Apologies for the delay guys, it's all a bit manic with work. Don't care though cause Guns n Roses are rehearsing in the next room! Looking forward to tomorrow Anyway pics as promised, I'll get some better ones once I find the camera. Afraid it's only iphone for now. Evoman, now you mention it, the crack does make sense if someone's overtightened the neck bolts at some point.

Hi guys, I'm going to take a load of better photos of it tonight, unfortunately I'd deleted the others when I withdrew it last time. They were rubbish anyway. Warwickhunt- that's interesting, I wonder if it's in the same place. I must stress though it's all completely stable and hasn't changed one bit since I bought it, it's seen a lot of playing since then too.

Best straight DI sound I've had was with a Countryman Type 85, brilliant box with a 10M input http://www.countryman.com/store/product.as...52&catid=10

It's Petracchi? Possibly the most annoying exercise in the world, but a really good one. The point is to keep your 1st finger stopping that Eb the entire way through the exercise, don't lift it at all. Take time to tune the other notes to that rock solid Eb. I'd keep my thumb stopping a D to help out the 1st finger. Fingering would be 1 3 2 3 etc in thumb position. Then you could try Daf's fingering which would be T 2 1 2 etc making sure you keep stopping that note with your thumb. Starting in D would be easier for this one. You could check your D with the D harmonic to make sure your thumb isn't wandering. Hope this makes sense

It's only controversial in the way that every luthier has different beliefs and ways of doing things. He's just the only person whose published his. My view is good tone is pointless if you can't hear it! It's useful for gaining understanding of how different parameters affect the sound but I personally wouldn't use it as a manual to do work on my own basses. I'd leave that to a skilled professional. If I had a cheap bass that I didn't mind ballsing up though I might be tempted to have a go. The book also covers a lot of open heart surgery and complex repairs that you'd never dream of attempting yourself.

Great book but you're not getting mine Some very interesting stuff that gives you a better understanding of how the instrument works, and just how skilled your luthier is when he works on your bass. I got mine from www.lemurmusic.com in the states when they had a sale on and the pound was stronger. It'll probably still be cheaper than the UK now though.
When I took up DB again last year, my right hand used to cramp up terribly after even a few bars playing with a French bow, particularly as my right thumb seems 'double jointed'. I'd wondered about a German bow, but my teacher encouraged me to persist, as in his view much of the cramping actually comes down to how relaxed you are as a whole when playing - hand, wrist, arms, posture and everything. This has paid off, and I can play longer pieces fine now using the French bow, with few of the cramping problems. My teacher's views on the merits of French bows over German are as others have commented previously.
(French) Where you grip the bow can have great effect on this too, I play with my thumb in the cutout on the frog rather than on the stick beside the frog like most people. A lot of players also use a bit of rubber tubing over the stick to beef it out a bit, then it takes less pressure to grip. As said though, the most important thing is to stay relaxed. Most problems are tension related.

Hi Gwilym, They're pretty high tension, not quite as much as MTD steels but still feel like they have a lot of resistance. I think Mr Tobias likes his super low actions on his basses . They'll be hard work compared to sunbeam 40s. To be honest, I think if you like anything other than a super low action they'll choke a 35'' instrument a bit. My favs on the 535 at the mo are hi beams 45s with the 130 B, silky smooth feel and sound. -

I'm seriously thinking about changing over to a DPA 4099 for the majority of my gigs so was wondering if there would be any interest in my Schertler dyn-b. It's a fantastic pickup in excellent condition, I'd be after £300 for it. There's so much great stuff going on at the moment. Check out Gwilym Simcock and Kit Downes, both incredible pianists. Chris Montague's Troyka for some very heavy grooves. Saxophonist Trish Clowes has an album coming out later this year with full symphony orchestra on a few tracks, absolutely beautiful writing.

Major GAS for a Bacchus Jazz!!! Check these out..
chrkelly had one for sale a while back...
These are amazing basses, I stupidly put mine up for recently (got a honeymoon to pay for!) but then thought better of it. If you're in the market for a Fender style instrument, definitely give these a try. Mine's from the early 90s and it's the best passive jazz I've ever played, so resonant and even string to string. -
Bought this recently as a bit of an experiment, I've had great results with these on hire basses before but I'm not liking the arco sound at all on my bass. The pizz tone is amazing though. It's been on the bass for a day so is pretty much as new. £100 posted *EDIT - this has now sold*
