2.
At the risk of invoking the wrath of private sector workers who think I've got it made and don't deserve it, it's a quasi-public sector superannuation scheme (I work in a University) which had bleedin' well better pay up.
It's just that I don't think any of them will pay up. I'm not particularly cycnical, but the numbers and projections just don't stack up. For me personally, I find the best way to approach financial/careers decisions is 'well, it's never going to pay up anyway'. For the record, I've worked significant years in both private and public sectors and have bits of pensions in both, plus a personal private scheme. I have no axe to grind in the public sector vs private enterprise debate. I know from experience they are both full of clowns, shysters and bullshine merchants. ANYWAY, back to the topic.............
  3.
My wife is very supportive of my musical exploits, likes our band and says it can go as far as we want it to. But the thought of what that might mean, and compromising a pretty secure job and a generous pension scares the bejesus out of me.
I don't disagree with your dilema and the fact you are taking it seriously. But, personally, I wouldn't put aside my dreams and ambitions in the hope/expectation that a pension scheme will pay up sometime in the future.
  4.
IME you can only do 2 out of the following: 1. Be in a relationship 2. Have a full-time job 3. Be in a band that is more than a hobby
I agree with this, but I suggest the addition of number 4. Have children that you want to be actively involved with. This makes the permutation of which ones of the 4 you can achieve/ juggle a bit more complex. I all but gave up playing for about 8 years when our twins came along. However, being a dad did have very positive benefits on the music. It was their growing interest in music that really got me fired-up again. Plus, it's amazing what you can justify doing and spending your money on. I've bought 'them' drum kits, guitars, basses, keyboards etc. They're both gigging musicians now, which is great. If I hadn't been a dad I would probably never learned to play the drums.

    Hi All

Morning Alan, Thanks for the links. The youth group looks very active. Yes, we will be at The Joiners this Friday. It's going to be a bit hand-to-mouth as our usual PA man/technical backup/MC is away on holiday as are a few others. We wanted to keep the continuity of every second Friday of the month though. The whole evening (called That Pub Thing) is a low-key outreach event. We do two 30 minute sets, one at 8.30 one at 10.00. The pub are relaxed about children attending, particularly as we use the function room. We're operating as a duo at the moment and do a mixture of original songs and obscure covers. In style, country-blues-Americana is about the best pigeonhole. If you can't make this one there's always next time. Do you look like your avatar picture?
  6.
Man, that is so Malcolm MacLaren !
I've decided to take that as a compliment!

    Hi All

Hi Alan, Yes, I know Denby Bottles but not your church. I used to cycle or drive up to Ripley and back each day in a previous job, and the wife works in Heanor. Most of my church playing is at St. Nicholas in Allestree (near the university and Markeaton park). The most regular place my secular band plays is The Joiners in Quarndon. Do you go to any open-mics your way?

    Hi All

Hi Al, Welcome to a fellow Derberian. Where do you play?
  9.
I guess you were concentrating but you look like you'd be having more fun at a funeral.
Nah, this is my funeral face......
  10.
Me in the drummer from a recent gig, all photographers love greyscale for some reason...... .
I think the Mods pulled that one and put a boring picture up instead.......
  11. Some friends got married at the weekend and they asked for a band to play the music during the service. The keyboard player wore a similar jacket to mine. We were nicknamed 'The Biege Brothers'. Luckily there was plenty of Champagne to drown the shame.
  12. I've just seen this. Sorry I'm a bit late. I use a piece of carpet. It's an off-cut from the one we had put in the living room. The LM III sits nice and snug on top and the carpet, although not fixed at all, stays on the cab when the Roqsolid cover goes over the top. All for free and it seems to work. The cab is a Barefaced BigOne so there are some big rumbles to cope with. My carpet is a neutral beige (chosen to mask pet sick stains etc) but you could have curry house style patterns or whatever. Even choose a carpet to suit the gig!
  13.
There's are a few threads like this already so it might be worth looking at those as well. While laptops etc might be better specified it's the size and ease of use that makes a tablet a better bet IME, and battery in the iPad seems to last forever so that's one thing less to worry about on stage.
It feels like an attack of 'pooter GAS is coming on........
  14.
We've got a few of these for the band - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0055CL5XE/ref=asc_df_B0055CL5XE7735085?smid=A35ATNU92FJ7LH&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B0055CL5XE
Looks great, thanks for that. So you find the iPad or similar does the business?
  15. A great thread. I've been thinking about asking a similar question. However, is a 'tablet' screen big enough to use as an electronic version of sheet music/music stand? I play a lot from sheet music or chord charts and the ability to use .pdfs or similar on a screen would be great. There's the problem of how and where to mount it so it can be seen, but that's another thread really. So, would I be better off getting a power-book type device or would a tablet suffice?
  16.
Yesterday I was goofing around with my Squier VM P-bass, and when I had to move some stuff, I was turning my bass upside down. I could hear something loose tumble around inside the bass, anyone ever experienced that before? Any suggestions where to look, and maybe what it is?
Is everything working as it should? In other words, does it have any relation to a new, or old, fault?
  17.
Not got much experience with flats but have just strung my P bass up with a set of D'Addario Chromes. Very pleased, plenty of oomph and to my ears a decent level of brightness.
Ha ha! Now I've got that same set to try courtesy of Mr Gary Mac!

Now then, if you're feeling really adventurous....... A friend of mine has moved out to Norfolk and he's getting heavily into building a 'scene' in that area, particularly Lowestoft. (The most easternly town in the British Isles I think....). Anyway, if you message him on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/jonathanmarriottmusic He'll probably be able to make some suggestions.
  19. I've just bought a set of D'Addario XL chrome flat wound strings off Gary. He was selling them for charity. He didn't wait for my cheque to clear which is very trusting of him. One of the good guys.
  20.
Actually it was this morning, 5.15 am to be precise. So the morris team I play with (Rackaback) went and greeted the May Day dawn at the Black Mill on Beverley Westwood. Considering the hour I reckon 60 or so punters wasn't a bad turnout. First time they've had a double bass there so photos were taken (including the local paper). We actually managed to see the dawn before the clouds rolled in and we were finished before the rain came. A fun time was had by all. Steve
That sounds brilliant. Any chance of posting the pictures or putting up a link when they appear?
  21. Welcome! Have fun. We're all boys at heart.
  22.
Not wishing to waste 5 mins of my valuable time, does it contain slap bass
Yes it does!!!!
