1.
I knew it would happen one day. Played last night in Matlock, went down realy well, packed venue, loads of them up and dancing and a really good gig despite one of the punters falling over a monitor at the end of the gig and knocking our female vocalist flying. Then it happened. I saw a bloke watching me very closley all night, so at the end of the gig he strolls over. Punter "I notice you play a 6 string bass" Me "That's right" Punter "But the songs you play only warrant a 4 string" Me "Not really, I use the bottom B string quite a lot" Punter "But what about the 6th string" Me "I use that quite a bit as well on some chord stuff" Punter " I didn't see that" Me " You wern't paying attention then, are you a bass player by any chance" Punter "No, I just like bass, it must be really frustrating for you having to play what you play" Me " Not really, I just play what the song requires, I don't need to play flash (like I could anyway ) Somehow I expected this at the end of the night, you could just tell. There was more, mainly about how I didn't use my second bass all night that was on it's stand, I told him I did use it for 5 song's, he said he must have missed it when he went to the bar for a drink.
Haha - Where were you? I think we got the same bloke at our recent gig at The Temple Hotel (Matlock Bath). Of course, it could have been a relative. Given the location, that's almost a certainty.
 2. Ouch! He looks totally bemused, as he would! Similar to Pete Townsend and his guitars, will he have to do it every concert now, when the audience start chanting for it? It puts coping with a broken string into perspective.
 3. Have a bump Ian. These are great guitars. We've got one at home. Typical Yammy quality.
 4.
I know that some people on here slag off Bill Wyman as a bass player, but I saw him and the Rhythm kings at the Bury St Edmunds AbbeyFest last night and it was a cracking show, and that includes Mr Wyman himself. Not flash, possibly not even adventurous, but (IMHO) exactly what the music needed, which is what makes a good bassist (IMHO again).
Yep, with you on this one. Like all successful people, the Stones were ruthless when they needed to be. E.g.dumping Brian Jones. Had Wyman not been able to cut the mustard he would have been out. (after they'd nicked his amp) Can you imagine a drummer the calibre of Charlie Watts putting up with a duff bass player?
 5. I don't know about you guys n' gals , but bottles of Grolsch with the rubber washers on have become very difficult to find around my way. Anyway, ALDI supermarkets are selling one litre glass water bottles for £1.49. These have a lid mechanism very similar to the Grolsch, with a white rubber washer that's just the job for keeping a strap in place. That's nearly £3 for a pair of washers, but it's still cheaper than the Dunlop or Schaller route. Plus you'll have a couple of nice glass bottles that can be used for flower arranging. storing moonshine or making Molotov cocktails.
Hi folks I'm middle-aged. ................... I hope to be here for a long time.
Me too Mike. Welcome aboard!
 7. I bought one of those infamous BadAss II bridges off Bill. The deal was a good one, the bridge arrived promptly and very well wrapped up. Perfect communications throughout, and I would recommend Bill as a good man to do business with. The BadAss now lives on my MIJ Jazz.
 8.
I was at a gig on Friday night and also found it very hard to distinguish between the instruments that the bass players from the three different bands were using. I certainly wouldn't have known which was which in a 'blind' test. Bear in mind that this was at one of the best venues in the city, with a very good sound system. Bass 1: Alembic Orion 6 string Bass 2: some old 60s Hofner thing (not the typical McCartney violin bass) Bass 3: Warwick Stuart Zender signature (played by Mr Zender himself)
From the way I read your post I presume this was at the same venue. In which case the common fatctors were probably the soundman and the PA. I wonder if he just dialled-up the bass sound that he liked or thought sounded 'right', irrespective of the bass played. As said above, 'it makes you think'!
 9.
I got this in a free meal. But im not really a fan of mars bars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc8aCFWjdDk
Smokin'. Or some similar hepcat phrase. Thanks for that, a perfect partner to a bottle of red.
 11.
Fender deluxe active P. So, does anyone have any opinions or experiance of this bass either good or bad
I don't think anyone's come back to you on this one, so...... I've had one from new for 6 years. A great bass, very versatile. Wonderful balance and ergononmics, I can have it round my shoulders for hours without any discomfort. But, if it's a P-bass sound you're looking for you'll be paying a lot for options you'll not need. Also, to me, it only gives an approximation of a genuine P sound and I've played it through many amp/cabinet/PA combinations. In my personal opinion, to get a proper P bass sound you need a proper P bass neck (or one with similar dimensions).
 12.
thakfully im no longer a newbie ... just as well the stigma of it all was starting to get to me ...anyway as im old and forgetful and not very good with all this new interweb technology can anybody tell me how i get a nice little pic to come up in the margin in the left alongside my rambling posting thank you muchly
Hi Steve, You do it by going into your profile screen. Access this by clicking on your log-on name next to the 'Logged in as' statement or via your log-on name at the left of one of your postings . There you'll see a box at the top left titled 'Personal photo'. You can do it from there. I get my teenage kids to help me with all this shizzle. It gives them yet another reason to mock me. So, we'll be seeing a photo soon of you looking like George Clooney?
 13.
Well, we seem to have established that - in varying listening circumstances - some basses might sound different from (or similar to) other basses. And that such basses might sound subjectively 'better', 'worse' or 'as good as' depending on the listener's taste, etc. Life is a wonderful thing and there's a flavour for everyone.
I think I'd like to propose you as the Emeritus Basschat professor of philosophy. Slightly more on topic. We ought to bear in mind that at most gigs the majority of the audience won't be clear about which sounds are coming from which instrument..............and are not really bothered about it anyway.
 14.
Get your 10,000 hours done then let us know.
In case you don't know, this refers to a book called 'The Bounce'. In a nutshell, it questions the idea of 'talent' and suggests, through research, that about 10,000 hours of the right kind of practise is necessary to be a 'master' at anything. Interesting stuff. The forum had a good chew on it a while back. Here's the link http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=138177
 15. Take a look in Bill Bruford's 'Autobiography. He's very witty about what it's actually like to play in a band with Lord Berlin.
 16.
hello.!! check this bass playing out..he owns this groove....IMHO... a few fans of this music? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEDoWT6HVH4
Thanks for that. I'd never come across him before. Excellent stuff.
 17.
Lucky you hadn't written half of some huge great peom and some bloke knocked on the door making you forget the rest of it.
Are you in a band called Xanadu by any chance?
 18.
Just a quick rant... SO yeah i was uber happy today after writing my first ever bass line that i stood up and put my bass down so i could get a drink, nt realising it wasnt secure. You can guess what comes next, it fell over and has bent a tuning key... Bitter-sweet day indeed lol
I've knocked lumps out of all my basses and never come up with a half-decent bassline, so you're well ahead of me
 19. Greetings from sunny Derby. The East Mids rock!!!
 20. I agree with the others that a mixture would probably work best. Also, as mentioned, everyone has a preferred 'learning style'. For some it's reading first, for some trial and error etc. But, if I could only choose one I'd say the lessons from a teacher. I think the discipline it should encourage would play a big part. The financial investment made in paying for lessons should help too. Of course, there are different levels of ability amongst teachers!
 21. Welcome Steve, Enjoy the forum. Are you a Beatles fan? Or is there another reason for your user name?
 22. I was lucky enough to have seen John Martyn a couple of times when he was in his pomp in the seventies. He was the first person I saw use loop pedals. Solid Air was a massively influential album I've always thought that every subsequent British singer/songwriter sounded different after it. Anyway, the main point of this post was to remind people that Dave Pegg also plays bass on the album, as well as Danny Thompson. I think Peggy is a very underrated player.
 23. Every effects pedal made since the dawn of time. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in.
 24. Been over to buy a hard case from Stephen tonight. A lovely case, and a good transaction. Stephen's a good friendly guy, pleasure to do business with him.
 25. Bought a Speakon ended lead off Peter tonight. All smooth and good business. He even let me have a little play on his beautiful G&L. What a gent.
