Shame the original photo didn't work Andy, and that was such a fancy-looking camera too! By the way, I don't think you were wearing that jumper either.
A great song is a great song forever.
This is true. I also think that a mark of a great song is that it remains a great song, however it's played. Even in the hands of bunglers, which is useful for some of us!
sorry,a facebook 'like' should be because you've actually seen the band and like them, not some sort of reciprocal agreement to get loads of 'likes' completely devalues the system IMO of course
I know what you mean Paul, but I've liked loads of bands that for geographical reasons I'll probably never see. I just like their sound clips, videos, look etc. If someone looks at my page and thinks, 'nah, no thanks' that's cool.

A couple of years ago we had a topic that invited members to share their band's Facebook page, with a view to networking and getting more likes. No obligation, of course, to get involved or even 'like'. When we last did this I made lots of new friends and contacts both ways, and I've been to see some of the bands too. We've had lots of new members and a lot of us have moved on band-wise. So here we go. 1. Len_Derby. 5 Hills Out, original folk-punk. https://www.facebook.com/5hillsout/

I got given a copy of Blue & Lonesome for Christmas. I didn't have great expectations, but I'm really enjoying it. Charlie Watts' drumming is particularly impressive. He's on the money all the way through.
I met Len_Derby and his wife in a car park once.
Not just any old car park, but a motorway service station in true muso style. No animals were harmed.
At the gig on 10th Dec, it will be a bit special because I will have built every guitar and bass used in the band . The fully tally will be the lead guitarists tele and spare, the vocalist's dreadnought acoustic, Pete's EB3 bass and SG six string, my own own design six string. Must remember to get someone to take a photo
Special, it certainly was. Someone was on hand to take the photo and I was lucky enough to get a little play on the 'Jack Bruce' bass. Gorgeous. The beer was pretty good too,

Slightly reversed for me. I tend to meet up with people that I've 'met' first on Basschat, I hooked up with John (Radiophonic) today when I went to see his band play a lunchtime special event. The plan is that our respective bands link up on gigs. Tonight I'm off to see Andy's band (andyjr1515). This is going to be quite an event as he's made every guitar and bass that's going to be on show. Also lent a bass to RolandRock that he played on the television.

My current 'go to' gigging 5 string is a German made Warwick Corvette. I really enjoy playing it. It has a rich, deep tone that is consistent across all the strings. Relatively light and smallish bodied. Personally, I don't think it wise to skimp on the strings for a 5er. Too many cheap sets have a B that would be better served strung across two posts keeping cattle in the field. I go for Newtones. All of the Yamaha 5s I've tried have been great value for the money. I have been underwhelmed by the Fender 5s I've played, although I haven't tried one of the more expensive models. I've got a Mexican fender jazz 5 as a passive backup bass and it's pretty average and heavy.

Just about every dub and reggae band I've seen have had a bass player toting a Jazz bass. Which I find interesting given all those stories about them getting lost in the mix.

Another fan here. Trojan Record's Dub - 40 Deep and Heavy Hits compilation is one of favourites.

Andy, my Yamaha BEX hollow-body (the orange one I took to the bass bash) has a piezo under the bridge. Feel free to have a poke around on it if you'd like to look closely into the installation.

UK towns (not cities) with a lively gig culture / lots of bands?
Len_derby replied to kiat's topic in General Discussion
A fair few of us on here are active in the Notts/Derby area. In the corridor either side of the M1 from say, junction 24 to 30 there's loads of smallish ex-mining towns and the larger cities of Derby and Nottingham. Relatively cheap housing and good transport links to the rest of the world. There's more opportunities to play than I'll ever have the time for. -
Count me in.

Basschat Bass Bashes. I'd never touched a Warwick until the 2015 Midlands bash. Now I'm the owner of a pre-loved German 5 string Corvette which is my main gigging bass for the folk-punk original band.

I plan to be there.

Brilliant, as always Andy. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing this beauty in action. Any gigs coming up? Living just the other side of the hill from Andy I can reliably inform the rest of you that his creations look even better in real life.

How Do You Value Yourself As A Musician, What Are You Worth?
Len_derby replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Good question Blue, direct and to the point. Would you get enough of the bigger paying gigs to make up for dropping the 'meat and potatoes' bar jobs? Also, I'm guessing here, the bigger gigs would involve more travel and time away from home. There will be costs involved with that, financial and time related. All depends on your personal situation. -
Happily he did And more to the point, so did his wife who is paying for it ('special' birthday in Nov) .
Shame, because if he didn't want it....... Seriously though I'm looking forward to seeing it and hearing him play it. He's a great player and really makes that fretless you made him sing

Congratulations on your purchase. I love Squiers too. Perhaps we could turn your question around. How do some manufacturers get away with charging so much?
-
I'd love to try some Gibson basses and see how they feel and sound, But there are comparatively so few around.
-
I use an unplugged electric bass, and various bits of paper if I'm learning something new. I do live somewhere that's very quiet most of the time though.

5 String sets with tapered B for Spector Euro 5lx
Len_derby replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
https://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-8250-5m-nickel-plated-steel-taperwound-5-string-45-130tw/41253?gclid=CKSEy7i69s4CFRaNGwodaqYELA Do you think these will be OK? GAK describe them specifically as being 34" scale - will they be OK on the 35" Spector Euro?
My advice is contact Newtone and tell them what you want. I've gone over to using their strings on all my basses and they provide tapered B strings for my Warwick Corvette 5. The owner/manager Neil Silverman is a good guy and an active supporter of musicians. A British specialist manufacturing company. Well worth supporting I think. -
Len is spot on except as regards the settling. Thunderguts don't so much "settle" as keep stretching for ever. It's a feature, sir ...
I was trying to encourage him Jack by sugar coating the bad news 😂
