As has been said its just practice to get timing nailed down ...I think slap is a lot harder than people think so they tend to give up but it is well worth persevering as it will help all aspects of your playing ..more or less everyone of the top players can slap even if they don't use it a lot of the time.. I would suggest going back to the originator of slap bass himself and learn Larry Graham ... You can hear his influence on Marcus in this filthy funk rock masterpiece from 1973 -

Mike Clarke and Paul Jackson jnr. were kind of telepathic

Great bit of playing ,and great track ..i love the p bass but i do miss Scotts jazz sound on this sort of thing having said that i completely get where Scott is coming from regarding the way a p makes you play.

Perhaps it's Roger Daltrey and he's blocked it for fear of receiving loads of hate mail for being such a Dikk ! -
Ivor no idea what the problem is I'm just getting blanks where the adds should be ...maybe it's the work of that shadowy Russian media mogul Ivor Bollokoff
-
Well the show Moscow on regardless !
-
Yesterday I was getting adds all over the place but it all seems to have calmed down now π.. Just out of interest how does one go about becoming a Russian bride as I've been thinking of a career change ?

It's a Slim Smith morning here π -
I have 2 active jazz bass's and use them both passive my fender has a j retro which is a great bit of kit but I just prefer the passive tone so it only gets used once in a blue moon when gigging and the onstage sound is shite It's the same with my sire v7 great preamp but I prefer the passive tone.. For me they are a handy tool for adjustments on the fly but they always cloud the signal to some degree.

Lovely stuff π

This was from a very lively one off memorial gig I did in the summer with the Lewis Allstars , Gary Lewis was a great reggae bass player who sadly died of cancer a couple years back ..
-
Love that π

I would recommend the original classic ska ... if you can get the feel for this kind of stuff then the other stuff will come easy
-
I sympathise with you on this as I have to do the same in the reggae band I play with on the odd tune I start ,and on a lot of the others I end up trying to pull back the runaway train !..I find it's nearly always due to the drummer overplaing and trying to fit in fills that dont need to be there ,what's even more frustrating is he's a great drummer generally and has worked professionally but can't play well with a click at all ..I have played with other pro drummers who are rubbish with a click as they lose there feel especially when playing funk ,reggae or jazz and to be fair if you tempo map a lot of classic tunes the tempo does fluctuate so it's clearly not unusual... I love the idea of the drummer playing with a click but I don't think it works for everything.

Ok so I picked up the bass from Gary a little while ago and I must say I was hugely impressed , firstly the pics dont do this bass justice its definitely a looker π The fixtures and fittings are high quality and very user friendly everything works well for me The pickups are lovely and compliment the woods used to achieve a lovely tone and unlike a lot of bass's each pickup has a distinct and very usable sound used individually as well as combined The bass balances perfectly on the strap and although the neck is a little thick for me it's highly playable and probably adds to the tone Overall I like it both aesthetically and functionally and would love to have had it longer to record/gig with it ...whoever gets it next your in for a treat π Thanks very much to Marco for the opportunity to play this delight of an instrument ππ Here's a quick phone vid where I use front pickup alone halfway on tone back pickup alone halfway on tone both pickups full tone
