Looks like I'm the first then! Rich just took delivery of my Shuttle 6.0 today (he's putting it through its paces at rehearsal as I type!). A nice straightforward and easy deal conducted via PM with a nice bloke! Good communication, and sent the cheque out pretty quickly too. Enjoy your new pain-free gigging schedule mate!

Specifications, measurements, plots and all that
Etienne replied to dannybuoy's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for posting those up Alex- very informative indeed. I recently sold my Shuttle 6.0 (to Rich, who's hopefully just taken delivery today!) and upgraded to a G-K 1001RB-II, and it really does sound great with my Compact from initial impressions at rehearsal. I think I'm going to put my plans for a second Compact on the shelf, as I really don't think it'll be necessary! According to your newly-published specs, the Compact will easily take the full 460W@8ohms output of the G-K, laugh, and then kick sand in its face... This pairing is so potent, I doubt if I'll ever find that out on a real-world gig! What's your opinion on G-K amps BTW Alex- have you heard one with your cabs yet? EDIT: +1 on the weight savings- that's a hell of an improvement on an already impressively light range of cabs! -
Hi I have a fender squier Precision Bass - Serial Number JV11324 - sunburst. This was bought in the early 80's when our bass player left and I had to play bass instead for our pub band (instead of guitar). The Bass in in pretty good condition and has only been played at home on rarae occasions as I've reverted back to 6 string lead. I understand the JV versions are better quality than more recent versions but would anyone know what this would be worth if i deceided to sell?
Does your JV have a large 'Fender' or 'Squier' logo on the headstock by the way? The Fender-logo'd models belong to the initial production run, and command a premium. In reality, there's no other difference in spec between these and the more common Squier logo'd JV instruments though- just that some buyers would prefer not to be seen playing a 'budget' bass, and will pay more for the different sticker!

I picked up my well-gigged but original JV '57 P-Bass for £300 in Darlington a while back, and consider it a bargain, especially as it's become my main gigging bass- my US Jazz has been left at home sulking on several occasions recently! When I first brought it home, I A/B'd it against the '79 US P-Bass I also owned at the time (a really nice player itself), and instantly decided to sell the 'real thing'! The JV absolutely smoked it... I'd personally pay no more than £450/500 for a tip-top JV P-Bass, and £600 for an absolutely A1 JV Jazz myself...

I bought this a couple of months ago in a six-stringed rush of blood to the head (it happens sometimes... forgive me!) but to be honest it hasn't seen much use, despite the fact that it is an amazing instrument. Two very talented guitarist mates of mine have played this and absolutely loved it, but both are too skint to buy it unfortunately... so over to you guys! For those who aren't familiar with this model, here's a quick overview of mine... -Made In Japan (this is an early/mid-Nineties model I believe). -lightweight double-bound body with 3TS finish. -'52 Tele 'V' profile maple neck (slight 'birds-eye' visible in places), vintage-spec fingerboard radius and fretwire. -vintage 3-saddle 'ashtray' bridge, with brass saddles. -Tele P/U at bridge, Strat P/U at neck. -5-way selector switch: P1: Neck P/U solo- tone pot bypassed (for extra bite!) P2: Neck P/U solo- tone pot engaged (classic Strat sound). P3: Both P/U's together (sounds great). P4: Both P/U's- classic 'out-of-phase' tone. P5: Bridge P/U solo (Tele twang!). The build quality of this is great. The guitar is nice and light, yet still feels very solid. Acoustically, it sounds vibrant and surprisingly loud, which just gets better when you plug it in- it blew me away when my mate tried it through his modified Deluxe! These are pretty rare instruments on the 2nd-hand market, as the production run was reputedly quite short (no more than about 500 made). Mine is completely factory-standard (apart from strings), in VGC overall (just a couple of dings/depressions in the body's finish from the previous owner), and comes complete with a smart Fender padded gigbag. I'm looking for £600 or the nearest sensible offer for this- believe me, it's well worth it! Blows some US Telecasters that I've heard into the weeds... ***NOW SOLD, PENDING PAYMENT*** I'm based in Liverpool city centre. Collection is preferred, but I can deliver this within a reasonable distance if my fuel costs are covered! Shipping is also possible at additional cost... More pictures/info available on request- just PM me. Thanks for looking! Etienne

Whether the music's great or not, it's obvious that your bandmates don't give a f**k about moving things forward. Your skills are completely wasted on a bunch of idiots like these- there are shed-loads of committed musicians/bands that would kill to have somebody as hardworking as yourself in their lineup! I've been in this situation myself before, and it's incredibly frustrating to say the least... Part ways with them ASAP! Hope things work out, and good luck mate!
Thanks. What mods did you have done on yours? Pete
Nothing too radical- just some useful stuff for a workhorse bass! I've changed the original pickups for Nordstrand NJ4s, fitted a series/parallel toggle switch onto the control plate, and finally copper-shielded and star-grounded the electronics. I also stripped the original black nitro finish down to bare wood!

I just took delivery of Dave's Gallien-Krueger 1001RB-II from UPS this afternoon, and I'm very pleased with it so far! I found Dave to be a pleasant and honest chap to do business with- great communication from him throughout the deal. He was happy to supply extra photos/info when asked, and wrapped the goods very carefully for delivery too. He even suggested some settings to get me started with the amp- can't ask for more really! Thanks Dave, you're a star... Thoroughly recommended! P.S. Don't forget to leave me some feedback too mate!
Just personal experience with the pair of Ashdown Mini 4x8s I had 6 years ago. Fine indoors, especially in front of a wall. Useless outdoors in the middle of a stage. That's why I sold them.
I also used to run a pair of ABM Mini 48's a few years ago, and my findings were exactly the same! Couldn't handle lows at reasonable stage volume at all well IMO...

Any tips for gritty rock sound with short-scale bass?
Etienne replied to argle's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ashdown ABM heads are pretty easy to get hold of, and sound great with a Sansamp bass driver DI in front- with the Ashdown's own tube mixed in you can get some wicked grind, yet still have lots of fatness! I personally don't dig Ashdown's speakers though- I don't think they do the heads justice at all IMO, but you may think differently! Trace 4x10s sound great to me though- you can pick those up for very little at the moment! -
Anyone seen that guy in Amsterdam who does the football keep-ups on Leidseplein? He's great to watch and does some amazing tricks but he isn't the best player in the world. In the context of a team he's probably sh*t... I'd pick a player over a showman for my team/band any day.
He must have had the week off when I went out there a few months ago- saw a pretty good breakdance troupe though! Back on-topic, I personally prefer the work of Mr Michael Balzary to Wooten- he plays some great stuff on The Mars Volta's first album for those who aren't already aware! However, I believe that both these players deserve equal respect for their deep passion, both for bass and for music, and their proactive approach in inspiring young people to pick up the instrument for the first time (Wooten for his books and Boot Camps, Flea founding the Silverlake Conservatory, etc). That to me is worth more than setting up an imaginary pi$$ing contest based on technical ability!

Quick poll: Rounds or flats on a Fender Jazz?
Etienne replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
Well broken-in rounds for me Clarky! I love the bite of roundwounds on a Jazz bass, but generally don't like the 'zinginess' of new strings (unless I'm playing stuff by Tool ). My hands don't really sweat that much when I play, so it takes a fair while before the strings feel dead to me. I can usually get 6-9 month's use out of a set of before needing to change. I also find that I get more bottom out of a worn-in set of strings (a new set only feels 'right' to me after 3/4 long gigs). I nearly always use nickelwounds though- Most stainless steel strings don't feel nearly as good to me under the fingers!
