1. i see theres quite a schism, same goes for sitting or standing options. when at home i stand as i have no stool to use but i Pizz and arco away. With the tutor once a weeki sit and arco only....for now as he does have an open mind on the teaching side of things. Once i have the fundamentals we will discuss it. even though classical isnt my thing it is serving a purpose im still enjoying it and much to the detriment of the flats around my arco work is getting cleaner and much LOUDER
2. im reading them and bouncing them around the wonders of the internet, so much information
3.
You'd think that, but I work in a building at Aberdeen Uni where students can't even figure out how fire doors work. Getting negative feedback and resistance from one half of a fire door? Try the other half? No, push harder!
I have run into a similar issue with "Engineers" on a major gas plant...Can't operate firedoors with simple instructions, is building massive complex to process volatile hydrocarbons, What me worry.
4. My mate is studying At Aberdeen Uni recieved and email with a flashing High importance thingy on it basically saying. consider not going through with any plans to travel to South Korea in the immediate future. My only thoughts were No sh*t. not without one of these and some 4 million sunblock
5. Thank you all for the continuing input. I am finding them informative keep em coming.
6.
CAPTION?
IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU.....PLONK!
7. aye ive been swapping when my hand gets tired or sore (correct hand technique required, Im working on it) I keep getting told to hold it less like a pick and more like a light fragile object haha breaking the habit is taking alot of effort. I have noticed that any bum notes sound really fricking obvious when playing arco, though my neighbours havent complained yet but it is allowing me to explore the fingerboard and train my ear a bitty better. umm i dont plan on gigging any time soon...ever, very shy. only picked the Double bass up because of a dare and i like the sound of it. Certainly aint getting fed up with it i think my Wife is jealous im playing with it more than her.
8. After getting started on the Double bass and only finding a Tutor who favors classical Arco in the area which i live Do you think my playing the same music pizz would affect my learning I am aware that the idea is to also train my right hand to do as its told with a bow. your thoughts. Cheers.
9. My teacher charges £30 per lesson He is quite busy teaching and running an uni orchestra I dont have many options in the way of tutors here in Aberdeen so £30 seem better than no structured learning.
10.
CAPTION?
My Dance partner has a loverly voice, but a little wooden on the dancefloor
11. thats probably true but they must realise that people will modify it to get the best sound out of it. and them factory spec strings are junk.
12. After having my Stagg for a few months i thought i might sell it due to getting a Big Bass. However since starting to learn arco ive found it quite handy to keep around for near silent practice during the evenings when the flats around us are occupied. Ive had only one person who plays Bass guit interested but his fathers face hit the floor when i suggested his son take a few private lessons for posture and technique then he asked about the cost of strings i could see he didnt want to buy it. Though his son was really enjoying the longer scale and sound he could get out of the Stagg I like my Stagg it has its quirks but so does a big bass and will only move it on when I get the royal decree from my wife.

14. yeah but i dont have the disadvantage or advantage of having played any other instrument. Clean slate all that pish, Hell i only just started to read sheet music.
15. Sweet for near silent arco practice so i can play the big one during the respectable hours and weekends and the stagg during the disrespectful hours
16. ive been looking at a new bag, never considered an end pin wheel. the trolly sounds interesting however been eyeballing this bag http://www.thomann.d...ass_bag_3_4.htm Though more than your budget. could always buy a G4M Bodybag.
17.

Peoples of Cork wish they had one. always get flooded by the Lee
18. I have noticed that people DO speak to you when you bus it... The classic "thats a big violin" or "i guess your not the drummer" and the most common "nice CELLO" ...try and fit this under your chin... no drums dont have strings and ITS NOT A FN CELLO I have little faith in some humans.
19.
I often use mine to soak up spilt cider and to break the fall of p1$$ed punters who trip over the monitors.
Hmm the cider i can use and encourage, the pi$$heads i cannot and do not.
20. Round christmas i posted this one Fatback followed up with No replies. I wonder if you've breached some kind of DB taboo, there. A sort of lese majeste. Well,. I'm going to say I think it's cute. I might even do it myself.
21. Rather surprised about the age of my Tutor he is only 25, but seems sound enough. he is mainly focusing on Arco but knows that i would like to work on Pizz as well. Not a huge fan of Orchestra stuff he compromised with Ceilidh music once i have the basics down anyway. I already owe him 2 pints stupid rest notes.
22. Hey mate, your not the only one starting out so much info to be had from this forum. Ask questions get good helpful answers. The community here has a good culture of helping and offering advice. I picked my Bass up from one of the members on the forum and there was no hassle. There is plenty of pre-loved bass coming up on the forums of late so keep an eye out for them. Welcome
23. All this bad weather is making me wonder if i can fit mine into a Suzuki Alto. all the protection of a plastic bag and the power of a moped
24. Well having the total sum musical talent of a rock means i can learn something from pretty much anyone not to mention open mindedness, and a desire to learn. Aberdeen isnt exactly thriving with Double bassists and made it hard to find a tutor to start with. All answers to this thread on good and bad aspects will be appreciated.
25. Is there any glaring issues i should lookout for when i am being tutored? I know this is a broad question.
