feel they need to "look" like they have a "real" Fender due to feeling others belittle their "lesser" bass? Snobbery and naivity are two different things after all. As long as it's not to defraud, what's the problem?
Well that's good, at least noones getting ripped off today. The seller has sold a few guitars so can't claim ignorance.
A lot of sellers end their listing like that when someone has made a cash offer and so avoid the fees...

I used to use one on one song. It enabled me to tap on a particular song that sounded far better with an open C. It would have been impossible to play without a capo.

We seem to end up in a position where our gear is not safe frequently and so have to leave. It would be nice if all 'promoters' ensured a safe room rather than have the attitude that 'you've played so shift your gear'. It's not as if equipment is safe in a car or van outside venues either. We've missed loads of decent bands through this...

Bohemian Rhapsody and Bat out of Hell are no doubt the "Greats" to some folk but I detest them with a passion. Over long "mother my dog" dross!
Cold is that bit between a building and your car isn't it? F**k gigging in it.
Neo Shakespearean I take it?

Where do people get these prices from?
itsmedunc replied to Roger2611's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
http://www.ebay.co.u...b4AAOSwhvFZBKVU If the seller had bothered to look he would have seen that they don't sell for more than £200.00 so £650.00 is just silly! I like the line "I will accept £650.00" I bet he would! I am tempted to put my Thunder 3 fretless up for sale with a "will accept a 1957 Precision as a direct swap!"
Roger, you aren't thinking of selling or trading your beloved are you? Chancer or not, I don't know. Sometimes we sell at what we feel it's worth and not what others feel it's worth (nearly put otters there!). I believe my JV is worth a grand plus. Thats based on, what I could buy the equivalent for the money I could sell mine for. To be honest, even at that price I don't think I could get anywhere near the same quality Precision. That's my perception, right or wrong. Or, there's other folk who don't have a clue! -
My bass was in tune when I bought it . That does me.
Mine seems to keep itself in tune! Never goes out from gig to gig! Still check it before we go on and keep an eye during gigs though.

After a recent gig, being thrown onstage with no soundcheck (backline provided), I've been suffering from tinnitus and it's no joke, believe me. I'd already moved onto in ears as I didn't want to risk my hearing. Stupidly, I agreed to the gig, not knowing if I could set up my in ear system. Unfortunately, there was no facility and so I just "got on with it". Bad move. The following link just goes to show what tinnitus can do to folk like us - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/05/inspiral-carpets-drummer-killed-suffering-tinnitus/ What a shame...
Haha. The aforementioned play in the Botanical Gardens was a Shakespeare as it happens.
Bah humbug, I hate performing in the cold. When I used to act a bit I have been coerced into doing a couple of outdoor performances and they were always chilly affairs. And as a punter I really don't enjoy outdoor events unless the temperature is positively Mediterranean. I remember being duty bound to go and see some friends in a play at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. It was bloody freezing and I retreated to the tropical plants hothouse for the entire evening, only emerging to give them a round of applause at the end. Luckily, in my somewhat limited musical career, I've never been in a band that's been invited to do an outdoor gig. The whole idea would fill me with foreboding. As well as the inevitable cold, there's the risk of electrocution if it rains. And it probably will rain. I guess if the rest of the band wanted to do it, I'd feel duty bound to. But I'd probably moan a lot and they would all hate me All hypothetical of course, as I'm not even in a band at the moment :-(
This sounds Shakespearean speak to me! You are still an actor!
Are any other northerners reading this, thinking "fingerless gloves?! It's got to be -50 before I put a jumper on!!"
Shorts, T-shirt and an extra flat cap serves me well.
